Man, I had never even heard of that game. And it looks so cool!

Why is the ratings so low? Is it really a bad game?
I don't recommend it to people because its so divisive.

For me it was a 9/10, and one of my favorite action games ever. For most people, it's one of the worst games ever released apparently. It is definitely AA with some jank you need to acclimate to, but the combat accomplishes a lot of interesting stuff that I loved. Made by the combat director for Ninja Gaiden 2.

Again, this is not a recommendation. Buy it on your own if you want. I don't know if you'll hate it intensely or love it.

People's expectations and it's older style of game design.

The actual gameplay is very enjoyable as long as you set your expectations properly and appreciate older game design styles.

I think The Electric Underground summed it up best with:
Today I am covering a game that I think has taken everyone by surprise, Wanted: Dead by former members of Team Ninja now in a new studio called: SOLEIL. This action game is hard to define, but it is a mix of character action/beat em' up style close quarters combat with 3rd person cover shooter mechanics as well. It is a fascinating and fun game that focuses in on dense arcade inspired level-design with a charming combination of brutality and campiness. It's vibe and even some of its mechanics remind me more of Dead or Alive than Ninja Gaiden, which I discuss in the review.
When I first started playing, I think I was expecting it to be Ninja Gaiden with guns, and I think a lot of other reviewers were expecting the same thing. It is clear that the IGN reviewer, who definetly decided to make a statement by rating the game a 4/10, wanted to play Bayonetta or Devil May Cry (even complaining about not having air juggles in the game). How the main character, Stone, is going to fly around and pull off air juggles when the game is supposed to be more tactical and grounded is never addressed by the reviewer. The IGN reviewer makes few actual critiques and spends most of the review making vague complaints that either contradict themselves or contradict what he has said in other reviews (for example he hates how much parrying is in the game, and yet gives Sifu - a complete parry fest - a 9/10 and doesn't mention an issue with parry in that release at all).
What's fascinating with Wanted: Dead is that, like Gungrave G.O.R.E. I think it is a clear bellweather of a divide in taste among mainstream gamers. In the current "games as services" model, this title is enduring the wrath of places like IGN who want another cookie cutter toned down action RPG that they can say reminds them of Dark Souls. For players like myself, who apprecaite the richness of a focus on gameplay and unique combat ideas, then I think Wanted: Dead is going to be a breath of fresh air in a dull and generic release schedule that all blends together into an endless wash of service over gameplay.

Great post. Also the game was intensely difficult at launch, which I'm sure reviewers hated. It's since been patched a few times.

I feel pure action games like these have been few and far between. If you have to pick one game that you think is the closest representation of the John Wick experience, which one would you pick?

Off the top of my head, I can think of:
  • Midnight Fight Express
  • Superhot VR
Which one would you suggest?

im still waiting the Nintendo Switch version.

Awesome game

Fair warning, it's one of the jankiest games you'll ever play, and not in a good way IMO.

If you have a semi-decent PC I'd recommend getting it there since keys are literally being given away for it on 3rd party sites:

hotline miami, beyond competition, each level is adrenaline and a clearly staged murder spectacle that must be played out precisely according to the notes.

Unfortunately, the third part never happened...

Lots of jank at launch, price point, and difficulty. It's received some substantial patches since then.

Mark of The Electric Undergroud on YT loves the game. He's done a few video essays on it. In a nutshell, it seems to be much more old school and if you aren't used to that and don't take the time to learn how to cancel out certain actions, you'll probably dislike it.

I bought it a while back but still haven't played it.

Halo Combat Evolved with the 3 shot to kill magnum and the shotgun at close quarters. Obviously the game doesn't have all of the hand to hand combat, but double melees for a beatdown sure felt good.

What time is it?
Yeah it is. That’s your rose tinted memory fucking with you. The first two are still awesome though.

I replayed MP2 in the last six months and MP3 in the last year. Maybe you just like bald Max's overwrought self monologues every time he takes pain killers and terrible cut scenes that can't be skipped.

The monologues were great and I vastly prefer the gunplay, soundtrack especially and story to the first two. It’s Michael Mann: The Game which to me is pretty much perfection.

First two games still hold a special place in my cold heart, mostly 2 for introducing me to Poets of the Fall.

Max Payne 3 for me personally, I hate that the game is stuck on the PS360 era.
It's BC on Xbox One and Series X|S

Don't forget Tony Scott's stylistic influence on the game.
