Why is Pokemon so popular? Opinions needed.

Guys there IS a real Pokemon console RPG coming out soon. Remember? It's going to be like the GBA/GBC/GB titles, not the silly spin-off trash that has been occurring. So now we won't have to wonder why they haven't done it before - because here it comes. ;)

Game Freak has said very authoritatively why they haven't done it before. I'm more interested in what Nintendo offered to make it happen now.

I think maybe Nintendo saw the success of Pokemon as a huge jackpot and didn't want to perhaps "force" Pokefans to have to buy one of their consoles to get into the craze.

Other than that I have no idea why they wouldn't have at least tried that before.

I copied over the key interview bits in past Pokemon threads, but what it basically came down to is that Game Freak feels that doing a full blown Pokemon RPG imitation destroys the freeform community aspects of the GB/GBA game while taking advantage of none of the home console's strengths. So while they seemed very interested in making a unique GC Pokemon, they sounded completely uninterested in just hauling the core series over.

The questions that come to mind as a result:

a. Why didn't another Nintendo studio try it, then? (well, I wouldn't be hopeful given previous efforts)
b. What made them change their mind? (Satoshi Tajiri doesn't need moneyhats)
c. Why the hell even try at this point when a much more network friendly console is in the pipeline?

it's popular because it has all the elements that were popular as a kid

1. Panini football sticker collecting
2. Top Trumps

Coupled with the following bonuses :
3. Beating people or having something they don't
4. Competition and interaction with other kids
5. Physical ability independent
6. Not hard to do - it takes time more than a massive amount of skill*

* yes, i know this isn't true once you start getting really good.

It's genius.

Could you imagine what school would have been like for us "olds" if all the kids had Pokemon? It would have been insane.

And for the same reasons, this is why the GC version will not be as popular.

when I was in middle school (1998 and on).

You were in middle school in 1998? Wow now I feel old. :P

Well all the console Pokemon games were just Pokemon supplements, not really meant to replace the actual Pokemon games, right?

Good to see there can still be some normal discussions on the board. :D How many versions of Pokemon did most of you guys play through? Has it become stale for you yet?

I played about 70% through the originals before I got distracted and moved on. I probably would've finished them if the pacing was a little faster. I completed the main quest of the next ones (Gold/Silver -- best in the series thus far IMO), but didn't play too far into the second half. I skipped Ruby/Sapphire entirely (was pretty burned out by this point), but I came back for the remakes (LeafGreen/FireRed) and spent like 70 hours with them. I'll probably play Emerald at some point, though I feel no immediate need right now. They need to space out the releases a little more IMO.

I played through and beat alot multiple times.

R/B/Y/G/S/C/R/S/Colo/Fr/Lg & soon E. Not to mention Snap, Pinball, Pinball R/S, Channel, Sta, and Sta2.

You skipped R/S to play those retrashes? For shame! Fr/Lg weren't only a downgrade from R/S but they were less fun then the originals.
