Why is Florence + The Machine so good?

It really is a great act. Her voice is incredibly powerful, and the arrangements on their albums are fantastic. I'm not into pop music at all and Lungs and Ceremonials have both blown me away.

They're incredible when bombastic--Drumming Song, Breath of Life, that new track off of the Gatsby OST, etc, etc...

On the other hand, they're no good when doing anything else.

I hate her. I want my pop singer voices to be indistinguishable from each other.

The primary reason I like her so much is because I can recognize her voice. Like human beings are supposed to.

Saw her live last October and it was a good show. Couldn't give a shit about the technical correctness of her singing because it all sounds good to me.

Her voice is incredibly powerful.
I'd deem it as "over-singing" myself. I guess that's why she caught on slightly with the mainstream though, people love when vocalists overdo it. As seen in other indie acts like Fun (and its sister dot) and ridiculously popular acts like Adele.

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what makes an amazing voice. People have already mentioned Kate Bush though and that makes a pretty good gauge, to me. Not too much "overdoing it" there; just pure talent and beauty with a few twists thrown in. Never really comes off as trying too hard.

That said, I'm certainly not the type that requires an amazing voice in my music. In fact, I'm more likely to enjoy someone who sings with a voice that "grows on you."

No, wrong. Power is not the same as overdoing it. Or do you think Aretha overdid it as well?

I don't particularly consider what I've heard from Florence to be "powerful." But then again, that's a tough label to apply to anything. What kind of music or vocals truly have power?

Sounds to me more like she has vocal quirks that work to the advantage of her style. Same with Adele.

RTTP, but I just loaded up Lungs onto my Ipod this past week and have been blown away at how great it is. From top to bottom every song is pretty great unto it's own right.

It's been quite awhile since I heard an album so thoroughly above average. You're usually lucky to get half the songs that are worth your time.

Have you heard Ceremonials, yet? It destroys Lungs.

lungs is probably the most overproduced album I've ever listened. they tried to make everything sound big and the result is that is everything sounds fake. then you add her voice, always over the top, always trying to push "emotions" in your face. it's a shame.

I'm a huge fan of Florence and the Machine. One of the few acts today with a sizable audience doing anything worth respecting. Not that their compositions are particularly complicated or something, but Florence sings very well and she/they write for her voice.

People describe her voice as powerful because it's fat and relatively deep for a woman's voice and it's really, really loud.

Don't be ridiculous. Ceremonials is several grades below lungs.

I like them both, but yeah, I like Lungs better :/

Ceremonials is full of the same boring song re-written several times.

Yeah . . . I had to force myself through Ceremonials. Lungs was instant love though.

I think its because, for whatever reason, the variety on Lungs really works to its benefit.

Which might be why I only really like a handful of songs off of it, while I like most of the ones on Lungs.

Ceremonials <3

What The Water Gave Me <3 <3 <3

Well looks like Lungs is the clear winner. :P

Do we know if we're getting another album anytime soon?

They have a few good songs but Florence's caterwauling and banshee howls make the rest unbearable. Sometimes it sounds as if she's going off key.

Wait, so what do you all think of "Breath of Life"?

Thought it was an epic song. It's my ringtone.

Fucking epic song. I saw her last year at a festival and she actually played it, which totally caught me off guard. She also played the album version of Spectrum, and then at the end of it transitioned into Calvin Harris' remix of it, which was also fucking amazing.

Seen them 4 times, twice in a concert hall environment, twice at festivals. They are so perfect for festivals. Love love love them.

I like Ceremonials more than Lungs just because of Spectrum, Lover to Lover, and Strangeness and Charm. Both are absolutely in my top albums of all time though. They're both absolutely incredible.

We should be besties.

Personally, Seven Devils, Only If for a Night, All This and Heaven Too do it for me every time.

We should be besties.

Yes, yes we should.

I'm gonna go listen to Ceremonials right now.
