Tenjho Tenge Manga Heavily Edited

posted on 2005-03-03 13:28:43
source: Listerx

32 edits made, mostly of sexual natureListerX reports that CMX's recent release of Tenjho Tenge was heavily edited.

For the most part these edits focused on covering up or removing nudity, fanservice, and sexual inuendo, although there were also some edits in other categories.

Of 32 edits, 26 were visual and only 6 edits were made to dialogue.

Typical edits include the cropping of images to hide cleavage or panty shots, the addition of extra clothing to hide breasts and the addition of placement change of sound effects to hide similar content.

Omake from the end of the manga were also missing.

A detailed, page-by-page list of edits is available at ListerX.

What's the point of licensing a fanservice-heavy manga if you're going to take away the fanservice? Tenjou Tenge is preety much toilet paper without fanservice... so what's the point?!!

But the curiousity has gotten to me so I'm 'getting' it now. :D

Here's one of the comment who posted it...

Yeah I knew when this got picked up that it'd be butchered. Saw this story earlier today and just had to chuckle.. it's sad really.

I'm more mad about jojo. I wanted to read that....
haha what did they do to jojo? Skip past the first arcs or something? 80+ volumes is a pretty daunting release after all :lol

if thats the case, too bad, the early jojo arcs were pretty good :)

Don't bother... unless you can find the original scanlations. If you buy the manga, you're just gonna hurt yourself with its trashiness and badly edited over fanservice. It's like buying a manga, and getting a complementary punch in the nutsack.

apparently no part 1 and no part 2.
obligatory censorship
some name changes...

Wait, Jojo as in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure?!

As for Tenjo Tenge - DC is just cashing in on the "manga" fad with their CMX line.

You take out the titties and blowjobs and TT is another interchangeable shonen fighting manga.

Who will sign my non-existent on-line petition urging Oh! Great to go back to drawing pr0n; which is what he was put on this Earth to do!?

Jonny can just buy the Japanese tankoubons and laugh at us cause he gets the original and spends 1/3rd the price or so! It's not going to an Eisner Award or something, but you can't deny that it's fun to read. :D

OH NOES THEY EDITED PANTIES SHOTS OF CARTOON CHARACTERS BENDING OVER THIS IS A SCANDAL!!!!!!!!!!

The point of the complaining being that the panty shots et al are the only reason to read TT. The "plot" is absolute garbage

Minor edits are one thing. But bringing over a softcore porn manga and drawing clothes on everybody is the stupidest shit I've ever heard of.

I pretty much expected this, since the handful of people that played the Capcom fighter would only really be familiar with Part 3 stuff... in fact if they do anything past Part 3 it'd probably only be Part 5 (though the window to try and use that to help the (awful) PS2 game come out is gone).

Where are there more details about the changes and when they're coming out, etc?

By the way, the editor of Jojo is a friend of mine who is one of the biggest Jojo fans on the goddamned planet. So rest assured that the series is in the hands of somebody who really cares.

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
Who is publishing Tenjou Tenge over here, and why have they not heard of putting "Mature-- for ages 16+" on the cover? :p

Let me know because I want to e-mail them to explain that I will not be purchasing manga from them if they go and censor it for no reason whatsoever.

Just do what Tokyo Pop does with the Battle Royale manga or what Viz does with books like Tough...put a "mature" label on the cover and sell the book shrinkwrapped if some panties/blood/titty is in the content.

so tenjou tenge manga was licsenced and censored ?

You know, while I was in japan last august I bought a copy of Ultra Jump Hyper age magazine and well... even for japan it seems like comics meant for 16+ audience. Maybe at some point they'll release an uncensored version ? I mean the newest printing of ghost in the shell has the pointless orgy sequence left intact... although it took 8 years...

It wouldn't look so bad if it weren't for the fact that CMX's ad copy always talks about how their stuff is "pure manga -- 100% the way the original Japanese creators want you to see it. In English!" and so on.

I don't know if Tenjo's author wants to keep English speakers away from his panty shots, but who knows.

I seriously doubt that OG approved the edits since 1)the violence and sexual themes are pretty much all of what the comic is, and 2) if he's looking for bucks in the lucrative US market, why would he hurt his own product by releasing an edited version that no one will buy?

Methinks DC is still of the opinion that most manga readers are still DBZ-obsessed kids and are treating them appropriately without looking at what is reality. Hell, in their own mainstream books there's tons of exploding people and exposed camel toes

I've never been able to understand why they edit manga like this. Anime is one thing, because that stuff is syndicated and shown on public television (which has showing standards). Manga on the other hand is sold in stores and unless the subject matter is Pokemon or something, then the intended audience is likely teenagers and older. If that's the case, then why even bother editig out pantie shots and nudity when most teenagers are old enough to see movies with the real thing? This just makes me wonder what exactly these companies are thinking when they buy the rights to these series, because they're obviously not thinking of what the audience is intended to be but what they'd like it to be; which makes you wonder about their choices to begin with.

"We have worked closely with the author and orginal publisher to prepare the American edition according to Oh! great's wishes. The author approved limited revisions in order to make his work more accessible to a wider American audience."

A similar thing happened to Del Ray's release of Ken Akamatsu's Mahou Sensei Negima manga.
