What screen does the US PSP have?

I've heard some of you say it has the Sharp and others have claimed its the Samsung. So what's the definitive word on which screen is in the US PSP?

Who fucking cares? They're both done to the exact same specifications, so they'll both be the same.

Ummm not quite there guy, one is quite inferior to the other.

All of the screens are the fucking same. I have a launch Japanese unit and a launch US unit.

Same shit.

OMG MY PSP HAS ONE STUCK PIXEL IN THE FAR BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER THAT IS INVISIBLE WHEN ON ANY OTHER SCREEN THAN A FLAT COLOR THAT IS NOT BLACK!!!! I MUST RETURN IT ASAP AND SWAP NUMEROUS PSPS IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT SCREEN.

OHHH, you mean that one Samsung VS Sharp screen comparison that WAS NOT EVEN RELATED TO THE PSP? Yes, that particular Samsung screen did indeed fail to compare. Thank goodness that does not apply to the screen found in the PSP...

Wow, yeah, how dare consumers not make due with buying a product that has a high likelihood of being damaged before it's even out of the box. I'm not saying all PSPs are stuck or dead-pixel messes, but is there something wrong with expecting to get one that isn't already having problems?

Yeah, stupid evil Sony. I mean, who cares if this applies to ALL OTHER LCD products, right? It's all Sony's fault. Yeah, you buy a new HDTV or PC display with dead pixels and, no matter the make and model, it's still Sony's fault.

The entire complaint against Sony was spawned from a claim that they would not handle dead pixels under warranty. They have changed their statement, however...

Yes, I KNOW the whole "side effect of LCD technology" spiel. I understand that dead pixels happen. But it seems like, at least for the US launch, they really didn't set aside some of the displays that had issues, and instead just pushed out almost everything they could in the name of having enough units out for purchase. When it's considered _lucky_ to get a PSP at launch without some number of dead pixels, that just says something's off about QC. I'm not just listening to naysayers about the matter, I know a few die-hards who are enamored with the machine, but just upset when they're facing as much as six or so dead dots scattered about their screen.

No, they haven't changed it. They've reiterated that they don't consider a tolerance of broken pixels to constitute a defect, but they've qualified that by promising a willingness to work with customers on the issue.

You sonybots really need to stop giving them so much credit over the dead pixel issue. It has been shown that they told the screen manufacturer they'd accept a higher rate of defect (read: dead pixels) in exchange for a bigger bulk discount.

When you buy an Apple Cinema Display at 30" that's both tighter in res and contains much more pixels, what are the chances of opening one with a single dead pixel? It's obviously slim, as I've never heard of one person complaining of such a thing, and it's common knowledge that only the most anal-retentive techno freak would buy the thing at $3000.

The issue is quality control, and Sony hasn't demonstrated it with this launch. Anecdotal evidence has clearly shown that there are probably more dead pixels in these screens than average. The reason isn't that these LCDs are any different than others, the reason is that LCDs with defects aren't being screened after fabrication but rather installed anyway.

It is clear that PSPs have a higher-than-average rate of dead pixels AT RETAIL than almost any other "high end" LCD-based product ever released. End of story.

The issue of people being pissed because of Sony's floundering support is a completely different issue.

... not that I care. My brother and I haven't found a single problem with either of our PSP screens =)

Yes, they changed it. Originally they told some online retailer that they would NOT be honoring the warranty on systems with dead/stuck pixels. Now they say they will.

- I have three US PSPs in my possesion.
- I have one launch Japanese PSP in my possession.
- Two guys at work have their own PSPs.

All six devices have a screen that looks *absolutely* identical in every way shape or form. Color temperature, sharpness, color fidelity. Anything you can think of. Identical. Yes, I compared them side by side.

The whole screen switcheroo thing is idiocy at it's best.

If other manufacturers of other LCD screens have pixel criteria then that means that Sony isn't doing any different than other manufacturers, all of them install the LCD's and deal with the dead pixel issue afterwards.

I'd like to know that it's clear... can you give me references so that I can read up on how it's already been proven that PSPs have a higher LCD defect rate than any other product?
