When is white history month?

Agreed. They kill natives and take their land as well.
Yeah I was going to make a list of their "contributions" didn't but want to risk getting banned

I believe that white people, as an ethnic group, deserve to be honored as much as any other. They've really been rocking it hard since The Rennaisance. Seriously.

But I have a stronger belief that historical portrayal should always be human-centric and not race-centric. So, fuck the "My Race is Awesome" Months.
White people history is hilarious though. They used to rank other white nationalities on whiteness and they did not include Italians into the list.

White people can't even figure their own shit out, what now?

That's because his assertion that white people is an ethnic group is blatantly false.

Their are German-American and French-American history months.

People who think terrible things should definitely be aware of the ramifications of such ignorant thoughts; I fail to see what BHM has to do with this however.

Do you honestly think racists who view Black people as sub-humans give a shit about BHM?

I said its great because it reminds people of that, I'm not suggesting that the purpose of BHM is to do so. Obviously racists are already far gone, but elementary school students (who actually study BHM) are not. I'm just someone who has studied black history and learned a thing or too about prejudice.

Ultimately, kids get their racist ideologies indoctrinated by their parents; it's pretty much a whole issue entirely separate from school.

Moot.

The slaves didn't all come from the same village either, but they eventually merged into a single group speaking the same language while in America.

One could make a similar argument about the (white) melting pot. It varies between the different European stocks, but if you take German for example. it used to be the second most spoken language in America, but it hasn't been the case in a century. They ceased being "different". they assimilated for the most part.

Sure, they may have assimilated now; but it'd be difficult to have a real "White-American History Month" because they damn sure weren't assimilated in the past.

The argument of assimilation is moot. The intent of BHM, I assume is to raise awareness of African-(North)American history. Unfortunately "lay" history (of Canada, USA) is basically "white people in charge, minorities have to live with it until the 1960s". There are amazing studies of different minorities in North America but when the hell do you have time to teach it in a high school setting?

Why not take the demand their is to have a Black History month and transfer it to integrating everyone properly into education?

because we are lucky to have black history month. in our current society asking for integration, to be seen as equals is often seen as an attack by others. theres going to have to be a major demand for this

Why are we lucky to have something that is currently stifling true integration? Schools are just fine relegating African-American history to a single month because of BHM; it's completely ridiculous.

The core issue isn't being addressed as hard as Black History Month is pushed, and it is an either or type of problem; alot of people will tell you that their schools would just wait until BHM to teach about African-American history and be done with it. That alone is a good reason BHM needs to be abolished and the core issue needs to be addressed directly with the same amount of effort BHM has.

I don't feel the month is pushed very hard in today's schools because things that were once only talked about in BHM are being brought up during their relevant time period( ex: slavery during 1800s, Civil Rights during post-WW2.) Black History is being integrated into the regular curriculum, just a slow pace.

you make it seem as though there are major efforts to teach this in schools. true integration? what sort of integration do you think we would have? if black history month, along with all the other societal months were to be nulled tomorrow, do you think public schools are going to pick up the slack? nope. just more cultures forgotten by american "history"

Right. And I feel like, Good Job Bob, without Black History Month, these things wouldn't have been integrated into American History courses in the first place. Black History Month is the push to get African American history into the broader curriculum. And we still have a ways to go with all other minorities and ethnicities, I think these awareness months have proven their effectiveness in getting people to at least talk about each minority's (and women's) role in American history.

Yes, because i am sure that schools, especially in the south, will give a balanced account of history without BHM. You have racists and homophobes in Texas deciding what gets taught in history, yet you walk in here and go 'well gosh darn those blacks and their privilege!'. :lol

Fair enough, but when do we decide to do away with BHM? How is that decided?

As someone who grew up in African-American majority schools I honestly have no experience with Black history being neglected, if anything White history was neglected here lol.

its the other way around everywhere else. its barely looked over most times outside of a few popular names. those with achievements in scientific fields are practically unheard of.

