Like Qvoth said, the inspiration for his character comes from the delinquent Japanese tough guy/teen with a soft heart trope, usually with a pompadour hairstyle from the American 50s. My favorite example of this is from GTO.

Most directly? He reminds me of Yusuke from Yu Yu Hakusho and Josuke from Jojo.

Yeah. More succinctly, he's basically a greaser. Yusuke is a good example for sure.

It's hard not to like Genos after seeing the amount of animation budget that goes into his fights. It just looks so cool.
