A friend of mine in America needs a new TV -- doesn't need to be anything spectacular (she wouldn't know progressive scan from RF), but just something nice and decent, with at least S-Video since she likes to play GameCube and watch movies now and then. Who should I recommend as a decent TV maker? I'm out of the loop when it comes to this stuff... I haven't bought a "normal" TV in years.

Any recommendations??

I fucking SWEAR by my Samsung 27 inch dynaflat tube television. Non-HDTV but with compotent inputs s-video all that jazz. The colors are incredibly vibrant, ggxx reload on component = omg wtf.

Seriously, I got it for 250 a year ago in some open box deal. Best tv ive ever fucking owned. I think you can still get a model thats close to this one. I know The Shadow I think owns the same tv and he loves it.

you can get a nice 27" magnavox hdtv (4:3) for $499.

but if you want a regular tv, a good one would be panasonic and thats about $300 sony is probably $350. more times than not you're gonna get component, s-video is pretty much standard unless you're going cheap.

I got a JVC 27 inch iArt for my room last year for (I think) $400 Canadian. As component, SVHS connections, as well as a 16:9 widescreen aspect button. I'm pretty happy with it.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I have a 27" JVC (traditional CRT) and it provides a pretty nice picture... 3 different inputs (one S-Video). JVC products have always been pretty reliable for me.

Panasonic make crap tvs.
I'd go for a Trinitron.
Dont take my word for it though, go to the shops yourself and witness the stunningness that is a Sony Trinitron TV.
Build Quality is superb, Picture Quality is leagues ahead of any other brand.. in fact it's so far ahead that the other tv sets might aswell be Black and White.
