Why the hate for Phil Spencer?

He admitted that Microsoft leadership wanted to shut down the entire Xbox division after the failed launch of the Xbox One decimated the platform. Yet, he fought for the brand, advocating for Game Pass and convincing Microsoft to invest $80 billion into the division. Whatever doubts the company had, his efforts ensured they remained committed to Xbox for the long term.

All the positives Xbox has had over the decade have come from his initiatives, while the problems -- primarily the loss console sales to the PS4 -- came from decisions made by his predecessors.

So is there any real justification for the continuous hate he gets?

I personally dislike anyone that isn't competitive. Currently, shit applies to Sony as well.

Fucking hate it when they're pollitically correct, happy go lucky and flaccid af.

MS and Sony were great during the 6th and 7th gen. This is what i want to see.

I don't really know much about Phil Spencer, but I like game pass. Mostly I like that I get it for 50% off, though. I know most people here hate the service, and I won't argue whether it's good or bad for the industry (probably bad?), but I sure enjoy playing all of the newly released games for super cheap.

That's not how it works when you've been there over 10 years. You can't seriously say everything bad that's happened over the last 10 years since been CEO are Mattrick's fault.

Also, people hate Phil because he used to present himself as "one of us", parading around in gaming themed shirts, etc. Then he started making misleading statements at best and straight up lies at worse. After Xbox lost to Playstation he started talking about how exclusivity is bad and then acquired Zenimax and made a bunch of multiplatform games in development Xbox exclusives (pretty sure most of those are on PS now).

We found out during the ABK shitshow that he made the call to make those games exclusive by himself, surprising other executives at Xbox and Zenimax at the time.

There's a reason the "don't believe his lies", and "Lies of P" memes exist.

No one should hate Phil, but this is what happens when someone is seen as the saviour of a thing and then fucks it up.

Would've been better off dead, and IPs sold off to better hands.

Imagine id getting hands on Halo.

This dude helped insure Halo is dead. Gears probably too. And made sure id never buy a Xbox ever again.

Thanks for gamepass I guess but fuck you Phil.

Besides completely ruining Xbox with a near limitless money to work with? How about 90% of the stuff he's ever told the public eventually gets proven to have been completely lies.

That's a fair comment, but the failure of the Xbox surely is more about the appeal of the PlayStation than it is the 'not realising Redfall was bad'...
I agree that it's not easy to fight against PlayStation in this market, but Xbox's numbers are far behind, and it's even worse if you consider that Sony has left a lot to be desired in this generation, so I still think that Phil Spencer is responsible for the poor results in hardware, even when compared to the previous generation of Xbox itself.

The bare minimum was rescue the brand after Don Mattrick nearly killed it. But he's a CEO being paid millions of dollars, you need to be doing something over and above just keeping the brand alive after 12yrs. You need to be kicking arse and taking names at this point and barely a buttock has been grazed. Unless we're talking of all the studios he's ran through.

Pretty much everything he's tried has fallen flat and he continues to make promises only to go back on them or fall short. Your place at the top of a company (and the compensation you receive) should be based on results and the only results MS have in this space are by way of them opening up the cheque book to buy their way out. It's not apparent that anything good they have going on is the result of Xbox leadership making good moves or decisions.

You can argue buying Activision is a good business decision but then I think most of us could work that one out too. Ultimately he -- and seemingly much of the leadership -- don't really bring much of anything to the table. You could probably pick some rando off the street and it'd be a coin toss as to whether they'd do mildly better or mildly worse. "Cream of the crop" should be in the job requirements to lead a company, not "could do worse"..

'Why the hate for Neil Cuckmen?'
'Why the hate for Hermen?'
'Why the hate for Jim Ryan?'

You guys should search on the Internet more often.

3rd place loser who instead of being humble and going back to basics, genuinely tries to buy out the whole industry because he is richer than the other competitors, and then give it away it for almost free to gain respect. And still fails.

He proved MS leadership right

Poor Phil… nothing was his fault. When he was GM of Games Studios nothing, including games output, was his fault, when he became head of Xbox as a whole nothing was his fault, and years and billions spent on the business later nothing is his fault still.

Stuff like this makes you wonder if there's legitimately indoctrinated fans of simply paid people to temper the messaging.

The question answers itself. If any company had as many layoffs and studio shutdowns while spending like a trustfund kid, that person would be removed with the results they've achieved under Phillip Mortimer Bartholemule Spender.

I don't hate him, but there's no question that XBox fans are generally not happy with the job that he's done since taking over as head of XBox.
