Why is Florence + The Machine so good?

I really liked Lungs but was never too big on Ceremonials... Wasn't enough variety in the production on that one, like it was just constantly trying to be BIG and the songs suffered for it. They sound much better live, though.

My favorite thing was seeing her play in a park in Vancouver. During "Rabbit Heart" she urged the crowd to take the person they loved and hoist them up onto their shoulders for the chorus ("...raise it up, raise it up"). It caught me off guard when my friend turned to me with a big grin on his face and told me to hop on. ;__; Was pretty awesome.

Jessie Ware is pretty great, not a fan of the reverb filter on her voice in Wildest Moments though. Imagine it was us seems like a cool throwback style-wise, but as far as her showcasing her voice I'm not really hearing it.

My favorite Jessie Ware song is "Something Inside." Check that one out. If that doesn't move you a bit, then, well, I've got nothing.

THERE we go.

Im not gonna let you guys come for the good sis Koodo's taste.
The worst is you just KNOW the "vocalists of yore" are always in reference to sirens like Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle, whom had impeccable vocal technique to accompany their emotive singing.

Florence is the modern breed of loud noise that has a sizeable marketing budget backing her up to fool gullible listeners into believing the croaking that comes out of her throat is anything above trash. She truly is the Christina Aguilera of the 2010s, and I suppose her voice will meet the same fate after years of abuse.

I'm not sure how much cognitive dissonance is required to suppress her terrible singing, the subtle layers of white supremacy, and that uneven discography.

I think you've dethroned yourself twice in this thread for worst post on a forum ever.

Between Two Lungs

^^^ I mean listen to this trash. I just vomited up shit when I heard how throaty it was.

I love Florence + The Machine, granted my first exposure to Florence was Dogs Days Are Over but both Albums are amazing. I really like My Boy Builds Coffins off of Lungs but I can't pick a favorite.

I know Florence + The Machine has gotten a lot more exposure with songs being featured on movie soundtracks and Seven Devils for Game of Thrones season 2 promos. I don't get why some people say they are too mainstream. Oh well :(

Right. There are tons of examples of a more restrained in her discography. It's not all throaty belting

This is exactly how I feel about Florence's albums. Something about her big vocals paired well with some of the almost barebones tracks on Lungs, and in certain moods I actually prefer the demo version of What The Water Gave Me for this reason.

I don't particularly like her stuff live, either. SHE'S great, but I feel like something gets lost in the way they try to strip down the big production of a lot of her stuff for a live performance.

Lungs is good but as a cohesive album? LOL GTFO. Both are good, but Ceremonials is where bitches get purged of demons.

I always turn to Lungs' Dog Days Are Over though for a good feel time.

Awful. No resonance, little forward placement with a throaty quality, almost no squillo, slightly under the pitch, with a lot of tension in her voice and a ridiculous tremolo.

But because she's loud and her name isn't Christina, she gets a pass.

Don't listen to them, none of their pop starlets can match Florence or Fiona or Regina. If based on vocal ability alone then the pop music they adore would be dead and gone.

Oh, those little plagiarizing monsters are right, even if their faves are just as bad or worse.

Do not care how lacking her voice could be when compared to whoever we want to when SHE is the singer behind amazing songs that are on Ceremonials/Lungs.

Simple as that. I am pretty sure that if 90's Tori Amos were to sing these exact same songs, it might be considered better or whatever, but this is not the case :P

Florence Welch is pretty good yeah, though I agree that she peaked with Lungs. Ceremonials, while okay, has IMO far less memorable songs. That said, Seven Devils is one of my favorite Florence + the Machine songs, so it's not all bad.

My wife got into her, but I was suspicious. A few songs caught my ear. I surprised my wife by taking her to a gig and became a convert. Ms. Welch had studied the area and the venue and had perceptive things to say about both. Also, I really like a lot of her lyrics.

Vocal technique might matter more to me if we weren't talking about singing in the ugly, misshapen, lumpy English language. (I have a hard time listening to even Britten etc. because of how ridiculous English sounds when sung with real technique.) But then, it might not.

Florence strikes me as a less kooky and musically adventurous Kate Bush.
Florence wishes she could be on the level of Kate Bush. Then again, we can give it time.

While I don't mind Florence + The Machine, it's not something I dedicate my listening to. Not really sold in the vocal style at all. I will say that the potential for great things is there, but hearing that Calvin Harris song makes me feel like Florence is on the verge of truly selling out.

I'm sorry, that's just the vibe I get when an artist suddenly goes into "catchy" dance-pop territory.

You mean bad?

shoo

The calvin harris song is exactly that, a calvin harris song. Not representative of her own material at all. She wanted him to remix one of her songs, and he wanted her vocals on one of his tracks in return.

God forbid she does something different when in between albums.

She turned me on to Jessie Ware, and Jessie is a goddess. Her taste is almost impeccable.

err... your good sis is a Britney stan of the highest order, and ha new fave in Britney's stead is Lady Gaga. Let that sink in.

Don't mention the imminently-nodule-infested banshee in the same sentence as High Priestess Bush. The only thing they have in common is questionable racist imagery in their music videos.

What happened to your prediction of Lotus being Xtincta's most successful era? It's time to let go.
