Why is "bitch" allowed on TV?

I always thought it was weird that "God damn it" wasn't allowed on network TV, while, "oh my God" and "damn it" are just fine. Must be a specific worry over certain groups getting offended at blasphemy.

Fixed.

1. Damn, Hell, Ass, Piss
2. Bastard, Bitch, Dick
3. Cock, Shit
4. Fuck, C word (there's no way this is more offensive than fuck, at least in the US)

Racial epithets are sort of in a category of their own. AMC allows the N word, for instance, but not any words from tier 4.

5. Cunt

If we're actually talking TV broadcasts, IMO:

1) Damn, Hell, Ass, Piss
2) Dick, Bastard, Bitch
3) Cock, Shit
4) Racial epithets (see: The Walking Dead Episode 1)
5) Fuck
6) Cunt

As always with these threads, it should be pointed out that anything is legally allowed on non fcc regulated broadcasts (read: cable, not network).

The reason you don't hear all of these words is advertisers, not the government.

The Australian version of this list has "cunt" rated on the same level as "cock" and "shit".

Ass was on a separate tier from damn and hell for a long time. I remember when the Fox network first started up. They had some of the first network shows to use "ass" regularly. It was mildly shocking.

I was banned for using that word as well, pretty damn ridiculous that GAF has banned using that word in any context.

Not that I don't think the banning of such a good word as that is ridiculous, but it has been stated a couple of times that it isn't banned in any context, would imagine it being fine in a thread like this that is actually about swear words. You can also find lots of posts with faggot and so on in them, when actually discussing pejorative terms.

Just curious, but is the c-word normal over there?

It's a great word. It instantly identifies the quality of your character the second it is used.

I don't understand why people care about naughty words. Censorship gives the words being censored more power than they would otherwise have if people just never acted like they cared in the first place.

Because TV (even US TV lol) is less super-sensitive than GAF and doesn't take political correctness to ridiculous extremes by ignoring the context in which the word is being used.

Then there is the n-word which...I don't think I've seen a basic cable show use ever.

I can't believe it took 60 posts before someone brought this up. Everyone wants to jump on the government censorship bandwagon, when it's actually just the sponsors who are prudes (except for over the air network stations, of course).

I'm talking about the word bitch. I can understand the c word being extremely offensive in other countries. But I don't think the word bitch is unanimously offensive (ie: regardless of context) in any country.

I agree. I've always viewed bitch to be a very mild swear word, and I don't think I'm in the minority when I say that.

In short, the government isn't responsible for television censorship (except when they are).

The one I don't get is why "asshole" is censored, but not "ass". Also, the "hole" is the part that's bleeped out.

Cause ass could mean the cute widdle butt, dem nice butt cheeks, or even a silly little donkey.

Asshole is full-on poopchute.
