Why do gamers looking to purchase a Cube typically ignore Pikmin 2?

It's always Mario, Metroid, Zelda, with the core reason for buying the system being of course Resident Evil 4. I think this is the reason why this gem has sold so poorly. It's probably one of the best if not THE best Gamecube game. Graphics, gameplay, tons of content. It's a really awesome game. Why did everyone ignore this one?

I own a Gamecube and nearly 60 games, but I never bought Resident Evil 4(or any RE for that matter), Metroid Prime 1 or 2, or Pikmin 1 or 2.

I'm probably the only one in the world who can claim that.

I bet people didn't like the first one as just ignored the sequel. That's how it often is. Look at Metroid Prime 2, Viewtiful Joe 2 and Splinter Cell PT/CT.

Pikmin2 doesn't look like instant fun. Puzzlegames don't sell very well anymore and Pikmin just looks like lemmings, which I played a lot in the past (don't want more of te same for an high price).

I like Nintendo games but I won't even WANT to try pikmin.
Give me mario or zelda any day, but no Pikmin please.

Probably ignored it because there isn't a lot of running and killing and gore :D

And it takes more than reflexes to play as well.

It probably has to do with many that own the 'Cube that didn't really dig the first one after trying it out. I imagine it's the same thing for most of the sequels to big first outings on the GC. They buy, all hyped up and ready to love. After they play it, they might not be so in love with gameplay offered therein...hence the sequel sucks wind at retail compared to the first.

Despite the great gameplay, a lot of people won't see past the graphics and colorful presentation. A while back, I was playing Pikmin 2 at my place when a friend came over. He watched me play for about a minute and said "this game's gay." He then told me to play good games like "The Getaway."

Gamers are so jaded these days, you only have 5 minutes to impress them. Otherwise, anyone who hasn't played Pikmin 2 or other such gems on the GameCube is missing out.

Or *gasp* they just don't like the game. Just because something's polished to hell and back, offers uniquely interesting gameplay, and has a lot of fans, doesn't mean the majority will take a liking to it.

And you're right...gamers are jaded nowadays...partly because they have so much more choice. Back when Nintendo 'could do no wrong,' you didn't as many choices in games across so many competing, equally-viable platforms....at least, nothing like it has been since the 32-bit console era.

I understand the idea that gamers are superficial...video games are a largely visual medium, always have been. If it doesn't grab you by its looks and you've got other choices (on that platform or others), you probably won't stick with it. When you're younger, you don't usually have much choice in what you're 'stuck' with, as far as a gaming platform and maybe even the games. So, you have to play what you have.

When you're younger, you are more easily-impressed and sucked into games. I think that's a big part of why Nintendo's games are largely very similar to what they've done in the past and it tends to skew younger...it works for that age-group...not saying that Nintendo's stuff is teh kiddy, but really...they go after that market with a vengeance...always have.

Of course, this is all just my opinion.

I thought Pikmin 1 was good. Not good enough to buy 2 without question. I almost did when it got very decent reviews, but a few gamers who I trust (and unlike the typical GAF characterization don't just play "blood" games) told me it was rather tiresome compared to the first. So I figure it's worth waiting till it's as cheap as the first. There's just too many good games out there.

Pikmin is not Lemmings, though. The gameplay couldn't be more different. Pikmin has more in common with real-time strategy games than anything in Lemmings.

I think the game does suffer from bad impressions of the first game and just a general dislike of the visual/audio style. If you hated the look in Wind Waker and SMS, you're sure as hell aren't likely to be swayed by Pikmin's look. I'm disappointed that the game doesn't get more praise (especially considering that a main complaint against Nintendo is that they make games with the same IP over and over), but it doesn't matter as long as Nintendo thinks it's worth returning to.

Your friends steered you wrong. Pikmin 2 is fantastic.

I don't like Pikmin. Either of them. I thought it was the time limit rushing me on the first which did it, but having played the second...I guess it's just the basic play mechanics.

I won't buy another, it's clearly not for me. Unless they remove the day/night feature, or at least let me stay out at night and just make it more dangerous, I hate having to bring my Pikmin back.

Well, let me reassure you that your friends were quite right. It's a good game, but nowhere near as good as the first, and it does get a bit dull in spots, as you spend the majority of your time wandering around the rather dull caves.

Pikmin 1 >>>> Pikmin 2

I returned pikmin 2 and kept 1

I liked the time limit in the first game - gave me something to aim for, and the whole 'do I save or risk another day before saving' provided some risk to weigh up against potential reward.

And the dungeons are bloody annoying. Pikmin for me is as much about the environments and sense of wonder as the gameplay. And the dungeons get dull after 5 or 6. And its annoying when you don't know how deep they are, so you end up abandoning and retrying, only to find out that there was only one level left and you could probably have managed.

The two characters in Pikmin 2 are good and avoid you having to do too much backtracking, but thats a minor update for me.

Graphics and basic controls are about the same in both games.

This is why I generally hate random dungeons. If you don't get them right, you end up with poorly designed, boring as hell trials.

