Why don't Elves & Dwarfs get along?

I always thought it was because Elves live in the forest/are attuned to nature while dwarves live in mountains and are more about mining the Earth for resources rather then respecting nature. Dwarves don't like forests and horses either, IIRC, and those are pretty big in elf life.

Also, its a convienent non-violent running joke.

Obligatory Tolkien dork answer:

Because they coveted the Nauglamir. This was a fantastic necklace that this powerful elf-dude brought out of heaven when he and the other elf-types had a fit of total insane stupidity and went tromping off to fight a god. Later, he gave it to another elf-dude who decided to have the dwarves mount one of the Silmarils (beautiful gems that ended up causing everybody to go batshit insane and do stupid stuff to claim them) in it. They finished the job, but hey, it was frickin neat-o looking, so they killed Thingol when he came to claim it and ran off with it. Then they had a bunch of nasty fights and stuff with the elves over it, ultimately resulting in Beren putting the smack down on the Lord of Nogrod and taking the foolish trinket back to his wife, who was Teh Hotness.

If the fate of Middle Earth hangs in the balance, how come there are no armies of elves, drawves and hobbits opposing Sauron's forces? It concerns them, even the fleeing elves.

Well elves barely gave a damn by that point and hobbits didn't know anything about what was going on. The dwarves are confusing though... maybe too many of them died in Moria?

I hate Night Elves, the filthy savages. They should stay on their island.

I hear they crap right out in the woods.

If you aren't being sarcastic...

The elves have already been fighting against Morgoth and his minions for eons. Their numbers and energy are mostly spent by the time of the War of the Ring. Very few were left after the end of the first age, and those dwindled over the course of the second and third ages. Factor in ancient mistrust and general isolationism... Anyway, the short answer is there aren't enough of them left, and they're totally burnt out from fightin' all those bad guys for so damn long.

The dwarves are essentially decimated during various wars with orcs before we ever get to the War of the Ring. Like the elves, there aren't many left, they have little cultural ambition, and are very isolationist. However, the dwarves did play more of a factor then is readily apparent (esp. in the movies). In "The Hobbit" the dwarves retake Lonely Mountain and garrison it with troops from their strong settlements to the north. During the War of the Ring, these dwarves maintained a northeastern front against Sauron's forces coming around to descend on Rohan- instead, it is only Saruman who is able to attack Rohan in force. I think it's mentioned in the books, perhaps in an apendix- been a long time since I read them fully.

Hobbits...well, hobbits are just fat. And short.

Yeah, it's not mentioned the movies (except for one lin in RotK EE), but Sauron also sends entire armies to Lorien (Elves) and the Lonely Mountain region (Dwarves and Men), so they do take part in the War. Also, all the elven settlements were under constant attack during the period so they were constantly fighting.
