Why do people expect artists to perform like they did 20+ years prior?

Take Metallica for example, people constantly hammering them because they can't play their old stuff like they used to. Their in there 50s now.

Same for Black Sabbath, except their in there 60s.

Same can be said for just about any music act thats been playing and touring for a long time. Especially if they are playing stuff that requires more endurance.

Do people not understand what happens to the body as you age? Sure maybe if the drugs where cut out/back and they took better care of themselves when they where younger they may be playing better, but still not like they did 25, 30, or 40 years ago.

Because their ticket prices aren't what they used to be 20+ years ago

But yea ageing or being unhealthy simply sucks; and living on the road takes its toll

Expose the ageism in our culture.

People seem to expect artists in their 50s-60s to either stop trying and just wait it out until they die, or, if they do perform/tour/etc., to be as amazing as they were in their peak.

yeah, it's quite idiotic, expecially from high-energy bands, but when I went to see the Roxy Music back in 2001 they sounded pristine, which was a pleasant surprise

Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel also can sound pretty damn similar to their younger selves still if they're in shape

Nostalgia, and an unwillingness to move forward.

People want the same old shit from these guys, and then they get disappointed when those artists don't actually grow or mature in their sound.

Not music related but...

Its kinda cruel how the fact that we have now better ways to record image and sound makes even harder for famous people to grow old

i can watch a ghostbusters blu ray today and see a really really young Dan Aykroyd. The video is so crisp i even forget its an old movie. It looks like it was just released.

Then if i see Dan Aykroy today ill be like "he is... old." And its a bit of a shock. I remember when i saw Harold Ramis in a seth rogen movie, i didnt even recognized him, but i remember Egon's face with ease.

Fortunally famous people have pools of money that help em cope with this kinds of setbacks

I dont know if people "expect" it as much as they just want them to. It would be nice if all my favorite bands consistently put out material on par with their best work.

Fucking Wolf Parade...