The Getaway? Didn't that get luke warm to horrible reviews?

That's the problem with some gamers today. Their idiots. :lol

J/K

But seriously, it's not gay.

I didn't like Pikmin 1, that's why i've avoided Pikmin 2. The game looks dazzling but the gameplay isn't all that spectacular for me. Nice concept though.

If you don't like Pikmin you must have poor organisation skills or something, Pikmin is about multitasking, and I love the feeling of successfully doing 5 things at once. Pikmin 2 is one of my favourite games of all time, I can turn that on and do anything and have fun, just walking around in those awesome environments is fun, I really think everyone should play it, and with an open mind.

it just looks boring. a description makes it sound boring: cutesy pseudo-rts about collecting junk. the concept is vaguely charming, but i had no interest at all in pikmin when i bought my cube. i ended up renting it on a whim and enjoying it far more than mario sunshine, the game that i bought the system for. never saw it coming, though.

its because Pikmin's only $20

$50 versus $20 = no contest

and it doesn't help that Pikmin 2 doesn't look much different from Pikmin

While everyone says Nintendo is going down the tube, when they release a game like this it restores my faith a little more. While I enjoy the old franchises they need to realize they need to release a broad ammount of games for everyone. Metroid is a great reminder that not all their franchises are kiddish. I myself don't mind the kiddish games as much, but the DS seems to be coming out with them in full force for the time being.

A Pikmin DS would make great use of the touch screen with wi-fi co-op and multiplayer.

I own a Gamecube and a copy of Pikmin 2 and I'm still ignoring it. And I loved the first one. It's just that every time I go to play it something else comes out that jumps right to the top of the list and I figure I'll play Pikmin 2 next. Kinda sad, really. Poor little bastards don't have a shot without me. Sometimes I hear them crying in my sleep.

:lol yeah, even now that i know pikmin is fun, i can't bring myself to play pikmin 2. and i've owned a copy since its us release. "well, i could play pikmin 2, but i'd rather continue my exhaustive survey of games about hitting things with swords." poor pikmin.

Pikmin 1 was great, but I honestly think Pikmin 2 is far superior.

Pikmin 2 has this 'surreal' thing about it. I don't know what it is, but I like it. One of my favorites this generation.

I think everyone has to try it whenever the game finally hits 20 bucks or so. Worth the price of admission, EVEN at 50 bucks IMO.

I think it just doesn't look like a killer app to most people until they try it. Actually for me, the original game did look like a killer when it was unveiled, but it's too unconventional for mainstream appeal.

I dunno, but I didn't snatch it when I saw it used. Mayyyyybe I'll get it eventually, when it becomes Players Choice. Damn backlog.

Pikmin 2 >>>>>>> Pikmin 1. It does rock quite a bit, and the multiplayer modes are quite good as well. The lack of an overall time limit thing is definitely good. That really made the game better, in my opinion.

And Bristow.. awww, would you like it better if the Pikmin carried guns? That would make it seem it was designed for a higher age group than 3.. perhaps 8 or so. :D

Pikmin 2 is a good game, but I agree with those who have said the first one outclasses it. The dungeons were definitely aggravating...and was anybody else bothered at all by the unending tide of "subtle" in-game advertising? It wasn't so bad at first, but when you've collected a bottle cap for 6 different brands of soda...it begins to grate on one's nerves...

Nah, I don't need violence in games to be entertained - that isn't my complaint with the game. I'm just saying that the casual gamer is gonna look at the boxart and think it's a game designed for small children.

Actually.. I thought this was the best form of in-game advertising I have ever seen. It was hilarious to find 7up bottle caps, batteries, and that shoe polish, and etc. I thought it was quite cool, actually.. :)

You know, looking back, I don't think it would have bothered me if it wasn't for the names they gave them every time you found one. If every bottle cap or battery you found didn't have to be the "Infinite Energy Capacitator" or "Divine Thirst Quencher" it would have settled better for me. :D

Wow. I had no idea Pikmin 2 was so inherently unappealing. Thanks everyone.

I'd certainly say that both the Pikmin games are my favorite games this generation when it comes RTS --- charm, art-direction, new IP, etc. too....

They're just great, It wouldn't be a streatch to say they might be my favorite games this generation --- and certainly my fav new IP...

But the fact is --- they just aren't that appealing (mostly visually) ..... in the sense that if Mario was a new IP today, it wouldn't do well at all...

Pikmin has the charm and delight of Mario, DonkeyKong, zelda, Metroid, ect .... It just came a couple decades too late.

Because Pikmin, when said in Norwegian, sounds dangerously close to "my dick". Kids don`t want to say "I want my dick" to their parents.

I have it, and actually did play it for a half hour or so. I remember something about the saving system pissed me off, though -- I think I saved before going into a dungeon, then lost all my Pikmin, then chose to reload from my last save only to have the game not give me any of my Pikmin back, or something like that -- and so I turned it off in frustration and went on to some other games. I'll get back to it some day...

Oh, and I loved the first one.
