Besides cars.com, yahoo classifieds, and craigslist. One with a lot of owners selling their cars rather than dealerships.

Yeah I don't want to buy on Ebay either because I can never find a car that's local but they do have lots of good deals on there.

Not sure if it's rare but VW Golf 1.8T with 4 doors year 2000 and above. I found one for 8500 with 46K miles but the interior was thrashed.

i think you have to get a gti to get the 1.8t post 2k2, let me check.

actually it's 2k2+. so yah, that would be kind of rare. do you not want a gti for some reason?

How to search ebay motors for local cars:

Make sure you've logged in or have at least entered your zip code
(try using the "advanced search" link from the main page to enter zip code).

Go to the Passenger Vehicles section (or whichever section you want).

Enter * into the search box. Click search button.

In the "Sort By" box, select "Distance: nearest first".

Hopefully someday soon they'll add the distance filter from the advanced search of the regular Ebay section.

if you want a 4dr with a 1.8t you can look at the jetta and passat too (wagon trims of both if you need a hatchback). i'm not sure how much luck you're going to have trying to find an 00 or 01 4dr golf 1.8t

Sucks.. closest place is Texas on Ebay. I found a few 1.8ts but they're pretty expensive and I don't want to deal with dealership fees. I can live without the 1.8ts and just get a 2.0 but I'm looking for a golf because I like how it looks. I don't like the jettas or passat that much, especially how the front of the car looks.

the 4dr golfs aren't very common with any engine. you may have to get one shipped or fly out and drive it back. unless you have money and/or time to burn and a dying need for one of these, i would look for something more common.

i was looking at 1999-2002 Jettas, but the reviews on MSN Autos are horrid. Simply bad production quality, resulting in numerous repairs to the guys at VW dealerships, who are supposedly jackoffs.

Are there any other good sites for looking at personal reviews of used cars? Already tried Epinions.

if you're looking for vw info you can try vwvortex, but beware, it's basically a cesspool.

needless to say there are a lot of things to watch out for when you're buying a vw.

Such as..?

i've seen 2002 Jettas go for as low as $6800 used, in excellent condition. Seeing the trend of seemingly excellent condition Jettas so low was a red flag, but i had been set on getting a Jetta for a good six years. While i'd love to get one, it simply isn't worth it if i'm going to be going to the dealer every four months.

parts are a bit more expensive, it may be harder to find someone you can trust to work on it outside the dealership. i don't know vw specifics too well though. i do know that late model reliability has not been great, but that's really all.

my guess is that if you can find a jetta that's been well taken care of you could do well. jettas in particular are kind of in demand though. depending on where you are, you could end up paying a little more than you'd like to.

my friend bought a 99 jetta recently with something like 60k, but he totalled it in the first 6 months, so i can't tell you how well it worked for him.

I used to be excited about VW's, but upon reading user reports at edmunds.com, it seems like their quality has gone way way downhill since they moved manufacturing to Mexico. I'd be leary of getting a used recent model without a warranty.

It seems Jettas are extremely popular these days with the 18-30ish crowd. But seriously, I hate people that drive them, because it seems like every Jetta driver I've run into is way too cocky on the road.

Yeah, well fuck you too!

Corolla for life. MY DAD'S COROLLA.

Well I've seen a few 4 doors but they're a bit pricey. And I've visited VW vortex for a little while now. This is the thread I posted asking for opinions of a particular golf I found, it was nice on the exterior but the interior was dirty and kinda butchered..

I like that forum because they have a lot of do-it-yourself tutorials that can save you hundreds on car repairs/tune-ups.

But yeah, if I settle for a more common car because I can't find mine then I'll never be happy with what I got. 4 door and manual all the way. Currently I have my eyes set on these.

One built in Brazil, the other in Germany.
