Doesn't have to be from the theater. I just rented Top Secret! and Requiem for a Dream.

Top Secret! is actually a surprisingly cool movie. I'm surprised I don't here it mentioned more often, it's up there with the Naked Guns.

Requiem for a Dream was a monster of a movie. I'm surprised that it was originally a book since the movie seemed so focused on visuals and sound (and is what made it so great). I literally had the chills the whole time watching this.

Rented out Ping Pong, crazy Jap flick. Was pretty decent actually.

Just saw Constantine yesterday, was good.

Going to see Howl's Moving Castle today.. I'd wear my Totoro suit but I don't think that's really legal in Singapore.

I just got back from a screening of 7 of the 10 Oscar nominated short films. Many were US premieres.

The best animation I felt was "Ryan". A brilliant and unique portrait of what a pioneer in Canadian animation has become after drug addiction.

The best live-action was "7:35 in the morning". A dark comic effort about a man who can't bring himself to talk to the woman he sees every morning at a cafe, so he communicates in an unexpected way...

The NFB will go with yet another Oscar. Big props Goreomedy, I did not even knew this movie existed, I will be sure to buy it whenever it comes out on DVD. :)

The book is written very annoyingly. The film and the novel are two very different beasts.

Minority Report was showing on the CBC last Saturday (Movie Night in Canada! HAR!) and I glued to the television. I had watched this one on the theatre when it came out a couple of years ago, and thought it was enjoyable. I think it's better the second time around. Not sure if I'll watch it again though.

Just trying to get caught up on my Netflix queue.

Today I watched The Girl Next Door and The Thing: Collector's Edition.

Tomorrow, I'll be watching About Schmidt.

saw hotel rwanda last weekend... one of the best movies i've ever seen. I think everyone should be forced to watch it, actually.

Finally got around to seeing Total Recall. It was alright. That's really all I have to say.

When is the film coming out on DVD, any news? My father worked in Rwanda and really wants to see the flick. He got out just before the genocide. :(

Well the last film I watched was 'The Talented Mr Ripley'. It's a tad dull in spots, and not the most rewarding of films, however the performances are all well drawn. And it does feel 'Hitchcockian', Damon is unsettlingly cold as Ripley, it has visual class and its TAUT!

Was Ripley gay or not? WTF did the ending meant? Please explain.

The atmosphere of the film seems to enjoy the buried secrets, character mystery and complications.
The homosexuality is implied throughout the film so I'll give a short answer of 'Yes'. However the line 'I'd prefer to be a fake somebody than a real nobody' and his desire to be told good things about himself approaches his own self worth and the need to love his own self. It gets a bit narcissistic, I'm not sure, but Dickie was clearly an aspiration and icon for him, and his company and eerie closeness made Ripley feel the character.
Well that's what I picked up from my noisy little television viewing last night.
Whenever I'm confused about a film I search for answers from a few credible observant reviews. Worked well after watching 2001.

For 2001 it's all clearly explained in the book. It makes the movie pale in comparison. ;)

But the end, with his gay lover, and he made him sad, and sat on a bed, and it ented. WTF does that means? :(

i've watched dodgeball, about 5 times in the last week, i was so surprised at how funny it is, i usually hate ben stiller but he just makes the movie great. other's i've seen lately was walking tall n barber shop 2, both were pretty meh.

She Hate Me - Started off great, thought it would have a lot to do with industrial espionage, or office espionage or something. Ended up retarded, especially the ending.

Gia - This movie scarred me. Seeing Angelina Jolie naked wasn't that great, either.

Watched "Un long dimanche de fiançailles" (aka A Very Long Engagement) yesterday. Enjoyed it quite a bit. Audrey Tautou's character was a little wooden in it, but the screenplay and story telling was top notch. The war scenes were kinda involuntarily funny for most parts (think "Delicatessen" here). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0344510/

Just saw Coach Carter last week. Was alot more than i was expecting a remarkable story actually. My only gripes is it went on a bit long the point is hammered home about 25 - 35 min before the movies over. But i guess they had that little issue of the basketball playoffs to wrap up. All in all its a good message that more kids need to understand about sports as a privilage, and the work it takes to be successful in any field.

