Why am I gaining fat all of a sudden?

Status
Not open for further replies.
I'm sick of my body. I just don't know what the fuck to do with it. I eat enough so that I never feel hungry, but don't over indulge, and this has worked well for me, for the most part. I'm actually very skinny, which I don't personally care for, but I prefer it over being obese, although despite being thin, it feels like the bulk of my weight is fat. Basically, my body doesn't really have much form. I could actually feel my backbone, but in other areas of my body, like my chest, my neck, my ass, etc, I'm "flabby". And now, I seem to be gaining even more fat. After noticing a bit of a fat gain, I started to eat less fattening foods, but now I'm still gaining fat, and at an increasingly fast rate.
I do work out. Not extensively, but I lift 20 lb barbells (lol), and do pushups and situps daily. For the most part, however, I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle. Gaining fat wouldn't really be surprising to me were it not for how just weeks ago it felt like I couldn't put on weight even if I wanted to, and I was eating more then than I am now.
Here's an example of a day of food consumption for me (what I ate today) just to give you a vague idea of how much calories I might be taking in:

Breakfast:
Small bowl of cheerios
8 oz Cup of skim milk
Banana

Lunch:
Buffalo Chicken Sandwich
Apple
1 carton of chocolate milk (from school)
1 carton of gatorade

Dinner:
3 slices of pepperoni pizza. On days other than fridays, I usually eat dinners that are much more healthy... but fridays are basically lazy ass take out food days for my family >_> ... not that I mind.

Other:
about 3 8 oz cups of apple juice (I'm just estimating for this... it might've been 2 or something)
Yoplait "99% fat free yogurt"
Another 8 oz cup of skim milk

Sorry that I can't be more exact, but I doubt anyone cares anyway, lol. Also, I've considered that I actually might not be eating enough. Altogether, it seems like I'm not really taking in that many calories, although I could be wrong. But still, I never feel like I need to eat more. I rarely feel hungry. Does anyone have any advice or any idea of why I suddenly feel like I'm gaining a lot of fat? Has this happened to any of you before? I'm 16 btw, if that matters.

This is the sole cause of your fatness. EDIT: I read that wrong. Run and workout more?

pizza

lack of real exercise

why don't you just got on a good clean bulk diet/workout plan to put on some healthy weight?

I'm tanking for Kabanov!
Cut the sugar, drink water instead of the chocalate milk and gatorade, and do more cardio.

Well, your situp/pushup routine doesn't do much as far as fat loss is concerned. That's more for converting to lean muscle. You should be focusing on cardio instead--get a bike or start running. It'll trim you down and work muscles that are probably flabby and unformed so far.

Also, eat less. I don't eat breakfast at all. Everyone says it's the most necessary meal of the day, but I feel like it's kind of superfluous. Whenever I do eat it, I feel groggy and sick the rest of the day.

Its all the sugar, it doesn't help that your biggest meal happens the be the one you take before your metabolism slows down.

Thanks for the suggestions. I honestly don't know much about nutrition, unfortunately, which is why I made this topic. >_>

I'm definitely going to stop drinking gatorade completely. I don't even like it.

Are you guys even reading his post or just parroting bullshit?

Very skinny 16 years old, small bowl of cereal with fruit and skim milk, school lunch with gatoraid and a small box of chocolate milk, sometimes has pizza?

You guys really think this diet will make teenagers obese?

Has that been your diet for the past month or just the past day/few days?

I've basically eaten the same lunch for an extremely long time. Obviously not everything is the same on a daily basis, but yes, I've been eating similar foods for months, which is why I find this sudden change so odd.

A small little carton of chocolate milk from school ain't going to make him fat.
LOL!

http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-calories/food/scotsburn/125-low-fat-chocolate-milk - 27 grams of sugar in one cup. It's very slightly less horrible than a can of soda. That's more sugar than I eat in an entire day.

Same ridiculous sugar content with the Gatorade and apple juice. Anything that isn't water or unsweetened tea is fucking loaded with sugar, and sugar is almost always the problem in these "why am I getting fat?" situations. People assume since it's milk or fruit juice that it's healthy. You see it all the time on GAF.

