I would say UO. The ability to become fully immersed in a profession other than killing monsters really sets the game apart. You really could live the life of anything you wanted, and it was fully supported by the game.
I will agree with Ultima Online.
That game was way ahead of its time.
Besides the pve content (which was pretty good considering it was the first successful MMORPG), there was a very fun, although hard, pvp system, and the player economy was massive.
Nothing beats acquiring gold to purchase a house to store all your shit. I wish WoW could somehow have that.

The first MMORPG I played was Asheron's Call, I did a trial of UO many months after quitting AC, but didn't really get into it - didn't have alot of time to devote to it however.
I did hear how awesome it was upon its initial release, but everyone always says the game is pretty crappy now - unless you log into one of those unofficial shards that is based on the older game model.

Ok, I just checked the recommended system requirements for the game and my computer is a bit over those requirements, so it should work. But still I don't want to pay for playing games online, so it's a no go.
EDIT: Ok, thanks for the tip. Ultima 7 (both parts) is one of my all time favorite PC games, so getting more of something like that would be great.

UO rocked until they boned pvp. The first few years of UO is definitely the best time I've ever had with pc gaming.
Would it be worth playing EQ1? They released a "titanium" version of the game that contains all the expansions on DVD. I played EQ1 before only to quit two weeks later. Would it be worth giving it another shot? =)
I also played EQ2 for about two months. I've been thinking about playing again, but I'm not really sure if I will bother.

One of my favorite MMORPGs ever, and the hybrid shard is a great mixture of the old game and the new. It's pretty popular too, and has great PVP including gladiatorial competitions.
I tried Everquest after UO and just couldn't get into it. Haven't played another MMORPG since then.