I went to see The Assassinnation of Richard Nixon last night, which was excellent. It's a total downer, but Christ, Sean Penn is pretty much the best actor alive.

I've also been watching the Wallace & Gromit films for the the first time in quite a while. They're beyond brilliant and I'm now properly psyched for the full-length movie later this year. And, um, if any UK GA'ers can get ahold of the recent Cracking Contraptions DVD for me, I'd worship them like a god.

Dude, I swear I was just talking about this movie with a guy at work last friday.
Basicly the cow with the rubber boots on, and the 220 volt jackhammer with the 2 foot long rubber fist. LOL

I agree. If anyone else would have played his part, the movie would have fallen apart. Fantastic performance.

Yeah, I watched that too. It was my first time seeing it... Liked it a lot, not sure why it didn't catch my interest when it was new.

Also watched Amelie last night (on Movie Night in Canada again :p).

Just saw Dogville. It was interesting, but didn't break me emotionally like Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark.
nor was it trying to, imo

I haven't watched much of note lately.. planning on seeing Au Hasard Balthazar tonight and The Woodsman sometime this week.

Also watched Red Lights this week. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys modern French films, or just a damn good character study. Not out in R1 yet, but it's only about a month or so off.

Million Dollar Baby - Favorite movie of the year

Closer - Great movie, in my top 10 of the year

The Woodsmen - Great acting, probably in my top 10 of the year

The African Queen - Incredibly funny comedy, hadn't seen it before

The Asphalt Jungle - Reminded me of something like The Killing, very good

Kubrick's Lolita - Loved it, great direction as always, story is a little more emotionally involving than the typical Kubrick.

Kubrick's The Killing - Overrated, but good.

Baadasssssssss!!!!! - Very cool movie about the making of one of the first blaxploitation flicks.

Garden State - So-so movie, too much meanderings, some funny jokes, direction is interesting, acting is :(. Kinda disappointing.

The Aviator - Great direction, great acting. The movie is entertaning but sometimes repetitive. Probably deserves a top 10 spot, but I'm a Scorsese fanboy.

Kung Fu Hustle - worth watching for the fight scenes alone.

Sky Captain - Wtf? It's not good or bad. It's just... wtf?

Lilja 4 Ever
- if you like depressing films, check this one out.

The best scene was the underwater fight - so awesome. But there was so many really stand out scenes.
The backwards scene had me completely confused.
The whole battle one that ended with the guy jumping on the grenade was another clever moment.

Did you see the deleted scene with the scientist and the apple? :lol

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Mostly rentals/cable....

The Natural (late to the party?) - B

Birth - B+

Slacker - C

Dazed and Confused - A-

Oh and I just watched Napolean Dynamite again...A++, such a brilliant, original, hilarious comedy. I guess some 'get it' and some don't. ;)

I'd go to the movie theater to see some of the newer releases, but I absolutely hate going to the movies by myself, so I guess I'll wait until they're out for rent..

Sideways is probably the one movie I may just go out to see by myself. I really want to catch it before it's out of theaters.......then again it'll probably be on DVD soon, so what does it matter.

I'm sorta behind film-wise.

Hellboy director's cut - Awesome. Crazy Mignola fan though, so I'm a wee bit biased
Twilight Samurai - I watched it twice just to let the whole thing sink in. Definate purchase.
Zatoichi (the recent Beat Takeshi flick) - Liked it alot, even the dancing number.
Assault on Precint 13 (current remake) - Garbage. I want my five bucks back, please.
Suicide Club - Wow. I still don't get it, but it was entertaining.

Other media stuff-
Invader Zim (last of the 2 disc sets) - You will bow down to Zim, puny human earth worm.
The Young Ones (collected episodes) - I'd never seen them before, holy crap, funny stuff.

Hotel Rwanda.... is what I wanted to see. Then my sister came with my nephew and we all got stuck seeing Pooh's Heffalump Adventure.

Why it wasn't straight to DVD I will never know. Or maybe I just lost my childhood for a moment. Or maybe my mouth was watering for some African massacre, who knows. Bleh.

Next up; Ong Bak.
