Who is your favorite Spider-man Villain (and why)?

Venom was only good in the early 300s of the Amazing Spider-Man, but then got ruined by Carnage, I thought Carnage was over-done and the Symbiote crazy of Separation Anxiety got me tired of Symbiotes alltogether.

Clone Saga, now that is what killed comics for me, never looks back since

I liked the anti-hero, semi-redeemable aspects of Venom. He was interesting as well because his vendetta against Spider-Man was personal.

Carnage is just "KILL EVERYTHING", which isn't interesting in the slightest.

The problem with Venom, I always felt, was that he was supposed to be mildly sympathetic but his motivation for wanting to kill Spider-man was absolutely psychotic. Everything that happened to Brock was his own fault for being a shitty journalist.

Osborn in Ultimate Spider-man. Just the right amount of insanity, threat level and calculating psychopath. You can just feel the evil seeping from him (but not in a stupid way like Carnage).

Black Cat for me. Her relationship with Peter is one of the most compelling things in the series. Aside from that, she's sexy, confident, tactful and her character is the most well-written and layered of Spider-man's lovers. Felicia is a woman who not only gets what she wants (when and how she wants it), but faces daily moral struggles. Also, her costume design is damn near purrrrrfect.

Green Goblin was fine at first but should have stayed dead after Amazing 122. I liked the Hobgoblin because it was a nice use of the "goblin" style villain without bullshit like Harry losing his marbles again, or Harry's psychiatrist, or whatever other crappy impostor they had. Once they brought Norman back, I wasn't interested. Originally he was just a crazy businessman; now he's the fucking president?

Venom was fine at first, and again, overuse and spinoffs made him shit. No interest in him any longer, and Carnage was trash from the start. Of course, I was fed up with comics when he debuted, so that might have something to do with it.

Out of the top tier guys, Doc Ock and Kraven are probably my favorites; I have a soft spot for the various scrub-tier guys like Shocker, Beetle, Lightmaster, Tarantula, and so on.

lol what bro?

I'm a child of the 90s, so I do really love Venom. He's just a really well designed character and there's been some interesting takes on the character.

Modern Green Goblin is a really interesting character as well. The "Death in the Family" arch back in the 2000s was one of my favorite arches due to the dynamics between Peter and Norman. Likewise, Ultimate Goblin is a really well developed character.

What do you mean? Originally, he was a scientist/businessman type, a threat to Spidey and Spidey alone (more or less) then he comes back from the dead and he's now a guy on the level where he's literally become the US president?

this is the part where it breaks down.

Never mind, I went back and saw I was confusing some shit. I only read sporadically during that period. Obviously. My point is that he's suddenly a lot more important than he ever was.

It would make a lot more sense if you actually read the story you're attempting to reference.
Norman wasn't anywhere near the level of US President, and was eventually charged with treason, disgraced, and thrown into prison when he (inevitably) overreached.

current norman has literally nothing and isn't even the green goblin anymore. but he IS sane.

Norman Osborn, the whole Dark Reign era is the proof again.

But there are so many great ones, Venom and Hobgoblin get an extra shoutout

Nah. Normon Osborn has always been sort of the Lex Luthor of the Marvel Universe. He's a very rich and wealthy guy who is also pretty insane and handles power very poorly. That made him the perfect choice to use in the Dark Reign era. I think Dark Reign was stupid as hell in general, because it felt like a throwback to the early 90s super edgy era of comics where it was cool to have "everything go wrong". It's basically a big What If The Villains Controlled The Marvel Universe event period. Most of the big-big-big bads all have such huge egos and power bases that it would be difficult for them to agree to work together with another being the leader. Osborn being a powerful businessman and "normal" guy made the most sense narratively if they were going to do the event at all.

The line posted in scan on the previous page "smells like death, blondes, and victory" is one of my favorite lines by Norman.

I just like crazy Norman in general, though I'm interested in seeing what he does now that he's sane (once Dan Slott gets his mediocre ass off ASM anyways)

Eddie Brock Venom. He works as a good "Anti-Spider-Man" and he's an interesting villain because he kind of has a legitimate gripe with Parker. The sybmiote is pissed because Parker rejected him and Brock is pissed because Parker kind of screwed up his life.

good ol normy

what is this from?

Hobgoblin - he had a better origin - the mysterious character. Much like the Red Hood of DC comics or Erik the Red in X-men. Plus, his costume and glider are SOOO much cooler than the Green. I also liked Demogoblin, but he had a lame origin - just a cool costume.

Vulture - yeah, I know, but someone can make him really cool. First off, ditch the green and go black like a real vulture. Give him a septic attack - maybe he has blades on his wingtips that can cause a sepsis. Make him figure out how to become young again but the elixir is hard to make/expensive and doesn't last forever. So he goes from being an old man to a super threat in the suit, back to an old man again.

I'd say probably Kraven the Hunter because he looks at defeating Spider-Man as a prize, not some convoluted revenge plot. He was only for the self gratification and those make the best villians IMO.

Doc Ock is clearly the Superior super villain.

My man.

BUT

If I had to chose another, it would easily be Norman Osborn. Without a doubt, he's the guy I feel could always fuck with Peter in his head and come out winning in that sense. If I had to chose someone to be Peter's definitive arch-nemesis, it's the Green Goblin.

Tombstone is actually a personal favorite. Even BEFORE that dude got his upgrade he was a goddamn monster.

I'd love a crossover that drops that dude in Gotham, just to see the fur fly.

Yeah dude was smart and knew to stay in his lane, and he got on top because of it

Venom (Eddie Brock) has always been my favorite. He is the perfect counter to Spider-Man and to Peter Parker.

Kraven and the Green Goblin follow him up for me.

Marvel Comics and Sony Pictures

The horrors those two have done to this character are too numerous to mention, Marvel comics of the last few decades is something special though. I can't think of any villain of anything that has done the heinous shit to Peter/Spidey like Marvel did. Uncle Ben in a magic box, love of his life screwing his arch nemesis and having secret babies, magic Spider powers chosen one spiel, MJ marriage stuff... seriously twisted shit. I swear it is all some childish tactic to drag Spidey down so Sony will sell the rights.

Otherwise, Electro was one of my favourites and had a cool character, story and amazing powers which has been so shat on and misused that I guess I can't call him my favourite. Same as I can't call Spidey my favourite now. :(

Mysterio is a great character with the potential to be a brilliant villain, they have left him alone during this shit on spidey era as far as I can tell.
