Why do people pick up smoking cigerretes these days?

This isn't a shaming thread, just a genuine curiosity.

The detrimental health effects are pretty well known these days, and anti-smoking campaigns out in full force it seems. Are new smokers generally still young people? Are they pressured into doing it? Addiction after the occasional casual smoke? Conscious choice as an adult?

In my circle of friends, aside from a very infrequent cigarette at parties/outing, none of them have picked it up as a habit. Even in my general age group, regular smoking is not something I've noticed as a popular trend. Is today's youth picking up smoking as much as before? Are the majority of smokers holdovers from previous eras?

i did because i was deployed and it was the most legal way to relax because we were limited to 2 alcoholic drinks a night.

used to have 3 drink saturdays until some stupid underage chick from finance drove a truck onto the makeshift basketball court after 3 drinks. THREE DRINKS

I think we're reaching the point where the only young people who will still be smoking in about 10 years are actors, and they'll only take up smoking as a means to land roles in period pieces about the 60s/70s/80s/90s.

I dunno. Where I live, smoking is pretty darn rare except for some Asian immigrants.

I think it starts as trying to be cool and then just becomes a terrible addiction that is extremely hard to break.

Obviously because smoking makes you look cool as fuck, bro

Cool as a mother fucker

Tobacco is ridiculous, what is even the point?

I totally get smoking weed coz it actually does something but tobacco is just pointless.

Smoking does look cool.

Still kills you though.
Does it still actually look cool though? I know a lot of people I've met see it as an immediate turn off. For some reason smoking cigarettes to look cool feels like such a 90's thing.

I will say, Don Draper's classy as fuck look wouldn't be complete without a lucky strike in his hand.

Smoking a cigarette with people is pretty great when drunk but I'll always choose weed over tobacco.

I've recently moved from spliffs to straight joints.

There's nothing like lighting up a cig after smoking a J. Nicotine + THC is a great combo.

I don't think ti even looks cool anymore, most people I know are turned off by it, girls and guys alike.

Kids start smoking because they're want that smooth Carolina flavor, flue-cured to perfection in our antique barns.

Tobacco gives you a bigger buzz when you're drunk at least when you start out, then eventually you get hooked.

Peer pressure

If they are around people that smoke a lot.

For example, working in a restaurant.
Yeah, I suspect it's mainly this. I avoid it but have been offered cigarettes before, twice by the same person. Someone may just go with the flow and say "yes" or have it so often they do it just to shut someone up, then they get stuck with it as a habit.

It's probably a lot of why they're being so hard on depicting it in media, I'd rather they not get worked up over it but at the same time people CAN be stupid, which is sort of a double edged sword with this sort of thing.

Weed through a vape is literally a bazillion times better than tobacco. I wish i'd never mixed the two. Quit both when I found out I was going to be a dad but the tobacco addiction made me a prick for a bit.

I did enjoy being cool like snakes at the time.

You're assuming everybody who starts cares about their health. Smoking has a higher rate among the poor. The poor tend to be more stressed so living a healthy lifestyle isn't always a priority. Their children see the see this. Rinse and repeat.

I dunno, I smoke cigars and cigarillos occasionally, usually at parties or when I go for a nice introspective stroll. I find it relieving, and for whatever reason (be it chemical or otherwise), I find it helps get the creative juices flowing a bit.

Still gross though. If I smoke more than a couple a week, I feel like shit, so I keep the smoking to a minimum.

ive never understood it,either, you'd think most people would just not do it by now given all the health risks. such a turn off for me after finding out a cute girl smokes cigs, nothing worse than kissing a smoker.

Because they are legal and not that hard to get, whereas most other things a young person might want to try smoking are illegal and harder to get.

I started smoking when I was around 14 I think and it was mostly because friends were smoking. It was not like I felt they "pressured" me into smoking. In fact it was kind of the opposite, where we were all poor so no one wanted to share cigarettes, but it's basically, "hey, I can't afford to smoke weed all day, so cigarettes can kind of tide me over through the school day".

The better question is, why do I continue to smoke? The answer, my girlfriend does too. If she quit I could quit, but I find it impossible to even try when she makes no effort to.

I started smoking while I was in Iraq. I figured it was less harmful then getting shot or blown up. I quit almost 2 years ago now.

Smoking is stupid , it's all marketing. Now the marketing is mostly banned the amount of people who take up smoking has cratered... I wonder why
Because it's shitty shitty shitty drug

I get weed, I get hard drugs, hell I even get alcohol (even though it's about the shittiest drug you can do after nicotine... at least wines and ports can taste nice).
But nicotine? The only drug that does not cause any high, it's just a substance you become dependant on and the only 'high' is coming back up to the neutral baseline from before you smoked for a few minutes, then dropping back below.
Congrats on dropping your baseline quality of life and becoming dependant on regular doses of expensive poison to reverse the change.

Which refers me back to the start of my post.

People who smoke aren't cool, they're dumb. If you want to get high do a real drug (and that still won't make you cool...)

My friend started because it was the only way to get a break working as a waiting. The high stress of the job probably didn't help things either. What's weirder is that he stopped at the drop of a hat for a few months and then began again.

It really isn't worth it.
