my gf turned on the computer today and our monitor has black lines streaking across it at all times. they aren't solid black lines, but just very faint lines across the monitor in various spots. this is a pretty old monitor (about 6 years old), is it just crapping out on me or is it a software issue that i could possibly fix?

Could be bad graphics card, monitor going bad, or a cable.

First, unplug and clean out cable connections.

If problem persists, try another monitor. That'll narrow down the affected part.

Dark lines are usually a video card. See if you can find another monitor or video card to swap out and see which is causing the problem.

I know this probably isn't it, but some older monitors (specifically Trinitrons like mine) always have two dark lines across, at about the 1/3 and 2/3 marks. Has to do with some sort of wire or something running behind the screen. While it's hard to notice, it's probably not something you'd have missed for several years, so this isn't going to help.

This happened to me with my really old and crappy Riva TNT, so I'd say the problem is most likely your video card.
