I remember a little while ago when they bumped it up from 140 characters to 280 characters and there was blood in the streets.

Why isn't it 560 characters or 1,120 characters per Tweet? Is there a legitimate defensible position why Twitter wants short turds of information to be passed between users?

The 140 limit was originally the max size of SMS messages which they based it off.

I've always assumed its a combination of data restriction and ease of use. Nobody wants to read paragraphs of material. Quick one liners and short little quips are easier to quote and meme.
