Why does my Internet connection keep dying?

Okay, so the setup here is two PCs with WinXP SP2, firewall turned on, and ZoneAlarm off, connected to a LinkSys router.

Every now and then, the Internet connection icon which is always hidden on the taskbar anyway, will show up, with an animation like the two computers are reconnecting. I don't know if it's actually obtaining a new IP address at that point that.

At that same time, AIM will disconnect, and just die. It won't even try to reconnect, because the connection is, at that point, just completely gone, until it does its thing. (new IP?)

What the hell is causing this? It seems to only be happening on my PC too, and it's very annoying.

But seriously, what kind of connection are you attempting to connect at? Also, check the master router and make sure nothing got kicked loose.

What provider you have?
Verizon and Road Runner are having problems in NYC, something to do with the suns location this time of year.

I just want the connection to keep AIM alive 24/7.

RoadRunner in NYC. But it's not happening to my friend's PC, at least not that he's aware of... only me.

I really never experienced this problem much with DSL. Once in a while, not a whole lot. However, I found that this problem seems to happen more often with a cable connection. Not much now, but every once in a blue. However, when you're getting speeds above 9000k a second (like me, with my optimum online) you really can't complain too much when your connection drops or slows down for a short amount of time. With that said, be advised that excessive downloading can also make your modem slow down to a crawl. You need to periodically reboot your modem for optimum speed. This works wonders for me.

Happens all the fucking time with my wireless LinkSys router. Pisses me off to no end. The damn thing worked flawlessly for a couple weeks, and now it can't maintain shit, so I'm back to primarily being wired directly. Fucking lame.

I haven't had that trouble with the powerbooks, but I did have a similar problem with a RedHat 8 linux box and an XP box. I was able to trace it down to the crap ass Linksys gear (that the downstairs machines were connected to for the second time) and then moved to Netgear and swore off Linksys forever. Problem went away.

because you forgot to feed it.

Your mom was right when she told you you should start of with connectivity before you got an internet of your own.

This probably isn't the solution, but for some reason it was enabled with my network card:

Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Network Card Properties -> Power Management

For some reason, Windows actually has a setting that will shut down the network card after a certain period of inactivity.

Sorry for bumping this up but I have a friend who has the same problem. I remember reading in two different threads that there was something with WinXP and linksys router that made the connection fail. I remember someone giving a link and explaining how you had to modify something in the registry to make it work. I didn't find the thread with the search option. Any one know what was the deal with that?

I have this problem but it reconnects after a few seconds...its really fucking annoying having a shit-ton of those messages pop up to tell you everyone has just signed on and having my buddy list pop up when i don't want it...
