Why does Word do this?

You when you go to insert or change a word in a line, and instead of shifting everything already written after it, it just gradually eats away at it, writing over it? Whenever I'm using it, it just seems to randomly start doing it, and I don't know how to get it to stop. I mean I'm I accidentally hitting a hotkey command that I'm not aware of. And it's 1:35am, I have another 1700 words by tomorrow to write by tomorrow and I'm knackered from working the last five nights in a row. ARGGGGGGGGGGGHHHH.

Yeah in the lower right hand corner of the screen/window if "OVR" is shown in black then the 'eating' is activated. If it is greyed out, it won't do that. You can toggle that with the insert key, as those above have mentioned.

And I thought this was going to be a thread about how "Track Changes" results in a 10 MB file.

Microsoft's WORD 97 has an unusual hidden 'egg' ... a pinball game that you can play! To discover this free, hidden game, run Word 97 and then follow these steps exactly:

Open a new document.
Type the word "BLUE" (in uppercase and without quotes).
Highlight the word.
From the menu, select "Format" and "Font", and change the color to blue.
Make the word bold-faced.
Click at the end of the word "blue", type a space.
Click "Help" from the menu, select "About Microsoft Word".
Click on the Word icon.
After a few moments, you should see a pinball game on the left with programmer's names scrolling on the right. Right flipper=M, left flipper=Z, exit=ESC

No way, I'm completely self-taught in computer use. I've never read a manual or had anything explained to me. I thought that key was some useless throwback to DOS or something.

Stop drinking milk, the problem will go away by itself.

I had the whole "insert" deal down back when the best word processor on the market was for DOS.

(Since this thread is turning into a pissing contest.) :p

Hmm...this got me thinking...does anyone actually use the insert key? I've never used or needed it, and I program a lot.

Since we're on the subject of simple fixes...when I had my Win98 machine it seemed once every month or so whenever I'd hit the TAB key, all windows would minimize. It stopped doing that after a reboot, but I never figured out why it did that.

Any clue? I just wanna know.

I'm pretty much self-taught with word and such these days, and even I figured out the crazy insert thing. You know, the paper clip help guy maybe annoying, but can be really helpful. I don't know why people don't use him more often...he gives out loads of useful information when asked. And the cat/dog are both so cute.

He never really annoyed me all that much... all he did was help me procrastinate on my assignments, because I'd get bored and sit there and make him do all those crazy tricks of his. Some of them were awesome. Like the tornado.
