I'm a bit annoyed about this because my Canon 510 is the first gadget I've bought in years and I assumed that all new tech would be able to use any type of battery but now it turns out that my camera can't use the NiC whatever battereies I got free with the charger I bought. Is this a problem with other devices as well?

hmm, my Fuji camera uses Ni HC just fine (I know they aren't the same) but that's the only battery type I've tried with it. Anyway, that sucks dude. I really don't know the answer to your question I just thought I'd let you know I empathise.

My Fuji wont allow me to use the included stand/charger with anything but the included battery. If I buy AA Rechargeable's i cant use the stand/charger with them. =\

yeah, I've only ever used the batteries included with the Fuji charger. You know what? I'm no help in this thread what-so-ever.

If there's a technical reason why it can only use NiNH batteries then I'm willing to accept that, but if it can only use the Canon NiNH batteries like it says in the manual then fcuk them I'm sending it back. I'm not in the mood for this siht.

Ni-Cad batteries are only 1.2 volts (and dropping lower than that during discharce), other battery types are closer to 1.5.

Ok, so I could accept that as a technical reason, but I'm still sending it back if I can't just use any NiNH batteries. Anyone know about this with regard to the a510?

The A510 can be powered by two standard AA-type batteries, alkaline, NiMH (nickel metal hydride), or lithium cells. Canon claims with AA Alkaline batteries you can capture approx. 80 shots (LCD on), 240 shots (LCD off), and 180 minutes of continuous playback time. With NiMH cells Canon clams approx. 300 shots (LCD on), 800 shots (LCD off), and 300 minutes of continuous playback time. Canon also offers a battery and charger kit CBK4-200 that includes both a charger unit and four rechargeable AA-size NiMH batteries. The A510 can also be powered by the AC Adapter Kit ACK800 for unlimited runtime from your wall outlet.

Ahahah. Is that the reason why I had a hard time keeeping the canon camera alive more than a minute max? Shit no wonder why these brand new batteries died almost right away :lol

Weird.. my rebel lasts over 600 shots before the battery is near recharging..