For the OP, if he just replaces all the drinks with water or anything sugar-less, I think he'll be fine. Food is rarely ever the problem in these situations unless you're eating a lot of it. It's always the extra sugar and calories from snacks and drinks. If you eat just enough to feel satisfied, but not full and bloated, you're fine.

I would say you're gaining weight because it's what people do when their body's metabolism slows down and/or hits a slow spell. Most people have pudge-days. As long as it doesn't become pudge-weeks or months, you'll be fine.

Dietary fat doesn't equal body fat.

It's probably all the sugar.

That reminds me of decades ago when I worked in a grocery store and those snackwell low fat cookies came out. I'd see all these dumb fat woman buying arm loads of it thinking it was some kind of diet food.

Yup, half the fat, 150% the sugar, and 80% the calories of normal cookies. I thought one of my female coworkers was going to cry when I read the label and told her how many calories they still had. I think she thought the more she ate of them, the more weight she would loose.

Few fat people are fat because they eat a lot of fat. It's almost always too much sugar which is to blame. Unless you are on some kind of fried food diet.

How sudden was this change? And how much did you gained during it?

It just started... I'd say a little over a week ago. There hasn't been much weight gain at all yet, but I could feel and see a difference in the amount of fat I have in some areas on my body, like my chest, my neck, and my stomach compared to about a week ago.

Well your current diet is not exactly the healthiest one, but if this been like that for a while and you have remained thin with no changes of it until now then maybe its something else.

Have you noticed something else besides your increased weight? Maybe you've been feeling more sleepy?

Cardio, cardio, cardio, that's the only way you'll drop the weight. Although strength training is also good.

Also whats your vegetable intake?

Almost every day I eat some amount of vegetables, whether they're broccoli, salad, carrots, or something else.

I'm not pregnant dammit. >_>

Stop working out w/ 20lb barbells.

Yeah, I should really get heavier weights.

Weightlifting is actually a more effective way to burn fat then cardio with a decent diet.

Substitute water for the gatorade, chocolate milk, and apple juice.

also I found this sentence confusing:

Dinner:
3 slices of pepperoni pizza On days other than fridays, I usually eat dinners that are much more healthy... but fridays are basically lazy ass take out food days for my family >_> ... not that I mind.
I guess you forgot the period because that sentence means different things. Pizza once a week should be ok although that's pretty frequent for a lot of fat.

You could try taking fish oil pills, follow the bottle instructions.

Also do you have a regular sleep pattern?

Thats good, I don't think you should worry at all. Just a few changes in your regular diet.

If cardio scares you, do some intense weightlifting. All you need to do is bench, shoulder press, squats, and deadlifts to start off. Trust me, you can eat a lot and still lose weight (don't be a pig though).

As many others have said, the only way you're going to get rid of that fat is through cardio workouts. The easiest way to do this would be hitting the GYM 3-5 days a week.

All this talk about lifting weights getting rid of fat is bull. The only thing lifting weights will do for you is give you buffer arms, and it doesn't sound like you have a problem with being skinny.

As everyone else said, cut the sugar drinks. They aren't helping.

stop spreading misinformation.

You can get fat eating vegetables all day long.

You're body will convert any excess calories into fat if you don't use them during the day.

A calorie deficit will cause weight gain because you're body will go into "starvation" mode and intentionally store as much fat as possible.

To gain muscle you need to work the muscle hard enough to where you actually damage the muscle. There are generally three ways of doing this:

Maximum effort: heavy weights, heavy enough that you can really only do a few reps with. If you can do 10s or dozens of reps, the weight is way too light.

Repetitive effort: sub-maximal weights, but repeat until failure. This takes an assload of time and it can be hard on your joints to do lots of repetitive motions.

Dynamic effort: sub-maximal weight lifted as fast as possible. Can also be rough on the joins/ligaments as well if you don't use proper form. With proper form there is nothing wrong with this form of lifting though.

Casually lifing a submaximal weight every now and then isn't going to do anything.

Situps are about worthless for losing fat as well. They target a muscle group that has limited growth potential with a very sub maximal load.

