Why is "bitch" allowed on TV?

Ass refers to jackass, while asshole refers to an unpleasant mental image.

Except not really, it now pretty much just refers to somebody who's rude, unless you're specifically talking about "my asshole" which is instantly obvious by context.

Which is the whole problem with all this shit in the first place. Every single one of these words (asshole, bitch, cunt, fuck) carry so much more meaning and effectively convey thoughts and emotions that far surpass the literal interpretation. So the small bit of linguist in me dies a little when we censor them based on such things.

In short, the government isn't responsible for television censorship (except when they are).

The majority of the supposed contradictions being pointed out in the thread are explained by this distinction. And since there are hundreds of channels and only 4 broadcast channels, it's pretty relevant as a distinction.

Nobody who swears uses the word in the literal sense. If someone called me and asshole and literal meant they thought I was an anus is clearly an idiot, who would be offended by that anyway? Calling someone an asshole but doing it as a means to insult one's character is much more offensive.

Just another reason why banning the c word because it carries a gender specific connotation (in America anyway) is ridiculous.

I have no qualms with your post. I responded to his specifically because I think people should rail against government censorship, regardless of whether it affects 1 channel or 100.

(That said, even if you do just care about practicality, radio censorship is pretty much inseparable from television censorship, and over-the-air radio broadcasts are going to remain common for quite a long time.)

You can't call people bitches or refer to people as bitches, so yea I would consider it banned.
Generally speaking, you're not allowed to insult other posters regardless of the word used.

Profanity usually doesn't bother me (unless people are swearing around kids) but whenever this commercial comes on during prime-time (before 9PM) it makes me a little uncomfortable:

It makes me think back to the time I was quoting something I heard on TV as a kid that included the word "bastard" and my Mom completely went off on me for swearing.
I'd imagine parents hearing their kids chanting "I ain't no god-damned son of a bitch" probably wouldn't be too happy either...

Maybe it's just me, but 99% of the time I take the b-word as meaning "jerk". I never thought of it as demeaning to women before it was banned here.

I went to England to visit family last year, about the same time the In-Betweeners movie came out, so I got to see EVERY episode shown on TV. I wish our censors were more like their's. That show is hilarious, nothing was bleeped out, hell, they even showed a man's testicle, but it showed after 9, and I didn't think any of it was that bad.

Because its about context, just because you say "b***"out loud doesnt mean you are an evil sexist asshole, I dont dare to say the B-word in certain threads because theres a chance ill get banned.

Moral absolutism is a bi-

Because the FCC sucks.

Everlast's what it's like is severly edited now, I dont recall it ever being edited before.

Off the top of my head: whore, chrome 45, shit, Cutting off his balls, are all bleeped
. Half the damn song is bleeped out, it's like what's the point?

Tier 1 swears on network, more so at night. Tier 2 swears on basic cable and sometimes tier 3 swears late at night. Tier 3 almost exclusively on premium, so it gets far less exposure. They're mostly adult shows, so it doesn't matter as much, I guess.

Well he's not actually calling someone it. We all know what the word is, no point in censoring it.

I called a fictitious character a cunt as a joke.

"Tom Nook needs be in the next smash brothers, i want to smash the shit outta the evil capitalist cunt."

Ban worthy?

I swear they censored retard and retarded on It's Always Sunny. But they can say shit... Makes no sense to me.

Pretty sure they didn't censor retarded. There's a whole episode called "Sweet Dee's Dating a Retarded Person", and they use the word like ten times that episode.

I used it when describing the UK government and i got a warning in my PM's.

Personally i don't find any swear word more or less offensive than any other, they are just words.

I was actually surprised at how some people found the C word far more offensive than Fuck or Shit. Those two were the big No Nos when I was little. I knew the C word was a cuss word but I used to consider them on the same level as bitch, dick and bastard.

Also, piss is incredibly tame by today's standards. No different to hearing ass or crap. I used to remember when ass was censored on music videos. Ha!

for everyone saying 'damn', i think the censored word is usually "god", not "damn", leading to a "beepdamn" situation.

i don't know about bitch. not a severe enough curse word maybe, more an aggressive verbal punch, "you stupid punk!" type.
edit: i'm in america for reference

It's all over the place in "black comedies." Comedy Central and Adult Swim get away with it.

Also, Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO has said the n-word at least 2-3 times and he's white. That was a little shocking when I first saw it. Not because it was offensive (it wasn't) but because of the fact that he even said it at all. It's very uncommon to hear white people say that on TV no matter the context. Well unless it's a racist context of course.

I probably should've checked if my own country - which is quite fond of censorship - handles this before making fun of other people, but eh. :p I honestly have no idea how local TV handles this, I don't really watch it.

Why aren't the two C words on the same tier?

Also afaik, in AMC shows there are usually a couple shits per season with one fuck that is bleeped out on the actual broadcast and then back in for the DVD (At least this is how it is with Mad Men.)

Level's Of Curse Words.(IMO)

1. Damn, Hell, Ass, Dick
2. Bastard, Bitch, Twat
3. Shit, Fuck, Cunt

That's the way I see it anyway. Curse words are not all equal.

1. Damn, Hell, Ass, Dick
2. Bastard, Bitch
3. Piss, Cock, Shit
4. Fuck
5. Cunt
6. Racial epithets

No no no no no no no

1. Damn, Hell, Bastard(in between 1-2)
2. Ass, Piss
3. Bitch, Dick(in between 3-4)
4. Shit, Cock, Twat
5. Cunt
6. Fuck

Racial epithets are between 2-5 depending on the specific epithet.

Why do the advertisers in the US not allow nudity/swearing? Yet in most other countries the advertisers don't mind?

And why aren't US advertisers against violence?
