What's the worst sports trade of all time?

The defense was the biggest reason they lost that game. The 49ers defense couldn't stop Baltimore's passing attack during the first half. Flacco was completing everything he threw.

By the time they got settled down (the second half), the score was 28-6. The fact that the final score was 34-31 was due to Kaepernick.

Had the defense shown up in the first half, and not let plays like this happen, they probably win the game.

Flacco made Chris Culliver (the moron who jumped over Jones on the TD above) his personal bitch that game. The 49ers couldn't generate a pass rush, and they couldn't cover any of Baltimore's WR's.

With how the 49ers played, especially on defense, in the first half, the game had no business being that close at the end.

All true, but calling Kaepernick and improvement over Smith would be false as well. Every couple of years the NFL falls in love with running QB's with limited pocket presence and who can't read a defense at all. Then they are shocked why this new super QB didn't take over the world like he was supposed to. Next up: the new Texans QB. I mean my god, he stares down defenders and sees the defense as well as Sanchez.

Smith defintely is the better QB. However, that doesn't change the fact that

A) Kaepernick didn't cost the 49ers the Super Bowl. The entire team deciding to take the first half off did.

B) Kaepernick's play got worse as the team did (and he wasn't all that bad last year, tbh). The dumpster fire that was the 2014 off season was one of the worst I've ever seen a team go through. Combine that with Baalke's downright terrible drafting and you've got the mess the 49ers are currently in.

Also, as much as I like Smith, I don't think the 49ers would have made it to the Super Bowl that year with him as the QB, especially with how bad the defense played down the stretch (due to injuries). Smith is a good QB, but he's also a QB who likes to play it safe. There were times late in the 2012 season where playing it safe would have cost the 49ers some games.

The biggest issue with mobile QB's is that they put way to much trust in their legs before their arm.

Here's a perfect example,

1024x1024.jpg

Early in Young's 49ers career, he would relay on his legs way to much. It wasn't until he put the time and effort into working on his passing abilities that he became a Hall of Fame QB. Young's even admitted that early in his career, he trusted his running ability more then his arm.

A mobile QB can be a good passer, but he'll need to put the effort into working on his passing abilities.

And Kaep was god awful in the Super Bowl. What makes you think they wouldn't have done the same with Smith?

Alex had a monster game the year before in the playoffs vs. The Saints, and the team missed the Super Bowl because of the return man fumbled twice. SF was playing great with Smith. I don't know how good that was for team morale yanking the starting QB after missing one game and the team playing well. Harbaugh just wanted to win it with the guy he drafted.

That's pretty silly. The man he drafted got them to the Super Bowl. To call that trade terrible when Smith's successor took the team farther than he ever did is entitled homerism.

The worst trade one of teams was a part of was the Miguel Cabrera trade (luckily Im a Tigers fan)

Andrew Miller (before he was good 5.89 ERA in 58 games)
Cam Maybin (.257 in 144 games in 3 years)
Mike Rabelo (.200 in 20 games)
Eulogio De La Cruz (pitched 9 innings)
Burke Badenhop (4.34 ERA in 151 games)
Dallas Trahern (never played in majors)

For

Miguel Cabrera (.319, 324HR, 1090RBI, 2 MVPs, Triple Crown)
Dontrelle Willis (6+ Era)
