Why I liked the N64 :)

EAD did some of their best work on N64. Waverace 64 was an amazing experience for me at the time. Maybe even more so than Mario 64.

Not to mention Majora's Mask is the best Zelda ever.

N64 was great. Some of my personal favorites were

1. Banjo-Kazooie - Best 3d platformer ever
2. Diddy Kong Racing - Best single-player kart racer ever (also >>>>>>>>> MK64)
3. ISS '98 - Played this endlessly with friends
4. Goldeneye - See ISS '98
5. Ocarina of Time
6. Jet Force Gemini - Great music, good challenge
7. Star Fox 64 - "Cocky little freaks!"
8. Mario 64
9. Wave Race 64

and many more...although note how almost every game = Nintendo or Rare, which basically defines the N64.

What I didn't like - Those damn analog sticks kept breaking on me...

four controller ports
I think this is the best answer. N64 rocked in multiplayer, there were so many good 4 player games on the console.

FPS games are still compared to Goldeneye to this day, Wrestling games to No Mercy and while it is a single player game, platformers to mario 64

Best thing about last generation:
N64 games were unique to the N64 and PSX to the PSX. It was great having two consoles and getting totally unique games on both instead of all the multiconsole ports we get now.

Yea, maybe because I was younger back then...but there wasn't arguments about which console was more powerful or whatever. It was game against game. GOLDENEYE IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN METAL GEAR SOLID!!! MARIO KART IS KIDDY TWISTED METAL IS SO COOL!!

Shake shake! Funny game.

Btw, WCW/nWo Revenge has gotta be one of the best games ever, for any format. I played that game a ridiculous amount of time.

Ah yes, lovely thing the N64 was and still is.

Yeah just the Analogstick wasnt built to last forever (=Smash Bros and Mario Party sessions) :/

Thats another point why i'm looking forward to Revolution.

StarFox, Conker, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Blast Corps, Ogre Battle, Sin & Punishment, Mystical Ninja, Mischief Makers, etc.

N64 pwns GamecubeNintendo.

OMG yes I remember this, I also remember how even the most frantic sony fanboys always
wanted to play some goldeneye or pd
:D

I love(d) the N64
+for having all the brilliant Rare games (PD, GE, DK64, BK,BT, JFG etc)
+all the brilliant Nintendogames (SM64, OoT, MM etcetcuswuswusw)
+there are many other reasons^^

its very sad that there are more Aidyn Chronicles and Quest 64 mentions in this thread as justification for the N64 being good than there are mentions of Ogre Battle 64 =(

Agreed, Sin and Punishment is a fantastic game, and you can just get one of those cheap cartridge converters to play it, no mods necessary.

2 Games:

No Mercy
Wave Race

Those two stick out the most to me. I remember staying at a friends house right after he got a N64 and me and his little brother stayed up all night playing Wave Race while he slept. I remember the next morning having a blister on my thumb from the night long Wave Race session. Good times. :)

Mine started with Mario 64 and Wave Race, Turok 1 dominated when it came around, and it ended well with PD, CBFD, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion (under-rated), and JetForce Gemini. The machine in overall playtime was dominated by Wave Race and JFG.

Uhm could you be more specific? I was told that it only works with this adapter:
ppv31.jpg

and a special code (E93D0054 0000003F) and shit.

Actually, I have S&P at home, bought a different adapter but it didnt work. (have PAL-N64)
So the game sits at here for 2 years, unused and gets no love. :[

I have an SFX 64 Universal Game Adapter made by some company called Blaze, might not be so easy to find nowadays I don't know. Works fine with Sin and Punishment, I don't have any other n64 imports so I don't know about other compatibility. I don't have to put in any codes at all.

By the way, Musashi is right modding is really easy, I just never bothered because I didn't need to

EDIT: my bad, I should learn to read, a PAL N64 is a whole different beast, sounds like it's harder to mod. The US/JP N64's are mostly identical other than the tabs, so it's much easier, that passport thing is probably your best bet....

There weren't exactly a plethora of great games on the 64, but I can safely say I had a lot more fun with it than any of the current systems. Although that may say something about how jaded and bored with games I've become. Renting Mario64 for the first time was one of the very greatest times in my gaming life. I just miss that "whoa 3D my mind is blown" era back in 96.