Not to be an asshole here but kinda have to call bull on this, how would something like that even be possible in America? Did you skip the American Revolution, Roman Empire, Industrial Revolution, Colonialism, World War I&II and did your school ignore considerable amounts of Physics, Math, Philosophy and Chemistry? Either you had one really shitty school or you're pulling some big bull :P

More of a joke, but you'd be surprised about how much I didn't learn about until I went to a more diverse high school.

It blew my mind when I found out George Washington Carver didn't invent Peanut Butter. I was lied to. The other 100+ inventions made from Peanuts don't exist either.

you were told he invented things with peanut butter?

Let's take this a step further. Why aren't there WHITE markets? Or WHITE berries? Or WHITEmailing? Or WHITElisting? Do they X-men fly around in a jet called the WHITE bird? I think not. Hell the blacks even get their own type of dynamite!

1) black market = negative association

2) blackberries = dark fruit, color description!

3) blackmail = negative association

4) blacklisting = negative association (also, whitelisting does exist, and it's good! white = automatic pass!)

5) blackbird = color description!

My uncle is convinced that the negative associations surrounding the color black is a giant conspiracy to dehumanize Black people.

Curse us white people! It's our fault that night (dark) has been something bad for people since forever.

Arizona got these peoples back.

What's up with Arizona?

After a Latino state legislator proposed a Latino American Day, lawmaker Cecil Ash stepped up before the legislature to suggest a holiday for white people. Seriously.

This is, after all, the land of S.B. 1070, the contentious and draconian immigration enforcement bill that has been mired in legal deadlock since it was signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer (R) in 2010. The legislation, considered the strictest of its kind when it was passed, is to be ruled upon by the Supreme Court later this year.

It's also home to Russell Pearce, the former Republican state senator credited with laying down the framework for the state's controversial immigration law.

And who can forget the ever-graceful Brewer, stateswoman and author, wagging her finger dismissively in the face of President Obama at an airport in Phoenix last month?

And the swashbuckling Sheriff Joe Arpaio lives there, too. He proclaimed himself "America's Toughest Sheriff," and now finds himself ensnared in a U.S. Justice Department investigation accusing his department of racially profiling Latinos, basing immigration enforcement on racially charged citizen complaints and punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking Spanish.

Enter Cecil Ash, a Republican from Mesa, who feels that what Arizona needs now is an official holiday for white folks.

The idea apparently came to Ash after state Rep. Richard Miranda proposed a Latino American Day. "I wanted to speak to you all about Latino Americans here in Arizona," Miranda said on the House floor Monday.

After some debate, Ash stepped forward with his grand idea.

"I'm supportive of this proposition and I think it's well deserved," he said. "I just want them to assure me that when we do become in the minority you'll have a day for us."

There was laughter on the House floor. On CBS 5 News, reporter Elizabeth Erwin introduced her story on the latest state controversy saying, "You can't make this stuff up." No you can't.

On the street, a random woman in a baseball cap said Ash's proposal made sense. Of course. "Like they have Cinco de Mayo for Mexicans," she told CBS 5 News, "we need something for whites." Only in Arizona.

Ash, for his part, wasn't backing down.

"I think it was appropriate," he told the station, referring to his proposed holiday. "It was appropriate for the mood that was in the House and I think that if and when the Caucasian population becomes a minority, they may want to celebrate the accomplishments and the contributions of the Caucasian population the same way."

Maybe Ash is onto something. Consider the talk of a Caucasian history month on the social networking site Tumblr. For real. No joke.

I LOVE THIS THREAD!

