I was thinking, my next desktop SHOULD be a new dual-core system. whether it has a processor from Intel, AMD or an IBM PowerPC. from what little I know, dual-core systems are on their way, with Intel seeminly making the biggest push for the consumer market. AMD shortly behind, (unless im mistaken) and PowerMac dual core is somewhat unknown at this point (again, unless im mistaken) so can we expect a roll out of the first dual-core desktop systems end of this year, or not until 2006?

Well you are mistaken. At least for PC chips. AMD designed their whole opteron and AMD64 scheme around the idea of easily converted dual core chips. They foresaw the limiting nature of clockspeeds and knew they had to prepare to take a different path. That said dual-core chips are pretty useless unless software takes advantage of SMP. Which almost none does. And the only games that do are Quake 3 engines. Until software moves ahead faster single core chips are a better bet.