You answered your own question. You're gaining fat because you lack muscle.

About 65% of the human metabolism is used on resting muscles. Yes, you heard me right. If you bulk up on muscle, and sit on your ass all day doing nothing, you'll burn hundreds of more calories per day. Eventually you'll lose it if you don't use it, but on a day comparison this holds true.

The idea that people just suddenly drop in metabolism as they age into "genetic" fatness is for the most part total bullshit. There are individuals with conditions out there, such as hypothyroid, but it's like 3%. Sure, the metabolism drops fairly quickly when you're 60 years old, but you don't suddenly lose your metabolism in your 20s, 30s, 40s, and even 50s. What really happens is that after years and even decades of sitting on their asses not using their muscles, people tend to lose it. Those starvation low-fat diets that people cyclically go through speed up the muscle loss.

Start working out. In the long run your resting metabolism will nearly double, and your hormones tilting towards anabolic will improve your energy levels, mood, and concentration. It's just hard at first because recovery, especially the first few times, does the opposite.

Lift weights, eat more high quality protein (meat, fish, dairy, eggs), nuts, fruits vegetables.

Oh, and sleep. Don't work on fridays until 3 am like me. It can get hormones all out of whack, like skyrocket leptin, which drives hunger. You'll also need enough sleep to not only repair muscle tissue from workouts but also build on top of it. A lot of people overlook sleep.

Wow man...stop that diet.

let me explain some things to you...

Breakfast:
Small bowl of cheerios - Loaded with simple sugers and simple carbs
8 oz Cup of skim milk - thats ok
Banana - good also

Lunch:
Buffalo Chicken Sandwich If your having bread make sure its Brown bread, as its low in GI and burn slowly througout the day instead of storing as fat.
Apple
1 carton of chocolate milk (from school)- O_O loaded with suger and fat
1 carton of gatorade - loaded with tons of suger

Dinner:
3 slices of pepperoni pizza. On days other than fridays, I usually eat dinners that are much more healthy... but fridays are basically lazy ass take out food days for my family >_> ... not that I mind. - you should not eat carbs after 1pm. around that time your blood suger levels and motobolism slows down to a crawl. so any carbs you put into your body will store as fat...right away.

Other:
about 3 8 oz cups of apple juice (I'm just estimating for this... it might've been 2 or something) - cut the juice out altogether...or limit yourself to 1 cup a day.
Yoplait "99% fat free yogurt"
Another 8 oz cup of skim milk

My man your diet sucks...plain and simple.

that will need to change if you want to lose excess fat and put on muscle mass.

i will wright out a diet and plan for you...and if you stick with it i guarantee your life will change. not only physically but also mentally. I wont go indpeth about my personaly history, but i have been weight training for over 8 years and trained with some of the best body builders in the industry. needless to say in that time i have changed my life for the better.

anyways...

here is a diet plan for you to follow

i would normally tell anyone to eat 6 to 7 meals a day as it keeps your metabolism going and keeps you in a anabolic state. however, since your young and new to this stick with 3 meals for now.

Breakfast - Cup of oats with skim milk and protien shake/ or 6 eggs and 3 oaks with handfull of nuts / or 1/2 tub of low fat cottage cheese + handfull of nuts

Lunch - Tuna salad with extra virgin olive, small bowl of brown rice and nuts/ or chicken breast grilled with salad or vegies with brown rice and nuts/ or lean meat with the same

Dinner - Chicken breast with green vegies / or lean meat with vegies/ + handful of nuts

Keys things

- Drink 2 - 3 cups of green tea daily. Green tea is a exellent detox and speeds up metabolism

- Only drink cold water (and lots of it). cold water speeds up metabolism as your body has to warm up the water before if processes it.

- Don't be afraid to eat good fats! good fats increases testosterone levels and help with muscle mass

:If you're happy being skinny but want to lose a bit of puppy fat you might want to start doing some cardio. I noticed your exercise is mostly weights (lol) and pushups/situps which aren't going to be as effective as going for a 20 min run or a 45 min bike ride. If I were you I'd just go for a 20 min run everyday before bed. This should help you burn some calories and is relatively easy to do.

