Why I like the DS

Musashi Wins! said:
this whole weird thing ....is kind of why you feel uncomfortable around Nbabes.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I have good things to say about the DS, but I just can't here. I can't! It's like if all your friends liked animal sex, and after much badgering you finally admitted that, yeah, sheep do look hot sometimes. What kind of mindset am I agreeing with here?! *shudder*

actually i was doing the math wrong. psp has 3.4 times as many pixels in a screen slightly more than 4 times as large.

That's true, electricphase. Still, I found this quote quite amusing:

the GBM has something like over 3 times the pixel density of the PSP.

Ah the calculator!

Eh, I haven't done the calculations yet, but I don't think he's too far off just by looking at the numbers. I don't make a habit of calculating exact pixel densities, so I'll have to check shortly if he doesn't reply.

Lies.
Kirby: Canvas Curse, Ultimate Spiderman, Pokemon Dash, The Sims 2, SD Gundam: G Generation DS, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory... don't work.

I'm too lazy too actually calculate, but here's the formulae:

Pixels per inch (PPI) or pixel density is a measurement of the resolution of a computer display, related to the size of the display in inches and the total number of pixels in the horizontal and vertical directions. This measurement is often referred to as dots per inch, though that measurement more accurately refers to the resolution of a computer printer. PPI may also be used to describe the resolution of an image scanner or digital camera; in this context, it is synonymous with samples per inch.

Typical circa-2000 cathode ray tube computer displays are generally capable of 72 to 130 pixels per inch. For example, a display that is 11 inches wide by 8.5 inches high, capable of a maximum 1024 by 768 pixel resolution, can display about 93 PPI in both the horizontal and vertical directions. This figure is determined by dividing width (or height) of the display area in pixels, by width (or height) of the display area in inches. It is possible for a display's horizontal and vertical PPI measurements to be different. The apparent PPI of a monitor depends upon the screen resolution (that is, number of pixels) in use; a monitor in 800 by 600 mode has a lower PPI than the same monitor at 1024 by 768 mode. The dot pitch of a computer display determines the absolute limit of possible pixel density.

The measure of pixel density is useful for calibrating a monitor with a printer; software can use the PPI measurement to display a document at "actual size" on the screen.

PPI could also broadly describe the resolution, in pixels, of an image to be printed within a specified space. For instance, a 100x100-pixel image that is printed in a 1-inch square could be said to have 100 pixels per inch, regardless of the printer's DPI capability. Used in this way, the measurement is only meaningful when printing an image. Good quality photographs usually require 300 pixels per inch when printed. It has been observed that the human eye can generally not differentiate detail beyond 300 PPI, however this figure is often contested and should be used as a rule of thumb.

but, your whole prescence here at GAF is a gimmick...seriously.
EDIT: fuck, been here for a while and i still get baited. hard to ignore though.

On topic: did i mention ouendan? you're not complete without this game.

so far according to my math GBM has 40000 pixels per sqaure inch while PSP has 16,623 pixels per square inch. GBM has a total screen surface area of .96" sq. (1.2"x.8") with a total pixel count of 38,400 pixels while the PSP has a total screen surface area of 7.854" sq. (3.74" x 2.1") and a total pixel count 130,560. If anyone wants to double check my math feel free as I've had a migrain all day.

the PSP has over triple the pixel count but over 8 times the screen real estate. the GBM has a better pixel density.

And while someone calculates the numbers, I'll tell you why I like DS:

-GBA compatibility
-Brand new Super Mario game!
-Castlevania
-Advance Wars
-Final Fantasy III
-Vandal Hearts (fingers crossed!)
-new Wario game

Castlevania DoS sucks, but I like the DS for other reasons.

1) Advance Wars DS
2) Pheonix Wright
3) Trauma Center
4) Jump Superstars
5) Lost in Blue

All excellent, addictive games.
Soon, two more games will be added to my list of awesome DS games. Their awesomeness will be even more awesome thanks to Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection:

-Animal Crossing WW
- Mario Kart DS

i haven't had cause to do any math in years. this is kind of fun. here's how i figure it:

if i'm applying the pythagorean theorem correctly, then the area of a rectangle is the diagonal squared and divided by two. and you obviously get the number of pixels on a screen by multiplying the vertical resolution by the horizontal resolution.

psp screen area: 9.245 square inches
gb micro screen area: 2 square inches

psp total pixels: 130,560
gbm total pixels: 38,400

psp pixels/sq. in.: ~14,122
gbm pixels/sq. in.: 19,200

You forgot Mario & Luigi: PiT...

come to think of it, i have no clue how to get a screen's area from a diagonal measurement. maybe you can't get a screen's area just from a diagonal measurement. my calculations would only be correct if the psp and gb micro screens were perfectly square. which they aren't. :(

No.

If you haven't been playing the Castlevania series consistently since 1997, then it is an excellent game.

However, if you have, you quickly realize it's the same shit you've been playing for 8 years, and the whole experience is quite forgettable.

