Why do people hate Cam Newton?

Cam Newton seems to have a growing group of people that strongly dislike him. From my observation, they do not like that he celebrates touchdowns or somethin? I guess he has a thing where he dances after a touchdown and gives the ball to a kid in the crowd. I've also heard people think he's trying to promite his brand or something during the game. But I've seen tons of players celebrate similarly with no issue. Are people just playing the "the quarterback must be a serious player" card just because he's black? I don't know if the sports media is overblowing this, but it felt like people were acting so concerned over nothing.
 
He's black. Lots of people like their black athletes to be seen and not heard. When they show off, it's a sign of cockiness, when a white player shows off he's just having fun.
 
I'm pretty sure my dad just hates him because he's up against the Broncos.

If it's any consolation, my dad hates him a lot less than he hates Tom Brady.
 
There are multiple issues that cloud the landscape of this guy.

Some of it is the way he goes about things at his coveted position while being a black guy. It's obvious that it's racial in motivation.

Some hate him cause NFL fans hate everyone who isn't their guy on their team.

Some of it stems from aledged shady shit his father might have been involved with in the college world of shady athletics.

Finally he brought some of this on himself as he made a stupid move at Florida with some laptops that can be used as a scape goat especially for camp #1.

I like Cam but he did have his dumb moments (Superman pose after TD in a losing game) early in his career which people haven't let slide. Others have called him out for being too emotional and moody on the sidelines as well -- especially during losing games.

I'm sure some of it can be attributed to race.
 
I don't hate him.

His ego could do with a little deflation though, but that could be said about a lot of the players on the field.

No, it just happens to line up nicely. Old school football fans just expect quarterbacks to be emotionless and robotic. Maybe do some smiling and high-fiving, but definitely no show-boating. "Look at me" type stuff is immediately seen as a heel move in football, where "professionalism" means acting as vanilla as possible.

I became a Cam fan after I saw that he was still going to school to finish his degree. That's some super respectable stuff there. But before I knew that, I thought he was cocky.
 
He's big, he's black, and that's scary to some people.

He probably accepted money to go to Auburn (there was a whole saga with his father and an agent), but it's not like he is a likely rapist who had his crime covered up (like Jameis Winston).

Most hatred is tied in to Racism.
 
He's a thug who celebrates too much because he's classless. Compare that to someone, say like Brett Favre who used to celebrate often because he was just having fun out there and loved the game.

I'm a Falcons fan, he's good and plays for the Panthers. It's easy to get mad when he celebrates while playing us. I also really hope he doesn't get a ring.

Though he's not a Saint, so I guess he ain't all bad.

Either way, like I said, he's a damn good player and who gives a shit about the celebrating thing? But seriously, fuck him when he celebrates against us.
 
There are a few reasons people might not like him

He's black
He celebrates even moderately successful plays
He took money in college
He was caught stealing a laptop
He wears hats with racoon fur

Its hard to know which reason someone would use to dislike him, although I'd bet it is the last option for most people.

Nobody seemed to mind Colin Kapernick's showboating.
 
I think he is quite popular and well liked. I see that lucky tank commercial on tv all the time. Marketers wouldnt use him to sell Gatorade if they didn't think he was likeable to most people.
 
Also, shame on people automatically placing a large blame on his race...

Russel Wilson is black and nowhere near as revered as Cam and yet has dominated superbowls/playoffs in recent years. it has a lot to do with his ego and show-boatism. Also, it's not like he came out of college with a great rep... lots of people hated him then for some stupid laptop stealing incident and when his dad tried to make a buck off him.

also, kids love cam. ive been to some giants games and the dads are wearing gmen shirts and all the kids have cam shirts on.


he's a super nice guy too off the field.


also, he's handsome.

dude can do no wrong! people are just looking for a heel now that bradys out. - the level of public hate for cam came out of the clsoet as soon as brady lost, and cam kept dominating
 
People want star black athletes to not be cocky. Star black athletes are judged more strictly on this than other ethnicities.

People want QBs to be boring robots because that's classy. QBs are judged more strictly on this than other positions.

Brady checks one of those boxes, he gets shit. Newton checks both, he gets a multiplied level of shit.

Yeah, early in his career he had some problematic stuff. There was the Pro Bowl thing too where he got taught a lesson for being a bit of an ass.

I'm not a Cam Newton fan myself, but having watched a bit more of him this year, it seems like he's grown up considerably.
 
That people seriously complain about a football player grandstanding after his team scores is mindboggling to me.

Like he's exhausted and high on adrenaline in front of a crowd of thousands of people who are cheering him on. What do you expect him to do?
