What the hell is Working Designs doing now?

... It's out on PS2. In development for PSP.

Ok so it's PSP version. 'cause i own Ark Of Naphistism (just realised it's the VI). I really wish for other Ys to come here and on home consoles because i really enjoy AON.

Yeah I'd love to see ESPGaluda, that'd be my #1 pick for WD now... I know the next in line is the Goemon game... then after that, who knows? Maybe we'll find out more @ E3...

And how could anybody wish for WD to burn in hell? There's always gonna be good Japanese games that never get a US release, all I can say is thank god for a company who risks bringing them out here... Stuffed with useless chochkas or not.

except there are companies that give better more accurate translations with out putting HORRIBLE HORRIBLE voice acting in it, that can translate a game in LESS time than it took the developer to make the game, and not have an ego freak running their company

and seriously anyone who is a big shooter fan that doesn't have their PS2 modded and is buying the imports is just plain silly

I haven't run into a shooter yet where I had to know Japanese to be able to play it

There's no place around here to get your system modded, I'm not about ready to ship my PS2 out to god knows where to get it modded, and I don't really have the $250 to buy a premodded system. If say ESPGaluda came out here, it would probably be released for $20-30, which is much more suitable.

And Atlus/N1/etc can't handle EVERY game that comes their way. That's why you have companies like WD. Although I think most WD games have fairly decent acting (exception being Wein Cruz in Growlanser II). At least it's not using your generic VA's from Teen Titans and every other Cartoon Network anime.

I fully support what WD does, they've finally learned their lesson in rebalancing games, it seems. Still, for a while, they were the only company doing good translations.

You can get a Japanese system much cheaper (especially used).

Yeah, I was thinking about that. The only import I'm interested in is ESPGaluda. I played ESP Ra.De. on MAME and thought it was fantastic, by far my favorite shooter, and I downloaded some ESPGaluda superplays... so I am dying to try the game. I'll have to see.

If you decide to get a JP PS2, I'm sure you'll find plenty more titles to import ;) There's some really good stuff that's destined to stay in the land of the rising sun.

if you're interested in espgaluda, you also have to be interested in dodonpachi daioujou. you just have to be. you don't have to be interested in psikyo shooting collection vol. 3 FEATURING DRAGON BLAZE OMFG, but you certainly should be.

Well, I love the first DoDonPachi on MAME, how is Daioujou compare? Not very familiar with Dragon Blaze but I definitely will take your word, you really seem to know your shooters...

it's very like dodonpachi, but somewhat harder and with the potential for really massive chains. i think people overstate its survival difficulty, but the scoring is almost intimidatingly deep. the donpachi series -- really going back to toaplan's batsugun -- has been about pushing the limits of the genre, and daioujou is in that tradition. the ps2 port comes with a superplay dvd as well as in-game replays, which are really helpful. the prerendered graphics aren't as nice as donpachi or dodonpachi's pixel art.

dragon blaze is similar to psikyo's other shooters -- you may have played strikers 1945 or gunbird -- but with unbelievably lush fantasy-themed graphics and a clever weapons system. it rocks.

I'm basically in the same boat as you. I've been satisfying my shmup fix on the DC for the newer games and MAME for the recent "classics", but the DC has started to dry up at this point. If there was a local place to get my PS2 modded this would be easy, but as much as i want to play ESPgaluda/DDP3/Mushihimesama, I have trouble convincing myself to drop ~200 on a jp ps2. I should probably just bite the bullet and install a flip-top or something.

you dont have to ship your PS2 to god knows where

theres plenty of people out there that do it in the states for fair prices

hell going back 2 years maybe 3 now I had my ps2 modded for 80 bucks and that includes shipping there and back, the chip and the installation and it's been more than worth it

if your even remotely a shooter fan or into 2d fighters a modded or import PS2 is the way to go

Still, for a while, they were the only company doing good translations.

that would be wrong as they havent been doing GOOD translations. I'll give you that they were doing translations but not good ones

I'm just not a fan of WD, I don't like them messing with the script while they translate games, I don't like them feeling like they have to change the difficutly, I don't like the fact that it takes them longer to translate these games than it did for the original developers to make it, I don't like how they will delay a game for months on end just to find the right paper stock for special paper standees of the characters, I don't like how they dont understand the basic concept of sticking to a release date, simply put theres alot of things that I just don't like about them

I don't wish them to burn in hell but I do wish for them to never be the ones bringing over a game I'm actually interested in

two of my favorite RPGs this generation were Disgaea and Phantom Brave, if WD had been the ones bringing them over we still wouldn't have gotten the damn games

So...where's vic? I want to pitch him my idea for a "Cave Collection"

Maybe he made a bet in one of those sales threads and no one else noticed.... the PSP didn't sell a million at the US launch so maybe he lost and got banned? :lol

You know, i had a thought. They could making a killing off of shmup fans. They could print whatever the minumum numbe of copies they need to be profitable, and maybe 200 on top of that. After the first printing sells out, they go on ebay and sell the reserve copies for ridiculous amounts of money.

LOL, I think goodcow had a theory about that for Panzer Dragoon Saga... cuz he notices even though the game had such a small printrun, it's always on ebay :lol

Is Puyo Pop Fever for PSP coming to the US? That could be a quick and easy translation to the States. It would get at least one copy sold from me.

God it would be awesome if they could bring ESPGaluda out here, or something like that. I don't really understand how they lose money on shooters. Does it cost them that much money to get the publishing rights or something? Shooters don't exactly have epic storylines.

scenario:

1. working designs licenses a shooter.

2. vic decides it needs to be rebalanced and cleaned up from the japanese version, so he pays the original licensee to do all of that crap.

3. shooter comes out like a year after it came out in japan.

4. working desings loses money on shooter.

if we could skip steps 2 and 3, we might be able to head off step 4. honestly, i don't know how realistic it is, but i think part of WD's big problem is that they try too hard. =) going back to 16-bit era.. spending all that time to try and make vay better was a waste of time for what is a fundamentally mediocre game, for example.

It would be kinda nice if we could get Growlanser 1 out here somehow.

What would be even better would be Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2. Now that I would pay a premium for.
