Wicked Game.

Chris Isaak:

HIM

I prefer the HIM cover.

Never realized there was a cover of Wicked Game before! Good version. Still prefer the Isaak original but good stuff!
Would it be NeoGAF suicide by stating that I LOVE Chris Isaak? I've seen him live 4 times and he is just superb.
Also, where are the William Shatner cover versions in here? No love for the grumpy old man???

I am enjoying this thread! Some quality posts here. :messenger_musical:

Fix You

Original - Coldplay

Cover - Monica Martin

"What?!! A FUNK cover of Fix you?!! LOL, this is gonna be utter tra-..." *watches video* "Well...that was actually a pleasant cover."
Interesting, and unexpected to say the least. Though, I feel like the emotional weight gets lost with the tempo around the "lights will guide you.... ....fix you." part, which is also probably why they cut the song early. But not bad.

Everybody wants to rule the world
Portia Doubleday owns it. It annoys me how happy and upbeat the original comes across given the lyrics used.
Hmm, my thoughts are quite the opposite on this one. I much prefer the conflicting beat and lyrics of the original. Feels balanced and something that I would listen to again. Something just feels sly about it, and i love it :).

dat Vox Continental organ <3

The Animals take the cake here! What a majestic voice!

In addition to them, I quite enjoy 2 Japanese covers of this song. The language and lyrics may differ, but both are great covers in my opinion.
Maki Asakawa - The house of the Rising Sun (similar in style to leadbelly)

Chiaki Naomi - The house of the Rising sun (similar? in style to The Animals)

Apologies for the atrocious quality on this one.

May I also present, Micheal Jackson vs. Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal.
Micheal Jackson (long ver.)

Alien Ant Farm

They both have their merits.
MJ's voice is top class!
AAF is mental! (<-- is it still okay to use this as an expression?)

And finally Cameo vs. Korn - Word Up

For years I thought this was a Korn original. Much prefer the actual original now. But they're both good.

Paul Pena's "Jet Airliner" vs Steve Miller Band's "Jet Airliner"

vs

I like Miller's vocals more, but I like Pena's playing more; so I'm not sure which one I like more.

Song: Mad World
Original Artist: Tears for Fears
Covering Artist: Gary Jules

I think Gary Jules vocal style and the somber tone fit the lyrrics much better than the
original version.

Song: Tainted Love
Original Artist: Gloria Jones
Covering Artist: Soft Cell

Can't say I am a big fan of the cover. I really like the original's Motown-influence.

Song: Immigrant Song
Original Artist: Led Zepplin
Covering Artist: Trent Reznor

Amazing cover, amazing way to open your movie. Can't say which version I
like more

Song: Drink to the Dead
Original Artist: Clutch
Covering Artist: Clutch

How to cover a clutch song? Don't, Clutch will do a better job of it anyway.

The Sound of Silence cover by Disturbed is 1000x better than the original.

I really, really, really hate Simon and Furuncle, but the original version is
style a thousand times better.

That just simply isn't true.
I love the cover. I saw Disturbed live, and saw them perform the song from 10 feet away.
But c'mon now.

One cover that is definitely better the original, though, is this one...
Cradle of Filth got all kinds of shit for covering this song. It damn near ruined their career. Mind you, there were already kinda "meh" to begin with, but they put out some bangers from time to time. They have released a few albums since this song released, but they've never been the same.
And yet, their version of the song is infinitely better than the original:

Heaven 17's "Temptation"

vs

Cradle of Filth's "Temptation"

Two more for you guys.

Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" is quite good.

But Crosby, Stills, and Nash's version is better.

And another one is that Buffalo Springfield's "Questions" is amazing.

And Crosby, Stills, and Nash's "Carry On / Questions" is also amazing, but somehow lacks some of the pizzazz of the original.

And, yes, I realize that both of those are cheating.

They're still technically covers, though, dammit!

This is a tough one (since the original is so good), but:

"Crossroad Blues"

The Robert Johnson original is absolutely legendary, one of the greatest Delta/acoustic blues songs of all time.

But the Cream version (the Live one on their album Wheels of Fire) takes it up about 20 levels. Arguably Clapton's finest moment on guitar -- but let's not forget that Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker are also spitting hot fire during the entire song.

I'll link YouTube videos of each later, too lazy to do it right now.

"All Along the Watchtower"

The Bob Dylan original is an A+ song (well... That could be said for A LOT of Bob Dylan songs).

The Jimi Hendrix cover is better. So much better that Dylan himself has gone on record saying that after he heard the Hendrix version, he played it more like Hendrix from then on.

if i had heard of the song, if i had heard of the film, if i had heard of either singer, i might have had something to put up here.

johnny cash > NIN for 'hurt'.

The animals > Bob dylan for 'house of the rising sun'

Bruce Springsteen > Tom Waits on Jersey Gi---, actually no, i prefer Waits' version of Jersey Girl.

The copy is never better than the original.
Original artist had to both compose and record a song, while artist who makes a remade version only has to record it. And, since it's usually a popular song, it feeds of the popularity that original artist gained.

Therefore, remade songs are nothing to brag about.
doesnt make sense

its either better or not
we are not discussing which artist is better but for that particular rendering of song

Gun n roses covered a few songs and did better than the original.

Live and let die - Paul McCartney
Knockin' on heavens door - Bob Dylan

Both done better by guns n roses.
Don’t forget Sympathy for the Devil, I think that’s better than the Stones version.

Right?

The Cash version is fantastic. And with the music video with his wife, and he is at a decaying museum of his legacy, and close to death.

And it is all decrepit and awful.. It is an amazing moment.

No hate for either version. But Crown of Shit is better then crown of thorns. And Cash elevated the song in a different way.

It was not a tiny 30 something bitching about life. It was a well torn bad ass, watching his kingdom crumbling.

But still the NIN version is better. Cash had an amazing career, but he did not write Hurt.
Even Trent Reznor said Cash owned that song.

I think Cash's Hurt is much more impactful. "Better" is a weird to describe music of this caliber, but the NIN version does nothing for me...The Cash one....man...it makes you feel it....for a host of reasons.

While there's many artists that have been well covered.
Perhaps none better than Bob Dylan.

That man is a poet and his songs ask for interpretation.
So i guess i'll list only covers from his repertoire from talented artists.
