Finally got chance to try out some of the mulitplayer only games this week. Of the three, I thought Mario Chase was unquestionably the worst. Probably because I was terrible at it, but it seems largely tactless and exceptionally bland. It's chasey virtualised, and that's literally it.
Animal Crossing and Luigi's Mansion, on the other hand, were excellent. Both make far, far better use of the dual screen play style, and require a little more tact and involvement from all players to win beyond "chase the guy running away". Hell, Animal Crossing might as well be Mario Chase, only with extra shit to do to win.
Hmm, it's hard for me to accept that we could have had such enormously different experiences with Mario Chase.
It is certainly the simplest and least interesting of the three games, but just in terms of pure, riotous enthrallment, it surely took top honours among my three friends and I. Not to mention the hilarity of the replays!
I expect if the following three guidelines are followed, one would likely get the most out of it:
- The Mario should be looking at the GamePad screen the entire time (it is an extremely powerful tool!)
- at least three Toads playing, to properly enable cooperativity and cornering
- use the colours to communicate where Mario is headed, when one of the Toads eyeballs him. Eg: "YELLOW TO GREEN", "RED TO YELLOW", "BLUE TO CENTRE", etc.
Maybe you were doing all of this and still felt it uncompelling, in which case I'm at a loss!