The N64 had some great games, but, in the end, I ran out of things to play. The software droughts were ridiculous on that console. The GC has been much better in terms of support (hard to believe, huh?)

Oh yeah, Paper Mario, OOT and GoldenEye were reason enough to own the console, though.

Sin and Punishment was good, but overall it was a terrible console with an enormous amount of shovelware and suprisingly few quality first-party games.

just thinking about those games makes me nauseus.

oh yeah, and the controller was god-awful.

N64 is the worst console i have ever owned. Very few 3d party games and the ones we got were usually shit, EVERYTHING got delayed, there were huge 1st party game droughts (which seemed even longer than they were because of the 3rd party thing i mentioned)

I really disliked the system.

M64 was not nearly as great as the SNES/NES ones
MK64< SNES Kart
DK64 sucked ass
wasnt a big zelda fan at the time
Paper mario < Mario RPG
No Metroid
No good RPG's

Really they should have just called it the Rare 64. Goldeneye and Banjo pwnt. Though Smash Bros obviously was a great addition to the Nintendo franchise list.

Really its hard to judge the console fairly after the fact. Do any of you remember how INFURIATING the constant delays were?

The delays were really the only problem with the N64. It really didn't have that many games. However the N64 still kicked all amounts of ass. You may not have enjoyed the games you listed, but millions of people throughout the world did. I can honestly say that even though Super Mario Kart's single player mode is still the best, absolutely nothing beat 4 player battle mode in Mario Kart 64. I can't recall how many hundreds of hours I spent playing battle mode on MK64 during my college days. Also: fucking Goldeneye. 7 million people bought that game. It was fucking incredible for its time, both in single player and multiplayer modes. And Mario 64. And Paper Mario >>>>> Super Crappy Mario RPG.. And then there are the import classics like Sin & Punishment. And so forth.

Obviously N64 shouldn't be compared to SNES/PS1/PS2, but it was definately superior to the gamecube in terms of quality games and it'll still be one of the most memorable consoles in history, if you were a hardcore gamer and not just one of those biased console fanboys who only like games from Square or Capcom.

GC has less killer aps than N64 but more good games. There are quality games from every genre on GC and thats why i will always hold GC in higher regard.

I doubted heavily about those 2 back in the Nintendo 64 days.

Anyway Nintendo 64 is still my personal best Console this is why:

1/The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time<The only game i call a piece of "Art"
2/Perfect Dark 64<So much superiour to anything back then and still now.
3/Goldeneye 64<No need to explain this
4/Mario Kart 64<Best and most played offline multiplayer game i ever had
5/Jet Force Gemini<Heavily underrated
6/The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask<Didnt like the 3 days thing very much but still a very good game
7/Mission Impossible 64<Ugh dont ask i was(still am) a huge fan of Mi the Movie
8/Beetle Adventure Racing<fun sp and mp game, too bad i didnt have a mem c
9/Banjo Kazooie 64<No need to explain
10/Super Smash Brothers<together with Mario Kart 64 the best offline mp you can find
11/1080° snowboarding<this is how it should be done
12/Mario Party 2<Best Mario Party game ever

And im sure i have forgotten some.

my favorites are

F-Zero X
Blast Corps
Tetrisphere
Mystical Ninja
Goemons Great Adventure
Mario 64
Pilotwings
Wave Race
Snowboarding Kids
Goldeneye
Banjo Kazooie
Starfox 64
Rush
Killer Instinct Gold
Mario Kart 64
Didding Kong Racing
Doom 64
Zelda TooT
Turok
Mario Party

I was happy with my N64 but the droughts of no new software were not very fun. The joysticks crap out so easily too :(

The only reason I kept my N64 for so long after I was finished with Mario 64 and Star Wars SotE, were Zelda and the AKI wrestling games.

A few of us friends nearly failed our 2nd semester of college due to WCW World Tour and Revenge. We would go play for a little bit during our lunch hour and next thing you know it's 6pm and we're still having battle royals and tag matches. Good times.

I actually spent yesterday playing Starfox 64, No Mercy, and Mario 64 with a friend of mine who's never touched a Nintendo 64 controller in his life. Hardcore Playstation fan and all that.

After about an hour of playtime he stood up and declared 'Wow, the Nintendo 64 really was better than the Playstation!'

I smiled.