Are you saying black supremecy does not exist?

you know, it's an interesting question and I'll answer it as a side-question. I think there may be about 100 black supremacists on Earth. There are lots of pro-black people. There are lots of black activists. There are also lots of blacks who simply don't like whites (as a consequence of bad experiences that go back to the 50s and 60s). But a Supremacist is a very particular description: one who believes their race is inherently BETTER than all other races. Superior. I do not know and have never met a black person in real life who believes black people are supreme and superior to anyone else. The strongest position I've ever met or read was the opinion of Stokley Carmichael and Charles Hamilton (original Panthers)...but those were anti-oppression movements. Black empowerment movements with the idea of gaining socio-economic equality (and hence, "power") through proper self defense. Theirs was never about being better than whites; it was about being treated equally and being tired of waiting for whites to recognize it themselves. After all, you've only got one life to live, and who wants to spend it waiting for another mothafucka to get their mind right? And so you had the Panthers taking care of black folk and standing up with the threat of violence.

But no, to your question I've never met a black person that actually believed they were better than whites. But I do know some aren't big fans of white people:

1.) Nation of Islam - I mean, they believe the white man came from an evil experiment conducted by an evil alien doctor in space. I don't know if they teach being better than whites, but they originated the term "white devils"...though prior to the 60s, it's not surprising that ANY person of color would refer to whites in such a manner. But I believe this is still in their teaching today, to what extent and to what their true feelings are (Louis F. has said many a time that he loves his white brothers and sisters), I don't know. Whether they actually believe they're better, I don't know.

2.) 5%er Nation of Gods and Earths - Batshit crazy, and the religion that you've heard the Wu-Tang Clan espouse back in the day. Read about them for the lulz.

Both of those groups are small enough to be irrelevant. Neither holds any political power or recognition in the black community.

The Nation does not believe in a traditional God but instead believes that the Asiatic Blackman is God [sic] and his proper name is Allah, an acronym for Arm, Leg, Leg, Arm, Head

Why is this thread not locked? It seemed like a troll thread from the start.Just another excuse to perpetuate hidden racist thoughts.

Ultimately, kids get their racist ideologies indoctrinated by their parents; it's pretty much a whole issue entirely separate from school.

Not necessearily. I've got very liberal, good-hearted parents. My prejudices against immigrants is the result of experiences I've had. I bet that is the case for alot of people.

Yes, and to Morgan I say, "no thanks". Asking someone to stop recognizing me as a black man is asking them to ignore a big part of who I am. I expect people to see all of me, and to not forget who I am and what I came through. No, you need to see me.

It would be nice to not need to have a month as Morgan mentioned, as black history IS American history. The problem, of course, is that there isn't very much black American history in history books. Huge portions of the American story end up left untold, and if allowed to persist will simply disappear from all knowledge. I remember in High School, I wore a NY Black Yankees t-shirt to school, and a white girl in my Spanish class asked me, "why do they have to be the BLACK Yankees"? I told her, "they were a Negro Leagues team.." to which she replied, "Why does it have to be THE NEGRO LEAGUES?!??"

Now that's a damn shame. Not 60 years ago, the Negro Leagues was the only place black athletes could play baseball..and yet the knowledge of their existence, contributions to the "national pastime" and is already almost lost. And we've had these discussions about Cripus Attucks being written out of history books, etc. The examples can go on all day, but I'm not interested in a long diatribe about it. Sure it would be nice if there was enough black American history being taught in schools as to render a heritage/history month unnecessary. But it's laughable to think that is the reality of K-12 education, and old-ass, out of touch Morgan Freeman should probably inspect some history books and consider his thoughts again.
I agree. I think there's so much pressure to not speak of history that makes people uncomfortable that there needs to be an equally strong opposing force to make sure the dialogue stays open. This is in addition to the problems that marginalized groups have with getting their history recorded at all.

Ideally black history should get a permanent part in class discussions. But if dedicating a whole month to black history is the only way to guarantee that the information gets disseminated at all then it remains a necessary practice.

I would rather see a complete re-haul of the K-12 curriculum because large numbers of high school graduates are coming out of school being woefully ignorant and completely unprepared for college.
