I'm with you that Microsoft should do this because we'll be lucky to see FO5 before 2035, but this is Microsoft we're talking about.
If Obsidian becomes a money sink and isn't pulling in the numbers then they'll closed down.
Giving Bethesda more resources to push out FO5 in a quicker time frame is more believable than handing Obsidian carte blanche with the Fallout IP.

I agree no way they get closed down. They will want to try and get some form of Fallout game ready for next season of the show. If that means remaking 3 or NV that's what they'll do.

Well tons of people wanted them to go 3rd party and only do AAA stuff. Here it is. New IP are going to get even more rare, since most people can't hardly be bothered with it anyway.This is a really depressing thread

I feel like people mentioning Obsidian are forgetting that The Outer Worlds performed very well as a new AA IP, and the sequel has been underway for quite some time. So even if Avowed doesn't meet Microsoft's expectations (whatever those may be), they're still safe until they ship The Outer Worlds 2.

The people at Obsidian made the original 2 games. Yes I know what you are talking about, but they know fallout as much as if not more than Bethesda.

The original 2 Fallout games were made by Interplay. Bethesday later acquired Fallout.

Ninja Theory used to do a lot of outsource work for other studios before they were acquired. Microsoft might be able to turn them into a COD support studio, rather than just shut down.

I think closing Tango was a bad idea (the other ones make sense) but it seems MS is just going hardline on the money now. Guess that is what happens after a $70 billion dollar acquisition. Daddy MS took over and Phil is just along for the ride. A bad thing for creativity, art, and the health of gaming but hey, at least MS gets to make more money for their investors.

Yeah, I don't really see them getting closed at all. They can make AAA games. That's what they want. They're also close to Rare and could help finish whatever the fuck Everwild is. Who knows.

Ah.....if that is what you meant by "the people at Obsidian" then that makes sense. Obsidian itself wasn't founded until after Fallout 2 was made.

Gotta say it feels like people here are willing Ninja Theory to close or something. We'll see how Hellblade 2 does, but I'm pretty sure the budget for it wasn't ridiculous. If anything, I could see Xbox funding the studio more to go bigger with a different MS IP or something like that.
The Initiative was just a total waste of time and if their game is still in development hell after so many years they would be even justified.

Fargo was behind Fallout. The Obsidian guys were from Black Isle. I'm not sure how many at Black Isle were splintered from the Fallout team, though.

Remember…the Activision/Blizzard/King acquisition wasn't about talent it was about existing IP that makes money NOW.
They will repackage that up, farm it out to more platforms, and profit from the legacy they purchased.
They could give zero care about new ip…it isn't profitable and people don't care, and they don't have the talent to make meaningful inroads into an already shrinking AAA player base.

One would think Obsidian and Id would be in "sacred cow" territory and not be touched, but these days I'm not so sure. I would love to think that Microsoft would rather spin these developers off back on their own rather than just shut the doors, but I can just about guarantee Microsoft would keep all the IP. It would be like Bungie all over again.

Even if it's a commercial flop, the studio has a lot to offer as a support studio and also for tech purposes. I just don't see them folding so easily, especially when it's pretty obvious that the budget wasn't massive for Hellblade 2. The whole point of developing both games was to create AAA products at indie prices.

It is really hard to tell because the problem is that while I can explain Arkane and co. it is hard to explain Tango unless it really boils down to the same case as with Lionhead (when the leadership left).
For now it is hard to tell because we don't know the state of the studios and how close they are to the delivery. Without Tango closure, it would be much easier to predict.

- Also it is hard to tell the state of Turn 10, but T10 and Coalition should be safe due to them being a part of technical division or something.
- Rare should be fine as SoT is doing good, though probably with Everwild they should stop traveling around and should start making a game or something.
- Obsidian has Grounded, Avowed and the upcoming the Outer Worlds so they have games close in the pipeline.
- Double Fine maybe? They have released anything aside Psychonauts 2.
- Compulsion probably depends on performance (they can fire that community manager though)
- Inxile should be fine for now (leadership is there, plus the game in a good state)
- PG should be fine
- Undead Labs probably should also be fine as state of decay 2 is doing good and SoD3 should do more than fine when released. The biggest question mark is in the what state SOD3 is right now.
