So who are your heros that inspire you?

1) Carl Sagan-Astronomer and public science advocate

Okay, I'm a geek. But who inspires's you?

Hunter S. Thompson.
I was once working for IBM and burst out laughing while reading Hunter Thompson. My manager rushed in asked what I was laughing about. I had to say that I made a really funny coding mistake.

No, I was just reading Hunter S. Thompson because coding in some Cobol variant was boring as fuck.

my grandfather, he came to america as a legalized citizen coming from mexico, separating him and his family of 8 for 3 years while he spent the time here in america making sure that he had a home (he saved up bought a piece of land and built a home for all of his family with his own hands), had steady work and savings, and made sure all of his kids, wife and great grandmother in law had all gone through the paperwork to become legalized citizens.

that man is one of my heroes.

I love that narrative. (Of course I am a son of immigrant parents, so I'm biased.)

Took on the banks, saved Capitalism, turned the US from the most affected nation from the Great Depression to on the road of being the most prosperous, also invented functioning socialist systems.

Yeah, Christopher Hitchens is on my list. Not just for being an atheist but for being a brave foreign correspondent dealing with a lot of flak (literally) and dealing a lot of hard truth.

Hitches was great on religion. Shitty with foreign policy.

my grandfather, my friends, entrepreneurs that i know personally

my older brother especially because ive never met anyone else with his hustle, ingenuity and work ethic. hes going change the world someday

celebrities, scientists, public figures etc. really dont do shit for me

The Woz (Sorry, Gary)

Fuck him.(Gary, that is. Sorry Gary . . . can I still get you to sign my copy of Eli?)

I probably live within 20 miles of Woz, I need to make an effort meet him. I bought an Apple 2 in the 80s. (OK, I begged my parents to buy me one after I broke my arm.) I need to pay homage to the great Woz. I've even written several patents for Apple. Hmmm. Do I need to sign up for a Segway polo league or something?

Jim Henson is probably my only celebrity idol.

Vincent Price was cool as shit, but I don't think I idolize him... I just want to be him.

Probably the anonymous person in a third-world country that wakes up every morning knowing that they have to find drinking water by the end of the day or their family will be a step closer to Death's shrill whistle.

I suppose that's what keeps me going with inspiration every day.

They aren't heroes of mine but just people I find really interesting:

Paul Erdős (avatar)

Richard Feynman (I know he's on the OP but I re-watch his clips on youtube every few months)

Salman Khan from Khan Academy is my hero.

I can't disagree there. He tried to defend the Iraq invasion on anti-theocracy grounds but Saddam was just theocratic to get popular approval. It was pretty clear that he was no real serious Muslim.

Not to mention the message it sent to the Middle East.

"Hey guys look! America is conquering Iraq because of their religion!"

His auto-bio, Surely You're Joking,Mr. Feynman!, made him sound like an arrogant dick. Just saying.

Hugh Thompson Jr.
Returning to the My Lai area at around 0900 after refueling, he noticed that the people he had marked were now dead. Out in a paddy field beside a dike 200 metres (660 ft) south of the village, he marked the location of a wounded young Vietnamese woman. Thompson and his crew watched from a low hover as Captain Ernest Medina (commanding officer of C Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment) came up to the woman, prodded her with his foot, and then shot and killed her.

Thompson then flew over an irrigation ditch filled with dozens of bodies. Shocked at the sight, he radioed his accompanying gunships, knowing his transmission would be monitored by many on the radio net: "It looks to me like there's an awful lot of unnecessary killing going on down there. Something ain't right about this. There's bodies everywhere. There's a ditch full of bodies that we saw. There's something wrong here."

hompson: What's going on here, Lieutenant?
Calley: This is my business.
Thompson: What is this? Who are these people?
Calley: Just following orders.
Thompson: Orders? Whose orders?
Calley: Just following...
Thompson: But, these are human beings, unarmed civilians, sir.
Calley: Look Thompson, this is my show. I'm in charge here. It ain't your concern.
Thompson: Yeah, great job.
Calley: You better get back in that chopper and mind your own business.
Thompson: You ain't heard the last of this!

Thompson took off again, and Andreotta reported that Mitchell was now executing the people in the ditch. Furious, Thompson flew over the northeast corner of the village and spotted a group of about ten civilians, including children, running toward a homemade bomb shelter. Pursuing them were soldiers from the 2nd Platoon, C Company. Realizing that the soldiers intended to murder the Vietnamese, Thompson landed his aircraft between them and the villagers. Thompson turned to Colburn and Andreotta and told them that if the Americans began shooting at the villagers or him, they should fire their M60 machine guns at the Americans:[8] "Y'all cover me! If these bastards open up on me or these people, you open up on them. Promise me!"

I only hope I could be half the man he was.

It was a joke post, but if I had to choose it would probably be these two.

I was fortunate enough to read his autobiography while visiting South Africa. Although I'm sure he is not as heroic as he potrayed himself in that book, he is still a hero for the modern world. The guy was in prison for decades but came out not bitter but appreciative of the new world. He is a hero for the entire planet.

Louis CK. I can't really express why without coming off as a little bit insulting, but he should be every sad person's hero.

Konstantin Pobedonostsev
Theodore Roosevelt
Heihachiro Togo
Thomas Edison
Albert Einstein
Sun Yat-sen
Yukichi Fukuzawa
Eugene Debs

I adore many personalities of the era right before the Great War.
