Why do breakfast restaurants let you pick toast or pancakes with your food?

You know, as if toast and pancakes are somehow equals. Who the fuck would ever choose a piece of toast over pancakes? Nobody. I get asked that and it's just like, what? I can actually get a plate of pancakes with hot syrup, delicious stuff, and you're asking me if I would want toast instead of that? Do I look like some kind of moron?

I will never understand toast eaters. It's just bland filler when you could be eating something with actual flavor and substance.

I've never been to a breakfast place that let you substitute pancakes for toast for no additional cost.

I'm not huge into toast, but if the restaurant makes their own bread and offers a hearty multigrain then it can be worthwhile.

If ur not trying to eat too much carbs/sugar in the morning then you go with the toast. Pancakes and syrup and butter would just make me sleepy. If I was off that mourning/day, sure, I'd probably go with the pancakes even moreso if I didn't have a starchy meal the day/night before.

I mean if your eating out often then toast is the healthy choice. For me its always pancakes cuz i dont go out for breakfast much. Usually the bread and pancakes are of similar quality so even shitty pancakes > shitty toast IMO

Maybe somebody prefers toast to pancakes? I know I'd rather have whoalmeal toast and cottage cheese than pancakes.

By the way, when you buy a toasted sandwich with eggs, bacon, and a tomato slice with a side of potatoes/hashbrowns.

It's the same thing as ordering one of the basic platters but the food isnt built into a sandwich for you.

But the platter will cost more.

Pancakes are a mood. If I'm having pancakes I probably don't have much to do for the rest of the day.
I agree with this statement. From a palette standpoint, toast goes well with more dishes as a side. Pancakes feel more like a main dish to order.

One of my favorite things to do while away for work is to hit up a breakfast/brunch spot and grab an outdoor seat (great benefit of c19 imo), enjoy a tasty meal and a few cups of coffee and people watch. I generally don’t watch what I eat on Saturdays so waffles, french toast or pancakes are almost always on the plate.

I love when a place has fancy pancakes. This one local chain here in San Diego has shit like pineapple upside down pancakes, they will let you sub one for the toast with the egg platters (for a mark up but I ain’t paying lol) so that’s nice 😊

My fantasy is that my girlfriend was actually a young high school girl.
In Australia pancakes themselves are the main meal. Toast is a side. It's not a simple choice, you choose a pancake if you want something sweet or you get a toast with your savoury meal. It's more of a choice between sweet or savoury.

Pancakes are way too stodgy for a breakfast side. I always go for toast.

I'd probably pick toast honestly. Don't like pancakes. It's just wet sweet bread. Now waffles are a completely different story.

I agree they are not equal. Sometimes I don’t want an entire extra breakfast (pancakes) with my meal. Sometimes...

If I'm ordering eggs over easy, I'm going to want toast to soak up the yolks.

Also textural contrast is a good thing, sometimes i want some crunch that pancakes just can't provide. Pancakes are probably 4th option for me for generic breakfast carb. French toast > waffles > toast > pancake. If we add biscuits and bagels into the mix, pancakes drop even further.

If I'm carb binging and getting a whole stack of pancakes that's one thing, but as a side item to a regular breakfast, pancakes are pointless.

Depends on my mood on a given day, really. I agree, most days (since I don't eat out that often and pancakes are a rare treat) I'll go with the cakes, but sometimes I'm just not up for something so heavy and sweet.
