What's the best way to figure out if you can actually sing?

I'm not deluded, but I think I have an unrefined voiced that's not too bad

But my own opinion doesn't count for shit here. How can I verify if my voice is terrible or not?

if you're serious then go to a vocal/singing coach

i tried my hand at singing and it was enough just to try record myself. i can't sing for shit. i'd rather hammer a screwdriver into my ears than listen to me sing. so yeah maybe just record yourself and see if you can listen to yourself lol

That sounds like me with my normal talking voice

I'm imagining it would be 10 times as bad with my singing voice

Nobody really can't sign out of the box, you got to train that shit.

Either you’re a great singer or you had a really shitty elementary school chorus group.

couldn’t help myself 😆

Sing along to the radio in your car. When you reach a really emotional crescendo in the song, keep singing but quickly mute the radio.

As others have said, record yourself. The tape does not lie, you can think you're good at any instrument (voice, guitar, drums etc...) but once you play it back, you'll hear how it comes out.

If you want to train your voice to get better, I recommend just doing simple scales to practice singing in tune and really hone in on pitches. Singing in key is the number one thing you need to focus on, once you can do that well, then you can start expanding your range/learning technique etc...

Eh, listening to yourself singing can be a strange experience. Even very good singers, even some professionals, can have a hard time being objective while listening to themselves and can be overly self critical. And the way your voice sounds inside your own head is very different from what other people are hearing in many respects. It's part of why it can be hard to listen to yourself even if you're good.

There's also a huge gap between "something that would seem perfectly inoffensive to a group of randos" and an "actual good singer". Being able to sing in tune without belting or using falsetto is a good start.

(That being said, I have to belt when I sing some of my Red Hot Chili Peppers favorites, and I have to use falsetto when doing Frusciante backing vocals.. it is what it is. I can sing in tune at least. I won't embarrass myself at karaoke but I doubt anyone would really actively enjoy listening to me lol.)

Put your vocals in front of people. Social media has useful things about it. TikTok vids of vocals, be ready for criticism and praise.

If you have to ask, you can't sing. Sorry.

The vast majority of people can't sing naturally. It's an extremely rare talent. Even lead vocalists in bands often can't really sing and sound like shit when they perform live.

Let us hear your voice so we can judge you harshly and kill your dreams.

fr tho Recording yourself and hearing what you sound like is a good start. I thought I could sing till I recorded myself and was like:

if you genuinely like what you hear, then have a friend or family member check it out, and have them promise to be honest with you. Good luck 👍

I mean... you could still post it here if you want 😂 no I’m jk

It’s amazing how different you sound to yourself versus a recording. It was shocking to me the first time a heard it. I had a bit of an identity crisis...

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
i've been wondering this myself for a while.

I can carry a tune well but mostly when I switch to falsetto. I just don't know how to use my "singing voice". It's hard.

Don't show other people irl yet. It's proly terrible. You can post online. If you're not naturally able to do it, you'll have to train yourself first and see how far you can get. There's probably a program out there that can score you on pitch accuracy etc. You can also check your current range with a tuning app.

If all the cats in the neighbourhood don’t run off or if the police do not turn off thinking someone is being murdered then you can probably hold a note or two.

Everybody can learn how to sing, every singing coach will tell you that. You might not have the range of Mariah Carey, and your voice can be suited for a different types of music, but it’s possible for everyone to sing well. People don’t understand singing by itself is a lot of volume control, breath exercise, pitch, etc. You don’t just open your mouth and let the words fly out, this is what all wannabe singers believe. It’s hard work and requires constant practice, much like anything.

Came to post something along these lanes.

Everybody can, you have to learn and practice. It amazes me how technical it is.
If you want an evaluation, check with a vocal coach.

We have a very skewed perception of our own voice due to a multitude of factors like resonances happening inside our skull, ear positioning etc etc , so no, don't try evaluating it while singing in a shower or to a car radio, you have to listen back to a recording.

Record yourself acapella (=voice only) using the best equipment possible. You can sing along to a song but have that song playing through closed headphones while you record to a mic placed in front of your face.
If that doesn't make you feel like dying of embarrassment - that's definitely a good start.

What's next depends on what you wanna do with it. Anyone can make records not being able to sing in tune with modern sound manipulation software, but that is often hard to translate on stage and there are limits to which you can polish a turd, especially in real-time

Well, tone deafness is a thing. So there are limits lol.

When I have some spare time I record myself playing all the instruments for RHCP songs (don't laugh, this is actually a thing that I do, because I have fun, and it actually sounds kind of not that bad... though that doesn't mean I've shared it beyond a handful of family members and people I've jammed with in the past) the vocals are likely the weakest sounding aspect, but overlaying the harmonies, plus adding a little chorus and reverb goes a long way. Reverb in particular, so many people would sound so much worse doing karaoke if there was no reverb at all.

OP, listen to the people recommending lessons and a coach. Everyone is capable of singing moderately well. There is only (probably) one John Fogerty, but at the end of the day there is likely only one you, as well. Your coach will educate you on yourself, and you will come away with a much better understanding of your singing potential.

Note that a lot of pop stars flat out stink at singing, so it's not as big a deal as you might think.
