Who is the Beatles/Led Zeppelin/Pink Floyd of today?

This generation's most experimental + influential bands (that I care about): Caedmon's Call and Jars of Clay. These guys change so drastically from album to album you honestly have no idea what to expect.. it's always something radically new.
And by the time Switchfoot calls it quits they will likely be regarded as one of the most consistent and influential bands of our time. Lead singer/songwriter John Foreman reportedly writes a new song DAILY. The three new songs I've heard from them (Without Borders/Politicians, Turn off the Lights/Take a Look at the Stars & Happy is a Yuppy Word) point to another huge evolution in their already unique sound.
All IMHO of course.. these ARE my 3 favorite bands of all time.

I'd argue that the Smashing Pumpkins were/are the new Beatles. I seriously don't know anyone that doesn't like them. I mean, my mom and dad even listen to the Pumpkins.
The mainstream music industry is too fractured and unimaginative right now to push a single band to the forefront of popular music of the quality of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, or the Beatles. Radiohead comes close, but not close enough, and have been on a downhill slide ever since Kid A. Late '80s-early '90s U2 comes close, but after Zooropa they're dead to me, and most others as well. If you'd posted this thread a few years ago I'm sure some people would have answered with Oasis, and look where they are now.
If by the Beatles comparison you mean "music for the masses that later gained the reputation of high art for some inexplicable reason that we'll never really understand" (and here I'm talking about Please Please Me, Beatles For Sale, etc.), then Madonna from around the period of "Vogue" is the correct answer. If you mean the Abbey Road-era Beatles as opposed to the mop-top Beatles, then... well, the powers that be have ensured that new albums of the caliber of Abbey Road will never get radio airplay, ever again.

I think Sloan is absolutely terrible, but I haven't heard much of their older stuff and I'm not really a fan of their musical style.

I hadn't read all of the thread when I posted that, but I'm not kidding. Maybe Nirvana was the Beatles, though...I dunno, look at how big of an influence the Beatles had, and move that up 30 years. You wouldn't be looking at a band everyone loves neccesarily, but a band who was hugely influential and whose popularity has grown with time. The answer is probably there is no equivalent to these bands, and any band we can think of is too unique to be compared to them.

Pain of Salvation is undoubtedly the modern Pink Floyd. Much moreso than any other band, Imo.
