When did you buy your first DVD player, and what was your first DVD?

My first dvd player was my computer, a pos e-machine. My first DVD was Braveheart.

First Compact Disc was Live - Throwing Copper

Summer '98 I believe. Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey were my first.

my mom's goverment labtop in 1999 and my first dvd was either ghost in the shell or macorss plus. i don't remeber.

First Player was a PS2 ( i borrowed a mates player anytime i needed it for about 2 years before that)

First DVD.... I think it was Se7en

Christmas of 1998 I got a Toshiba SD-2109 for $299. It came with a demo disc of horrible music videos, but the first actual DVD I got was Lethal Weapon 4. I recently hooked it up in my bedroom after not using it for a while (bought another player), and I can't believe how crappy the anamorphic downconversion is. Instead of using some kind of filter to resize the picture it just deletes every third (?) line. Star Wars looked like a shimmery mess.

1999 a Phillips dvd player super cheap back then @ $150 and I picked up Swingers, Trainspotting and Pulp Fiction ("OMG it's SOOOO clear !!!1111")

I bought my first DVD player right before the Brazil Criterion box came out. That was obviously my first DVD as well. 1999 or 2000 maybe?

My first DVD player was the DVD-ROM in the PC my parents bought me in the summer of 99 before I went off to college. My first standalone DVD player was won from the LexisNexis rep during a small raffle at law school in 03. My first DVD was The Matrix.

First DVD player was purchased the day after Christmas of '99...a $250 samsung, built-in DD decoder(not that it mattered, we already had a DD/DTS Sony receiver)...I bought American Pie and my parents bought Analyze This...it came with a mail in coupon for 5 free DVDs, Lost in Space, Lethal Weapon 4, Six Days Seven Nights, Stargate, and Stepmom(:lol).

My first DVD player was bought when the Matrix released on dvd, because that was "the movie DVD was created for." :lol

1997

I dont remember what the first movie I bought was. I think I rented a lot of shit, and the first movie I bought was I think Swingers. I think I am wrong, so dont quote me on that.

PC player as well, Pioneer, like 5 years ago but I didnt buy any dvd for ages. I used to rent my DVDs.
The 1st I bought was Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000 IIRC).

I got my first dvd player in 1999. Got a good deal on a Panasonic dvd player, got it for 200 at the time (which I thought was a steal). The only bad thing is that it took 2 months for it to get there. The first movie I got was 'The Matrix'. That really was the movie that made me want to get a dvd player. I also got the five free shitty dvds that omnigamer mentioned. They also gave me like 5 free dvd rentals at blockbuster if I remember correctly (at the time BB's dvd section was pretty anemic though).

first dvd player was for pc back in 98 along with rumble in bronx. first stand alone was summer 1999, a pioneer dv-525 wich I still use and is my main dvd player.

I can't remember what year it was, but it was not long after it was discovered that my player had dip switches inside to configure it. It was also considered the best player available too and a reference player. I had the Sony DVP-7000. I love the look of that player with the slide down front panel. I'd probably use it today if it had DTS out and progressive scan. Hard to believe there was a time when not all players had DTS. My first DVD was The Fugitive.

First DVD player was in the Sony VAIO I bought after high school.
First DVD, Dungeons and Dragons, with a gift-card for a shitty store.

the first dvd player i bought was my PS2 last year, june 2003...

THOUGH, i had an xbox, which i won at MS's Xbox Unleashed event in NYC, obviously i didnt *buy* it...

first DVD i bought was the star wars trilogy last week...
though i borrowed and rented quite a few before that...

and i got the "Shenmue The Movie" DVD and the "Ulitmate Halo Companion DVD", but both of those were technically free...

Mine was in 1998, my now wife paid $325 for it as a birthday gift for me.
First DVD to go with it was... The Crow. My all time favorite movie.

First CD? Live Throwing Copper. Also had Ice Cube The Predator & Queen Greatest Hits about that same time.

ummmm what place did you get at unleashed?

First DVD's I got at Christmas of 1999 from my brother. They were The Matrix, Iron Giant, and The Alien Legacy.

About 6 months later I bought a double disc Toshiba player. I still have it but I have since upgraded to a progressive scan model.

First DVD player was in 1999.

First DVD was the Matrix.

First DVD that wouldn't play on my DVD player was the Matrix.

Fall 1997.

Not much out then, but my first discs were the Batman movies and Fifth Element. Back then, Warner and Columbia were the biggest supporters of DVD. Universal was barely starting, Disney only released movies from Touchstone, Dimension, Miramax, etc, and Fox and Paramount were a ways off from supporting the format.

That Christmas the biggest "wow" disc for DVD was surprisingly Contact as it was one of the first major special edition releases on a dual layered DVD.

Man I remember that. Fox and Paramount were throwing their support to Div-X, which pissed me off to no end. Thanfully, that died pretty quick. I also remember that the first disc to really impress me was Austin Powers; I never had a laserdisc so the commentary and deleted scenes index was all new to me.

Man, the good old days, when we waited around for the next big release, be it Braveheart, Godfather, T2, BTTF... when thedigitalbits didn't suck, and wasn't trying to promote some friggin' book.

I dunno, with SW finally coming out, it almost seems like an end of an era. Sure there's other NEW stuff coming out that we can look forward to, and stuff like more season of Simpsons but that's about it for us that have been with the format since the beginning and looked forward to every anticipated release...

Uh, if you ran a non-commercial website that got a ton of traffic and respect, and you and your friend wrote a book which would help keep your popular site online, you would be promoting it also.

Yeah, but they used to be THE source for everything on DVD. Reviews were very timely, and I liked reading Hunt's editorials. It's gotten to where they don't even really review, but maybe mention something came out in a few sentences.

For what it's worth, I think the IGN-DVD channel is what thedigitalbits used to be, in terms of good, thorough reviews. No, I'm not sucking up, that's just what I think.

Feb. of 99, ordered up a Dell with a DVD drive. First movie.....Predator, what else? I remember I bought the movie before the computer even arrived.

Bought a stand alone Toshiba player in March of 2000....it kicked the bucket a few months ago. Got a PS2 in November of 2000, still watch a movie on it occasionally.

Panasonic A-310 back in summer of 1998. Got it for $700CAN