Also as others have said you don't need to be eating fatty foods to gain weight, sugar will do it as well, and you'd be surprised how many things get converted into sugar. Simple carbohydrates should be avoided. Maybe cut down on sweet drinks (try to limit your fruit juice/soft drink intake and replace it with water.) A little fruit juice is good but some people go overboard because they think its healthy (it is, but its also high in sugars.) Also try and eat wholemeal carbs instead of white ones. Most people prefer white bread/pasta/rice but the wholemeal types are much better for you and don't get converted into sugars by your body in the same way that the white variety do.

Eating carbs after 1pm doesn't make you fact.

I eat carbs up until 8pm and I stay lean.

Just DROP the sugary stuff such as the gatorade and chocolate milk.

If you can't drink multiple glasses of green tea a day you can get the green tea extract pills and take them twice a day with your bigger meals. I use them, and have noticed good natural weight loss from them and I also take a multivitamin that has lots of vitamin b's and that also boosts my metabolism. The other thing to do if your natural metabolism has slowed down is to do about 30 mins of cardio a day. That can do wonders for boosting your metabolism and for a bonus, your alcohol tolerance will go down and you will become a cheaper drunk. :D

Color of the bread makes no difference at all as to the actual nutritional content of the bread. I've seen 'white' bread thats about as nutritious as that grocery store 'whole wheat' loaf, and I've seen fancy multigrain shit that had the nutritional content of wonderbread.

No carbs after 1 is a stupid rule unless you are not physically active at all. If you actually, you know, do stuff during the day and night, carbs will be stored as glycogen, not fat. Fat is a much longer term storage, and it takes more energy to do the conversion, so if your body knows you are gonna be needing that energy tonight or tomorrow, it will go into glycogen, not fat.

Nothing wrong with juice also. Theres a reason people like sweet things, because we have evolved to digest and burn sugars very easily with very little overhead. It is the body's preferred fuel.

Your suggested diet is boring as hell (any diet with skim milk I automatically ignore, whole milk all the way, even that 2% shit is weaksauce, I don't need milk thats almost the consistency of water), but then again, I don't buy into the whole calorie restriction thing. I say you should be able to eat whatever you want, my stomach says it wants something, it gets it, I just make sure I burn all that fuel. If your muscles aren't beat at the end of the day ready to go to sleep and suck up all that food you ate for repairs and refueling, then you're doing it wrong.

Drop the garbage as a regular part of your diet - the gatorade and chocolate milk. Sugar is more easily accessibly by your body than fat. If your body's full of sugar it will draw on that first before moving on to fat.

Generally, you can enjoy eating pretty much whatever you want as long as it's in moderation. Keep the junk food to a minimum. I'd forget skim-anything, especially at your age. Your body needs some fat in the diet. Eating numerous smaller meals is a big plus, but you can certainly achieve things by eating three meals a day if that's not practical.

The best exercise for buring fat is those that keep your heart rate around 75% of maximum capacity. For a 16 year old the maximum is 204 beats per minute (220 - your age) so your target is around 153 bpm. 125 - 175 should be your goal.

Some muscle fibres use carbohydrates for fuel, some use fat for fuel. Your goal is to ensure your muscles are using fat for fuel.

Heavy aerobic types of exercise that push your heart rate higher than 75% are not the best for losing weight because your muscles will access the most easy source - carbohydrates from the glycogen stored in your muscles.

More steady exercise burns fat initially in the muscles and this is then replenished from your stocks of fat elsewhere on your body. Like your gut. Steady exercise causes fat from your stores to be sent to your muscles to be burned as fuel.

Therefore, weight training can actually be very good for losing weight, as it will keep your heart rate in the ideal zone as long as you don't walk around chatting to everyone for 10 minutes in between sets. Move from exercise to exercise promptly, giving yourself the required rest in between of a minute or two.

If you don't want to do weights, just try out some activities and see where your heart rate sits. Frankly, if you eat well a good brisk walk each day will go a long way to keeping your fat down.
