When did you learn to type?

I learned back in the 80's on 8-bit computers when I was copying BASIC programs from magazines by hand. Mostly self taught, but somewhat informed by a semester of typing class in high school.

I grew up with a computer since I was 4 or 5. I learned to type completely incorrectly as far as what is considered proper but I can type fast enough and never have any problems with it.

I can't remember, but I would guess when I was 9 or 10. The first time I used a computer was an Apple IIe, but I don't think there was any learning how to type going on - that was strictly Oregon Trail and Number Munchers, so it was more so just a game controller as far as I was concerned at that age. At 9 or 10 though, we got our first home computer and I learned to type myself to use it. I don't think I took a "real" typing class until I was around 13, but computers really weren't in my local, small schools back then. I never really learned homerow, in fact I rejected it, but the teacher let me slide because my WPM was the best in class even without it. I used to do about 125 WPM, but these days I'm old and slower, probably only around 80-110 on average casual.

Also learned in the late 80s at home on my dos pc, and then a 90s typing class in school.

It's absolutely insane and professionally disqualifying to me when I see any adult look down at their hands at a computer... how can you reach adulthood and be so slow at the main interface for technology??

and if you haven't learned up, fire up an emulator or dosbox immediately and start playing these

I initially learned at my Grandma's house when I was around 4-6 years old on her old school typewriter. We started having access to computers in elementary school and educational games like Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego helped get us more familiar. I believe Middle School was when we had proper typing classes. Us nerdy kids got through our lessons as quick as possible so we could play Wolfenstein 3d.

I used to type in the 90-100 range but these days I'm somewhere in the 70-80 range. I just don't need to type as much as I used to nor is it necessary for my job. Age has slowed me down.

My mom taught me how to type on a mechanical typewriter back when I was in elementary school in the early 1980s. The mechanics were the same so moving to computers (Apple ][e's baby!) was pretty simple.

Makes me think about a skill I learned that I'll never likely use again: using white out tape on the typewriter to remove typos. 🤣

I never learned to properly type. I just used a PC long enough as a kid until I was there.
so I don't follow any technique, I just use random fingers on random keys... probably not even consistently the same finger on the same keys (I actually don't know tbh lol)

I am not the fastest but I am decent enough that I never felt the need to properly learn 10 finger typing

I worked my way through that book. However my parents didn't sit with me with big smiles on their faces. Instead they said I'd get square eyes sitting so close to the screen all the time.
