Why is prepping for coronavirus being mocked?

Last night I went to a 'the office' trivia night at one of the local breweries. Place was packed. No masks. Had a great time.

We were in first place at half time... Alas, did not win overall.

This means they have a large excess of potatos and they store them in their root celler with any family member who wants being able to take a few buckets if needed. Aswell as preserving other foods as well as smoking meats.

I have stocked up on canned food, smoked meats and we have an additional freezer usually filled with meat that i have also put more in than usual

It's even worse that i see for the foreigners im friends with on facebook, basically all UK and Ireland people are posting about how dumb people who prep are.

But why is it not better to be prepared and not need it than need it and not be prepared, i really dont understand.

I think people are mocking the ways that people are prepping rather than the actual act of prepping.

I don't for example really understand why people are picking up massive amounts of toilet paper?
Maybe thinking that if they catch this they will need it for blowing their nose etc?

People seem to not understand the virus, how it will spread and what is going to happen when it does spread.

I'd have to imagine in a situation like this the chances of starving to death or dying of thirst would be virtually zero in developed countries.

There are lots of misinformation in here. You may not have to be scared but also don't be apathetic. Preparing for natural disasters is not "extremely silly". it is silly to do it last minute.



Yes Its symptoms are like the flu. (dry cough, fever, GI tract, achy muscles, fatigue)
but other than that It is closer to SARS or MERS. It is highly contagious.

100k sample size (estimate of cases globally)

80% will get mild illness
15% need medical attention
5% need ICU

20% of those 100k are asymptomatic and just carry the virus. It is spread way before the symptoms are shown. What we see today is delayed by a week or more of where the virus has actually spread.

If a lot of people are infected at the same time No healthcare system is able to cope with that. A lot more people could die.

This isn't something that will just go away. It will have to be dealt with at some point. If not now it will come back later.

No thing these governments are doing talking like they are doing something are not being proactive and not containing it at all. It is spreading rapidly.

Going out and buying groceries is a good idea to be well stocked and stop going out for a while.
 
I get that stocking up on toilet paper first isn't very smart but if you are stocking up on everything then why not?

The people just dismissing all stockpiling is just silly.

We currently have about 5 or 6 weeks worth of food stored in our basement.

It's not a flu in more ways than one. For example, influenza causes upper respiratory tract infections, SARS-CoV-2 causes lower respiratory tract infections. Pneumonia from flu is typically bacterial pneumonia, whereas SARS-CoV-2 directly causes viral pneumonia and at much higher rates. Fever and muscle aches are common symptoms of many viral infections (because they're caused by the immune response), look up the symptoms of HIV, which is also not a flu btw.

I don't think it's as serious as some people make it out to be, but it doesn't hurt to prepare for the worst. Right now a lot of companies are asking their employees to work from home and if cities/states shutdown transportation then some people are going to be straight up fucked. We're self reliant and have a good supply of food/water to last us about a year with three full meals for everyone in our house - but that's just because we stockpiled on food for emergencies and to save on money. It's much easier to go down into our basement and grab a jar of tomatoes that you pressure sealed than to run to the store. It's like we have our own mini grocery store down there! :)

I wouldn't say I'm mocking them exactly, but I'm gonna poke a bit of fun at the jerks that bought 7 30packs of bottled water despite their water supply being plenty safe (and toilet paper because you don't need a two year supply because of a virus that won't kill you unless your immune system is weak/compromised).

My water at home is from a well and currently isn't safe for anything but cleaning with because of land contamination from new housing developments up the street, I couldn't get my monthly 30 pack or even a few gallons of water to stay properly hydrated, I had to crawl though the shelving to get a 12 pack of the dinky bottles.

It's mainly because the people who are 'prepping' are completely illprepared, have no plan other than to buy all the bread or water or TP in the store, and make every rational persons lives a misery - and on top of that they get to gloat about how they were right when they and their ilk artificially cause the shortages that they irrationally predicted.
Being prepared is wise, 'prepping' is nearly always dumb knee jerk reactions.
 
