Why the MGS/Kojima trailer love?

Kojima -- Michael Bay of the gaming industry. Discuss

Except Kojima is critically acclaimed in his industry while Micheal Bay is not, this is as abitary is you can get for a comparision.

If you talk about action pumped trailers, sure you might have a point as also Kojima and Bay both worked with composer Harry Gregson Williams who makes kickass themes.

Certainly the impetus is on you to explain that statement. Certainly it does not suffice to make a comparison with absolutely nothing to back it up and than have other people argue your point for you. I for one don't think Kojima is anything like Michael Bay. He puts a lot of time and effort in making exceptional games that seem to abide by his vision and not the standard set by the rest of the industry. I think this is why his games provoke such a strong response in people, because expectations and reality are often very different. Michael Bayu on the other hand produces mindless, explosion filled schwill that offers liitle or nothing that differs from the rest the Hollywood big budget action movies.

I don't think MGS3's trailer was too bad (don't remember it much), but the first two? OMGWTF? You think it's a case of people not 'getting it'? People only like the first two trailers because of their movie-like production values. They're as bad as any summer blockbuster trailer or illogical anime. I've only played the first MGS, but the story is just terrible (I will gladly explain if anyone is interested). Indeed there is style in some of the characters, but they nevertheless remain shallow and hackneyed.

Compare them to movies. They don't hold up at all. I supposed it's nice that someone in videogames wants to be a movie director and is bringing that style to games, but there's nothing unique or meaningful to his storytelling. In anime and videogames, you often get lots of character, nothing else.

That said, this thread was obviously a mistake. It should be obvious to anyone why people like this stuff. That's why movie studios make trailers the way they do. Most people feed right into it. I'm sorry, but it's low art.

I think you are looking at this from the wrong perspective...

Take another look at the original MGS2 trailer. It is not presented or directed like any movie trailer I've seen. That was not its intent, even if it was clearly inspired by films. It is a demonstration of gameplay in a cinematic fashion. A series of potential gameplay situations presented to the audience in an entertaining fashion. Movie trailers are entirely different...

Oh, and would you be so kind as to list your favorite films?

And will you assclowns lose the beret and stop being pretentious critics all the time?
THIS I agree with. Some people seem to have such a difficult time simply letting go and having fun with a crazy plot.

Kojima doesn't want to be a movie director. He's just a really big film fan, and enjoys movie-style presentation in his games. And will you assclowns lose the beret and stop being pretentious critics all the time? I love Kojima's over-the-top political intrigue. I never expect Citizen Kane when playing a video game.

Because Kojima makes amazing trailers for his games, (aside from the multiplayer trailer for MGS3 S) and his games are usually nice looking technical showcases. Anything else is a damn lie. Period.

How many games even had a trailers were you could say, "look someone actually gave a shit to show this off in a presentable way, and made it look not completely boring". I don't think the MGS trailers are the some supreme masterpieces of cinema art, but they are more often than not way above all the other drek out there.

Here at GAF, once in a while we get a "Best Videogame Trailer" Thread, and the MGS games get brought up more often then most, there is a pretty consistent consesus everytime.

There was something special about MGS3. With the jungle setting, I really felt like I could connect to Snake, because when I was young, I use to play hide go seek in woods like in MGS3. I could even feel the warmness of the sun hitting my face when I played the game. Also, with the setting of the cold war/60s, I thought Kojima did an excellent job grabbing gamer's attention about the history of that time, making you feel you were apart of that era.
