Why does the GAF rock?

I was just thinking about the forum, in that before coming here, I never visited any forums before. Well, I did frequent Daily Radar back in the day, but other than that, I never bothered.

What I really like about this place boils down to two things... simplicity and maturity.

The first is easy. I really enjoy the fact that there's only one forum for gaming. It seemed odd at first, but I like seeing threads I wouldn't otherwise care about, and happen to be helpful and/or interesting. I don't think I'd enjoy this place as much if it were filtered to fit each system. Also, because I'm on dialup, I feel like I can come on the forums and get all the latest gaming news much faster than waiting for websites to load each individual story.

The second, maturity... Well, perhaps there's just one thing I like about this place. :D Seriously though, I like the great variety of posters we have. Every base is covered, plus it's nice having a few guys who work in the industry around. After Daily Radar dissolved back in the day, I remember trying to blend into some other forums, but they never lasted more than a week. And of course, behemoth sites like IGN or GameFAQs forums may have their charm (is charm even the right word?), but it wasn't until stumbling to GAF that I became a true forum-goer again.

What do you like most about GAF?

yeah, I used to visit IGN forums, but didn't do much forum-going again until I discovered GAF during the Megaton debacle...

I like it because dumbass IGN and GameFAQS kiddies get banned for the type of crap that they get away with at their respective sites.

Big up to the old Nintendorks crew :)

I ended up on GAF after some guy on a PGC IRC chat told me to check it out. His name was Link on the chat, so maybe that's the same Link on the boards. What's funny is it was late and I was SUPERBORED that night, so I went on IRC to chat, probably my first time ever doing that.

That was so long ago, two forums ago actually :p

One of the reasons is because we only let a handful of people act like stupid trolls- and that's because we're nice and take care of the mentally handicapped. We (the mods/admins) ban people without warning, yet we don't ban people for no reason. Well, with the exception of Serafitia, but I'm working on that, honest.

GAF Rocks because of:

Everything I need is within reach. The trolling in the gaming forum is a bit much for me at times, but news and discussion on topics that interest me are prevalent in both sections of the forum. It's pretty much perfect.

I love the international aspect. There are so many posters from all over the world, it just adds to the whole flair of the forum. The only problem I got with the forum is the software.

can I join the GAF circle jerk? :)

I enjoy GAF because a forum is what you make for yourself.

its just good for wasting time. That doesnt make it rock, its just....there.

+ The Gaming Forum is a good source for information. Maybe the best source for videogame information to please the information junkies of the internet.

At least thats how I see it.

GAF is good because news is usually posted very quickly, there is alot of knowledgable posters, you can find logical discussions and even people with strong opinions post their rationale for feeling the way they do.

It rocks because unlike any other forum or even the real world, the majority of people here are smart.

Gaming forum's no better than GameFAQs (only with more jaded cynics than 13 year olds); this one is okay but it has its days

Reasons GAF rocks

- A all in one news/review/preview source for gaming includinghuge E3 coverage straight from the event reports etc.

- industry insiders, beta testers, devs etc...real info regarding pressing gaming issues and technical info that might be second to the DCTP boards

- a sense of humor...gotta laugh with most of the things you guys come up with..

- Sponsorship from G4TV! IGN etc

- one of the best OT boards on the net

- and the only poster that " signs his name after every post " ;)

Gaming forum - excellent way to find news and impressions...and I find the trolling and long-winded snob discussions entertaining. :)

Off-topic forum - I'll go against the stream (that's what it feels like, at least) and say OT forum is not as good as the gaming forum. Still, it's a nice place for other news, and the occasionally funny life-experience thread and random silly flash animation.

Gaming Forum

All news fresh in one place - like many have said, it's THE place for any gaming news. I stopped totally visiting any gaming websites after discovering GAF back in 2002. It's all here, and more.

Sales updates - lots of sales data, speculation and good analysis. Props for the posters bringing new data in.

Industr33 in5idurs - there are actually very educated posters in the boards.

Tough banning policy - keeps the idiots out. No "Gaffers am crying xbox5 by nitnendo" type of crap. Rather mature.

Well articulated postings - usually.

Off-topic

A good variety of stuff that interests me - iPod, politics, lesbian kisses between Christina + Avril, shroom experiences, music, dating stories, origins of fhuta, movies and all that. It's almost like FHM, but wilder.

Great for laughts - lots of smart comedians here.

Intercultural - goes with Games forum too. People from all around the world, you learn all sorts of new stuff.

It's great because I get to see the dumb stuff I normally would spent my entire life without seeing.

Of course, I am talking about the calf with 7 legs..

7 legs! WTF

It's great because you get the latest news, you see stupid arguments about things people doesn't give a fuck except 3 freaks, the OT fauna (the greatest elements of it being Kinesis and Shuri), the great words/expressions that make our vocabulary richer such as "Megaton", "let me touch you", "6.8", "FHUTA", but mainly because there is an element called Wario 64 who makes me feel like an idiot every time he posts a game on discount (like an idiot because I obviously paid the full price).

Werd. A lot of Nintendorks migrated over, myself included all those years ago.

Firstly, gaming forum is one single and neat forum with a good amount of users online at every time of the day. Discussions tend to be intelligent and opinions passionately argued for. Gaming news gets posted so quickly and efficiently that hitting other online gaming sites becomes redundant.

Next, the OT forum rocks with weird topics on everything; be it books, music, sex, relationships and the occasional drunk threads. You name something weird, OT has got it.....

It would rock if there were a world map where you could see the location of all users.
There's a message board I'm visiting that has this function:
http://24tv-forum.de/map.php
Most users on that board live in Germany or adjacent countries and yet the map looks already cool.
Imagine a world map where you can see hundreds of little points all over the globe with the knowledge that each one represents a user who contributes to this forum! :)

This is so important. Just look at Opa Ages (if you DARE) to see why it's important this general policy is implemented.

I understand that. I'm just saying having a forum like GA, size wise and content wise, is much more valuable than harboring one with a mentality like OA. GA could be a bigger OA if we just abandoned the rules, but the forum would fucking suck if it went in that direction, much like how OA is just a sidebar to GA for the majority of posters who frequent both.

Nah, the gaming forum is great for news. If you don't like the trolling, just stop reading past the first post. I do prefer the OT though.

I miss the photoshop competitions though. That's something this forum lacks. We used to have great ones, now it seems if one comes up, no one can be arsed (or, like me, simply can't).

Definately apperciated. I check OA time to time - today the thing seemed to be Reirom bragging about having a pirated Guardian Heroes.

Although Reirom must be the best and most consistent joke character ever created, who the fuck is so evil as to pirate Treasure, whose games sell bad even without piracy due to their niche strategy to cater hardcore gamers with highest possible quality?

well the news was always fantastic on GA, thats why i started posting to begin with. but as i dont game all that much anymore, the news basically doesnt excite me like it used to...so its relative. if you still game a lot, obviously it'll be very exciting to you. even then, back when i joined all these sales stuff was not there at all, may be some hardware numbers monthly to keep track of, to see whether the DC was gonna be able to hold off the PS2 onslought...it boggles my mind to see people actually keeping pdf files and excell spreadsheets and actually "tracking" these numbers now. hell ppl seem to place "bets" on how games will perform in the upcoming month!
its pretty terrifying.

True, though the OT has its fair share of stupid threads too. I mean, what the hell is with starting a topic where you just write a one line lyric without even naming the song?

I admit nothing tops threads dedicated to guessing sales figures though.
