Whiskey Media (Giant Bomb) Starting Paid Membership Service

I'm down for this, depending on the price. They should definitely be doing merch too, I don't know why they haven't already. Dave is a pretty good illustrator or they could easily get another pro to design some shirts and whatnot.

I think $5 monthly / $50 yearly is a pretty fair price. I honestly don't think it would be worth it for them to serve hours of ad-free HD video each week for a whole year at the $20 number a lot of people are suggesting.

GB is not self-published and the crew are actually paid employees correct? It just seems like people are misunderstanding the situation by using "support" to describe the paid membership.

The additional number of subscribers they could get at 20 vs 50 probably would more than make up for the price difference I would think, but I can't say for sure. I really think anything more than 29.99/year is very, very, very unlikely.

That's probably true. I'm curious how much an individual user is worth over the course of a year from advertisers(assuming GB had ads year-round).

No argument that their coverage of games, as well as pretty much everything else they do, is entertaining. That being said, I know I won't be up for paying. It does make me curious, though...I've still yet to see anything I could clearly constitute as an ad. So, I'm not sure I see the benefit of a paid subscription, outside of being privy to better-quality video and the few other items mentioned.

They use google ads.

Again, it sounds like people are speaking as if Giant Bomb are locking away currently free content when they've already stated they aren't.
If it stays that way, then great. It rarely does though. I'll use the stuff I currently use and once I lose that, I won't utilize them anymore. /shrug

Since a lot of people apparently aren't reading at the link:

The bullet points listed are not the only benefits. It says there will be more things announced soon and that these are just the things we would be able to guess at being included in the cost. Based on the phrasing it sounds like there might be entirely new content made just for those who are paying, or perhaps options like paid users can vote on what type of Quick Looks they might do next. Stuff like that.

They specifically say they want to have a paid userbase so that they can specialize for what their actual audience wants them to cover instead of trying to service a wider range of interests poorly. They don't want to serve the random person who stops by via Google; those people can use Joystiq or Kotaku.

That suggests maybe they'll be looking for more user input.

Since the entire concept behind the success of the Whiskey Media sites is its grass roots community approach, what on earth gives you the impression they would go out of their way to alienate any segment of their users?

There are tons of free game websites with great content. Won't be paying, but good luck to them. I like their site.

Sounds about as necessary and useful as PSN premium.

(Although I might be talked into paying just to keep Jeff Green on the bombcast ;P)

What other gaming websites have content that even approaches what Giant Bomb does? And by that I mean what they do NOW - that which will remain free.