Wouldn't say that I'm making fun of them but I do roll my eyes when I see the same people you basically have to beg to go get their free flu shots every year now panicking and making irrational purchases....... because of what's basically a type of flu
 
Because the vast majority of the people "prepping" are going overboard and fucking up supplies for everyone else.. is like the mad dash to the single exit during a fire
 
THEY say hypertension is something a lot of the dead from Corona have in common. I have hypertension, but keep my BP around 130/85 using medication. If I'm keeping it under control, does that reduce my risk or am I just fucked because I have it?
 
Because people panic buying over a more infectious version of the flu are fucking retarded idiots who got caught up in all the bullshit freakout news over reporting on the virus as a way to get attention and money.

Shit at work we have a online module we have to take for coronavirus and print out the certificate and you know what? It took like 3 minutes to take a d that fucking company probably sold us the online course for a couple thousand dollars. We our company paid for a 180 second test on the fucking flu.

If people are going to hit the panic button over this then this country is in serious fucking trouble when a real problem comes along.

There is pretty much no chance that countries will collapse and there will be no food and drinking water for months on end. China is getting through it slowly. The worst case scenario is if there is a coronavirus lock down AND a massive natural disaster like an earthquake.

The best way to prepare yourself isn't to hoard items. It's wash your hands often and thoroughly.

Mentioned it in the other thread, but had to buy toilet paper today as I was running out.

The people in front and behind me both had 12-packs. It felt like I was being lumped in with these idiots.

You don't need 1000 hand sanitizers and 200 toilet paper rolls to survive a quarantine.

I bought a few extra cans of food and an extra jug of my normal water. No one is mocking me. If I bought pallets of soup and a mountain of toilet paper, I would deserve to be mocked.

OP grew up in post soviet Europe, lived through the food shortages, so i can understand the sentiment

personally, i grew up in the USA. never had shortages of anything other than gasoline for a few days in 2005. in my experience during crisis the government tells us to buy more things. after 9/11 there were always things on TV, local news broadcasts, saying to stock up in case of terrorist attack, to get duct tape, stockpile food, etc. all that paranoia helped create the modern prepper movement. THOSE PEOPLE ARE RIDICULED by mainstream media. prepping itself is ridiculed. at least in our culture.

we didn't really need any of that stuff, it turned out. it was just W wanting to juice the economy during a time when people were feeling skittish. what were we gonna do with the duct tape against terrorists? lol who knows
 
Because they want you infected to spread it if not die. It's population control. I'm not against the idea in the theory, but it's pretty fucked up to target the people that payed into the system for 40, 50 years.

I get the water hoarding, if you catch it and it's the same symptoms as the flu, it's fucking hard work getting out of bed & going downstairs to the kitchen to get a drink of water ( at least it was with the regular flu for me) so being able to have the small plastic bottles of water in your room nearby your bed is handy especially if you live alone, it's not a necessity but it helps. You probably don't need pallets of it though.

Toilet Paper though I have no idea does it give you diarrhoea ?

When the world ends, scavengers will need to find stockpiles to survive so either way the prepper pantries will not be wasted.
 
I think it is logical to make sure you have at least 5 days worth of tinned/dried foods stocked up.
All of Italy is in quarantine and 700 million people in China are....

So because there's some ultra flu bug going around killing a couple people here and there in USA and Canada, it means everyone should stock up with 3 years of toilet paper?

So the plan is to come home from work (assuming these people even work), and stay home forever for 3 years?
 
The people in Wuhan are still allowed to buy food. It's very strict, but they're not actually starving.




Same deal in Italy. Restaurants are given rules to close a little more earlier and for customers to spread themselves out, but shopping isn't actually banned at the moment.

It's a self defense mechanism. If they mock you and belittle the situation they can pretend to fear the virus less. If you're over 60 this virus is a killer and you should be afraid.

Why tinned and dried food? Why would the power go out? I have at least a week of food in the freezer.
 
I think people are overreacting to a degree definitely and I personally don't feel hoarding or masks are necessary right now in most locations.

Plus I have a lot of other personal worries that have me on edge right now. So the Covid-19 is the least of my concerns.

Realistically all you need to stockpile is 14 days worth of stuff in case you get quarantined.

Everyone rushing to horde 5 years worth of toilet paper is just going overboard. When the virus doesnt even have the runs as a symptom. My only concern is that when I legitimately need to get toilet paper it will be impossible to find, but hopefully the TP mongers will be "stockpiled" enough soon.
