Why are there so few stock sound effects?

The Doom door effect is everywhere.

Makes me think that id just licensed that one from some stock library.
I was really confused when I heard it in the Star Wars 360 video a few months ago. I knew it was from Doom, and told a friend about it and he told me it was one of those stock sounds.

That child laughter sound drives me crazy.

I LOVE THIS ONE!! lol (there are two different ones, too) (edit: lol this)

Another one I love/hate is the baby crying/laughing. My brother and I always call the baby "Kate" because that was the name of the baby on the kids' show "Arthur", and they ONLY used that sound effect for her.

EDIT: lol, YouTube attaches Kate to the sound effects, too:

Unpopular opinion, I'm sure, but I actually like many stock sound effects. At least, those that involve the kinds used in action (like explosions, blasts, lasers, etc.). The old Mega Man cartoon from the 90s had a really nice, if unoriginal, sound library that I still enjoy to this day.

Wow, for the amount of times I've heard this, I did not realize the first time it was used was in the Diddy Kong Racing intro... interesting stuff.

I don't think that was the first time it came up. I remember hearing that in old shows prior to DKR.

It's not anything from a baby, I cannot find the specific sound but everytime there is a group of children, playing in the park, playground or whatever and it appears. A lot of the time when they run past the camera. Mostly found in TV crime dramas.

Sorta Related: there's a newspaper that gets used over and over and over in countless movies and TV shows - partially as a goof, partially because it's tedious to keep creating new fake newspapers for every project.

Or it could be simply because the studios do not want to pay extra for the design of a newspaper that nobody will notice in the 1-2 frames that its in.

I know this is about effects, but to me the Amen break is the Wilhelm Scream of drum loops.

https://youtu.be/qwQLk7NcpO4

Hard to imagine many forms of breakbeat music without it.

The joy of using that break is unbelievable. I don't think I have ever heard a drummer's set, riff, missed beat, and recording match so well together. I'm not surprised it has survived through the ages, the snare and missed beat especially elevate it far above the likes of the Lynn Collins Think and others. I have a copy of the vinyl but sadly it's not entirely without background noise, it did only cost 50cents in a shop in Toronto though

I can't get over how lazy the Wilhelm scream is. I think it must be an inside joke among sound guys in the industry, like the intentionally bad techno jargon used by writers.
It isn't lazy, it's just an in joke with many sound designers.

It's even used especially in Battlefront and it's hilarious if you hear a bunch together.

Really great video about the break in case anyone hasn't seen/heard it before.

There's a really over-used one that usually means "large fire suddenly starts"
It kind of goes Fwoomp-woooosh!

Oh and I'm pretty sure every single American freight train sounds the same at night.

Yeah these things are impossible to google :D

The one sound effect that always catches my ear is a doorknob sound that is used in EVERY tv show. It stands out mostly because it's the sound of a doorknob on a lightweight/hollow core door, but gets used for everything, including massive metal security doors. Unfortunately, I don't have an example to post...

God, there's that generic woman scream used in almost all horror movies, in many games etc. I can't remember think of a example right now, but i'm pretty sure you know which i'm talking about. It's like the female version of the Wilhelm scream.

My guess is limited budgets where most of the money is allocated somewhere else, believe it or not, most of the sounds you hear on tv have licenses that need to be paid for use, so limited stock sound pools could come for lack of sound department budgeting.

This, and the fact that the majority of people simply don't notice it.

I hate the Wilhelm scream. I hate the idea of these sound guys patting each other on the back putting their fucking stupid in jokes in the movie when it just fucking ruins it for anyone who knows what it is. Well done guys you've shown you've shown you can reference one of the most well known sound effects around, now do your fucking job and create a soundtrack that keeps me immersed in the movie please.

Are you comic book guy or something? You have too much time on your hands to be hating on a sound effect.

Haha thanks.

Fuck Wilhelm Scream haters, it's a glorious tradition.

Baby cries are the worst though. Start listening out for those, because there's (almost) literally like, three baby cries used in all of film and TV history. I noticed it once and now every time I hear a baby cry in something I catch it. Babies cry all the goddamn time, it can't be that hard to pick up some new recordings.

basically any sound that was used in Doom is ruined to me now. I remember as a kid there was some Tim Allen Christmas movie and the reindeer were making demon growls, my brain was very confused.

They don't need to pay a fee every time they use them. The license is for the entire library itself. Once you have the sounds, they are royalty free. Studios updating their stock libraries should be a negligible cost really.

I want to know where I can own the rights to use all the SFX posted in this thread.

I notice this damn stock children laughing sound everywhere (apparently it's called the "Diddy Laugh" because it originated in Diddy Kong Racing):

So annoying.

Came here to post this

Everytime I hear it it just makes me think of the first time I played DKR

Haha it seems like nothing much happened in the news since the 70s, since Eric Forman is reading it too
