Why would you upgrade your phone?

i have the Iphone X. Was thinking about getting the 13 or wait for 14.

But actually, why?
I mean, i play zero games. Apps i use are line, safari , wassap, and youtube. (Calendar , calculator … )

So. The only reason would be the camera . But im kinda nerd and i do have in my bag a compact dlsr. (A7c)

Mostly of you, why would you upgrade? Just because phone is “old”?

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
If it has issues dialing out or receiving calls, trouble sending or receiving texts, issues charing, if part of it is physically broken.

I would still have the phone I bought in 2015 if it hadn't been Appled into not being usable as a phone.

I usually upgrade every 2-3 years, mainly because I like the new tech and my current handset is getting tatty and the battery is starting to fail.

I have a 12 mini at the moment, thinking I might well upgrade to the 14 Pro but we’ll see.

Never got the folk who need the yearly upgrade though.

Battery life. It's pretty expensive to get a battery replaced and non-OEM batteries and doing it yourself isn't ideal. I wish we had kept easily replaceable batteries, I don't buy the bullshit reasons for making it difficult.

I had a X, dropped it in a pool and got a 12. There was absolutely no perceivable difference between the two phones and I could have kept my X for years more had I not broken it.

Camera improvements and /or just broke the last one.

My current S10 is overkill in terms of processing power and capability.

I have a 2020 Motorola G Power and since both the 2021 and 2022 models are somehow worse than the 2020 one I have no idea when this thing will be replaced.

Not that I would replace it until it is basically dead anyway, but I just find it funny that two models later the phone is worse than the one I bought.

Wouldn't know, I never have. My first generation Moto G from around 2014 (I think) is trucking along just fine.

Better cameras, faster processors, longer battery life, accidentally walking into a river with it still in my pocket after cracking the camera enclosure…lots of reasons

My phone is from 2015. I don't game on it either, but I totally would if phone games didn't completely fucking suck. I tried for years to find fun games without mobile timers, ads, manipulative advancement mechanics, and other crappy limitations; years to find anything on par with portable Nintendo or other console/pc games, and the best I could find were shitty ports of games I already own on better platforms.

So to answer your question, since I don't game there's no reason to upgrade my seven-year-old phone. But I totally would if phone gaming didn't suck. Diablo Immortal would convince me upgrade if it was a good game, but I'm pretty sure the monetization is just going to murder it in my eyes. I plan to read reviews and watch gameplay footage for a few months before possibly upgrading, just in case they don't fuck this one up.

Pixel 5 is the pinnacle of phone design IMHO; its the perfect size/shape/weight/everything

Went back to it after trying the Pixel 6 and iPhone 13

I'm becoming less eager to upgrade as of late, my last two phones I didn't need to upgrade.
But I did to have the latest
Biggest difference was screen size and it was supposedly faster, which sure it is.
But they've gotten to the point of diminished returns.
Things have improved like everything else but it's all built on the same foundation from 10 years ago.
And it's crazy to think my phone from 10 years ago face ID'd and organized all my photos to the respective person in my contracts.
My new phone don't do that.

I always upgrade because I pay off the phone after two years. Might as well get a new one. They're all fairly throwaway items at the end of the day.

I have a Blackberry Keyone. It’s android compatible, can make phone calls, texts and browse the web and YouTube. Not to mention the sweet ass physical keyboard. My old ass will replace it when it stops working.

I usually upgrade because the battery capacity goes to shit or, over time, things slow down even with stuff like Google Maps and various web browsers because shit keeps changing and shit keeps getting added.
Never did the yearly shit.

Thats the reason you buy high end phones to keep them for years, will never understand those who upgrades every year.

Never felt the itch upgrade my phone for any other reason then it starting to get slow or being broken someway. But I dont have any problem with people upgrading in rapid phase as it keeps the tech moving forward. You do you.

Well, I personally went from 3G to SE to SE2 - and there were always a couple of years between that. I have no intention to switch to SE3 at this point.

When it runs out of space due to photos and videos. Never again I will get something less than 256GB, cloud storage or not.

I still rocking my iPhone SE 1st gen. It still works, does not look slow to me and I took good care of the battery. Only downside is the size but it fits well in my pockets. Phones are more expensive than ever, I would be paranoid having a 1000 euros phone in my hand thinking I can drop it.

I went from a iPhone 6s Plus to a 10r after they had been out a year. The main reason I would upgrade is camera quality and versatility of having multiple lenses. When on vacation and wanting to take a lot of low light photos recently, the performance was not great. My travel buddy with his iPhone 12 had amazing quality and light performance in low light compared to mine.

I probably won't upgrade for a couple more years still.

I don't, that's why I still have my 6s. The annoyance is changing the battery every once in a while.

Upgraded last year to iPhone 13 mini because I got tired from carrying big-ass Android in my pocket. Very happy with it.

The whole mobile phone industry has stagnated and lacks innovation in a meaningful, way. The only way I'm "upgrading" from my current phone is if/when it breaks.

Not all android phones are big. Android isn't a brand, it's an operating system.

If banking apps no longer is supported, battery is EOL in terms of charging or its actually broken somehow.

Battery life, sadly that's the only thing, why I switch to new device every 2 years or so.

Battery is the only good reason. My 3.5 year old Pixel 3 is slowly dying, battery doesn't last 24 hours anymore and it's a bit annoying.

When I would buy Android phones, I would upgrade every 2-3 years, as the devices became way too slow & app crashes all the time. I switched over to iPhones and have a 12 now. Only reason I want to upgrade is because of a chip on my screen. I think I'll spring for the Pro or Pro Max for the better camera when I do but haven't thought much about it.

Similar situation here. I used to get mid-range Android phones, but since I got my XR I feel no need to upgrade. I know it’s largely because I got a high end phone, but it definitely took me out of the upgrade cycle.

To answer the OP, camera quality is the only thing I “miss” from newer phones.

I've had the same thoughts about upgrading my phone this time around. I was thinking ," hey you are just going to do the exact same things with your phone that you did with your last phone and the phone before that. So why make this massive upgrade." Now in defense of upgrading my phone. My phone is like totally cracked all over , so I got tape on it, so I don't continue giving my fingers micro cuts when I use my phone. 4 months later I'm still debating if I'll go the massive upgrade or just get a cheap midrange version.

My Oppo F11 Pro is starting to feel a bit sluggish running certain apps. Not sure if the recent changes to ColorOS are responsible, but it's not as snappy as the first day. And not because I have too many apps either. So, I think I'll upgrade this Fall, or early next year. That should be the last upgrade for some time though. There's just no need if you don't play games. I only seek responsiveness, not out and out performance.

One of my pet peeves is people needing to upgrade their phone every year. I say "pet peeve", because I know there is actually nothing wrong with it, just a personal hang-up. I guess it hinges on the idea that a lot of people do it just because they follow the trend. Nothing wrong with appreciating new tech or spending your money in ways that please you.

I only update when my old phone breaks.

I had an LG G4 for the past six years, and after dropping it (it fell down precisely flat on the screen, entire thing was covered in cracks) I updated to a Samsung S20+.

Same OP. Think of getting a new iPhone but can't think of a reason why. Battery life degradation is what would make me upgrade from the X and it's still trucking along fine. Other than that it would be if OS upgrades start making the phone chug. All the new iOS updates since the X came out have been fine on the X, however the last iOS update is the first one where I felt a noticeable decline in performance of the X. This doesn't bode well for the future...but we'll see.