The new PS2 game, CoD, isn't that great, but when compared to CV:DoS I find it much more enjoyable. At least it presents us with something that isn't stale as fuck.

EDIT: And yes that new Mario and Luigi game looks great... Though I must admit, I never finished the first one. :(

you are not applying it correctly. 4.3" and 2" are the diagonal measurements. We also know the aspect ratio (also needed for the calculation). the PSP screen is 16:9 and the GBM screen is 3:2. applying the reverse of the pythagorean theorm (where (x*horizontal aspect)^2 + (x*vertical aspect)^2 = diagonal measurement ^2) you arrive at x which you then multiply times the respective horizontal and vertical aspects. you then can multiply true horizontal and vertical widths to come up with surface area.

what?

thanks for the explanation. i thought i could save myself some work by cutting out aspect ratio, but obviously that assumption was no good. i suppose this is why i never did well in math classes. :lol

It's made by Nintendo.
It has all of Nintendo's franchises,
This alone makes it infinitely superior to the competition.
Third Party support has been also excellent.
It is unique and different.
Touching is good.
I <3 DS.

The great part about the DS is that even with the standard A Nintendo games (and some third party gems) like

Super Mario 64
Mario Kart DS
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Nintendogs
Super Mario Bros.
Jump Super Stars
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Final Fantasy III
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Ouendan
Sonic Rush
Magical Vacation
Pokemon Pearl and Diamond
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Zelda DS
Bleach DS (c'mon, online Bleach)

it also has a terrific supporting lineup of B games, ranging from almost A games, to great games for $20.

-Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
-Lost in Blue
-Meteos
-Kirby: Canvas Curse
-Adult Brain Training
-Tony Hawk's American Wasteland
-Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble
-Snowboard Kids DS
-Wario Ware Touched
-That game with 42 real life games just released in Japan
-Elektroplankton
-Super Princess Peach
-Pokemon Dungeon
-Metroid Pinball
-Otona no DS Golf
-Jam with the Band!
-Super Monkey Ball DS
-Dynasty Warriors DS
-Ultimate Brain and Card games (online)
-Slime Mori Mori Dragon Quest 2
-Resident Evil: Deadly Silence

Plus, no need to worry about firmware updates to play an already amazing GBA library.

I like the DS because of all the awesome games. That's pretty much the only reason. But I DO like the touch screen and built-in in wi-fi. I could care less about the second screen.

I'm sadly disappointed with the PSP. My DS gets more love because the PSP isn't getting treated like a Sony system is supposed to be. It's a Playstation, it's supposed to have a LOT more games by now. Oh well. At least the DS has a half a dozen awesome games coming out very soon that I will definitely be buying. The PSP... well.. when does Loco Roco come out?

Released? Yes.

Annouced? No.

Mainly because it has Nintendo franchises on it. And online. Everything else is just icing.

Infected has been reviewed as having infrastructure mode.

Play enough games on the Internet and your personal virus can spread far and wide among other players. You'll even be able to keep track of how far your persona has spread using a handy virus map feature found in the game (it will also keep track of your online stats).

Gamespot Hands On Infected

Mainly because cause i like Nintendo franchises and i've always owned their products and i'm very happy with my 21 DS games and by the end of the year it will be something around 30 lol.

well, I'm not liking the DS too much right now.. just got back from buying the Nintendogs bundle (for the woman), Castlevania, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, and Zoo Keeper........ luckily Zoo Keeper was only $10 at best buy (and single cart multiplay to boot!) damn I just spen too much money. oh, and paid for MKDS in full. can't wait until next tuesday to school your asses in some online MK.

No words yet on Nintendogs. Now this is a lovely piece of software. Not everyone's cup of tea of course, but man. What a well crafted game! It oozes with life and somehow reminded me the first time I got an Internet connection on my computer: this "it's alive!" feeling, you know :)

Sold Mario64 because I didn't like the controls and Trace memory because I finished it and it was still worth good money. No room for the metroid demo in the case :)

Yo what is this? 6 carts in a small tic-tac sized foldable case? Got a bigger pic or something? I might want one of these to carry around in my coat pocket

I don't really give a shit about portable gaming. In fact, i'm just looking for playing the more diverse stuff possible. My DS fullfill it's purpose right. So far i'm playing Advance Wars, Castlevania, Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright = there's no way it's my PS2 or Gamecube games that's for sure!!

And the GBA compatibility is also god blessed.

Speedlink something.Link.

It's pretty neat but I feared for my carts when I put them in first because it's a bit stiff so I had to apply some force. All good now though.

I like the DS because of the Elektroplankton presentation few months ago: "Elektro-plankton.. Who's your Daddy? Nintendo!". Brilliant :-)

I love the sleep function.

I can get sporadic bursts of gaming time in while watching TV, doing laundry, cooking dinner, etc. Just clap that baby closed when something comes up and pick up right where you left off. It's such a convenient feature, you'd think it would have been included in a GameBoy before now.
