What's so great about: StarCraft?

Sien chill out I said thats what I think. It dosen't mean you're a sore lose. If you haven't played it online yet that just makes you an ordinary loser not a sore one. The game has a huge following, you knew full well when you created this thread that your going to get slammed.

When you invite something to happen then react like an idiot when it does that makes you look like... you guessed it a loser.

Actually, this thread had proceeded rather amicably for 40-odd posts until you arrived. It was not my intention to bash StarCraft. My intention was to 1) post my intial impressions and 2) try to understand why the game is so popular. Hence the question in the thread title was not rhetorical, and a number of posters have helpfully answered that question. Thanks to their input, I am now curious to try the game online after I've accumulated some more experience.

You seem to think that I'm offended by your name-calling. Actually, what offends me is your simplemindedness and questionable reasoning skills. I hope this helps. If your next point is that I'm a prick, then I happily concede that point in advance.

Starcraft is one of the best games ever made. Period. Every unit has such balance and a function that most people will never know. The possibilities are limitless. I have never played a multipayer game that was identical to a new one.

Nothing is as funny as a Protoss' cannon rush. Man, I had my timing to a perfection. The cries of noobs screaming 'WTF' 'you hacker' and 'i'm going to report u to blizzard and ull get banned har har'.

Aside from that, the single player campaign is awesome, it has a great story and even variety. The one where you're the Zerg and you have to survive an assault from the other two races for 20 minutes or whatever is insane.

Loved that cannon rush. I loved it when the rest of the other team doesn't even know why their teammate just quit (because he saw cannons forming right behind his mineral patch).

To this day, I think Starcarft is the greatest game I've ever played. I put in 100s of hours on Battle.net from 98-2000 playing that game.

If you want to see why something is popular I would recomend playing it in the way that it was intended. You thread is in no way an attempt to gather info. It is however a clear attempt to piss on the Starcraft Bible and stir the pot. I was just playing along.

my most favoritest game ever. if SC2 is ever a reality i wont leave my house and will have 2 ribs removed for self blowjobs.

I... I... I'm speechless.*

* And what you said has already been done, I'm afraid.. ~flexes~ Ohhh yeahhhh..

SC was really easy to get into - and of course, really hard to master. Plenty of competition around was also good. It was like a well played chess game at one point.

While the graphics and even play mechanic is outmatched these days - but imho, it still holds up for its own good. One of my favorite RTS, ever - and I am waiting for the SC2. :)

Starcraft's balance is impressive, but I just can't go back to the arcahic control scheme and lack of interface improvements the genre has recieved since then.

Get good at playing online on a map like Big Game Hunters. Do this even if you dislike the game at this point. Once you understand the depth of the 3 races and all of the strategic and counter-strategic options, then the brilliance of Starcraft will dawn on you.

It will take a while to get good at all 3 races. It's sort of like what you have to do in Street Fighter 2 learning all the characters well. Learn to play a character like Guile well, and when you fight against a person using Guile you know his strenghts and weakneses. In Starcraft you become a much better player when you learn to play all 3 races well. You can't be a great Zerg player unless you understand how to play Terran and Protoss with great skill and vice versa.

looks like the Starcraft "critics" in this thread are really just CNC fanboys mad their RTS isnt looked upon as one of the best, ever

Personally, the last C&C game I seriously played was Red Alert 1. I played Generals briefly. Other than that, only Rise of Nations kept me as occupied as Total Annihilation did.. So, well, I disagree with that generalization..

It's a shame that maps like Big Game Hunters essentially destroyed the battle.net experience. I only play it in LAN games at school now.
