I'm sorry, but i find it extremely hard not to counter this bullshit (hey, just an opinion) with a snide remark or sarcastic oneliner... and i guess with that, i just failed.

So, the guy has no hands on with the console, has not worked for it (basically his opinion on the matter is no more backed up than any one's on this forum), yet he knows for a fact that it is crap. Well, he must have read some different hands-on previews than i, because most i've read, aren't negative at all.

He is also flat out wrong concerning the UI. Why should it be innovative? Why can't it just deliver added value in gameplay or controls? Why does it have to be something no other game has done? Oooh, a second analog stick, we can make FPS games now! - Nope, aaah shucks, somebody else already used that stick to control a character in a FPS. What is this bullshit? This guy is trolling plain and simple. But this is nothing new. Devs have trolled hardware before. The real disturbing part, is the fact that you are defending him from the perspective that the guy is entited to his opinion. Well sure, and so am i. He's an idiot and a troll.

There comes a point where when somebody has a opinion, even if it makes no sense or is unfounded, you just nod your head and keep on paddling. He wasn't engaged in a debate as far as I know, just sharing his perspective, so whatever right.

As you know it's kind of a ongoing theme in life where we don't grant knuckleheads who spout stuff with zero basis the appearance of a rational conversation. We just walk away.

Sadly yes, if there was going to be a internal HDD option we'd have heard by now, same true for USB 3.0 and eSATA. Pretty big mistake in my opinion.

Do people still think the game looks graphically worse than the Xbox 360 games?, the games looks great.

An experienced eye can tell that there's stuff going on in the game beyond what you see on a 360 right now. The big problem though is that most people confuse art and presentation (production values) with tech. A fancy scripted sequence with expensive mo-cap and art direction is taken to indicate superior hardware power.

I'm very excited for Zombi U, but its weakest point is the art direction and design don't bring anything new to the zombie table. Design wise it looks like a generic Left 4 Dead clone. Until a lot of people play it, it'll probably get trashed as being crap.

Game started preorder a few weeks ago (I have preordered a white one and a black one). HMV do not yet do preorders. They will e-mail you when they become available to preorder, but that is not the same thing.

Definetly not worse than X360. But I don't think it look that great. I mean, it's looking Ok, nothing that I would say WOW!

I agree, to me personally (please nobody flame for this comment) I think it looks graphically on par with The Last of Us or maybe even better, in my opinion though I could be wrong.

Hello all, I'm new... wanted to post my Gamescom impressions.

Wii U gamepad: It seems to be a great controller, really good feel in hands, pretty light, screen quality is very good, touch seems to be very responsive. All in all I can't wait to take it home :)

Pro controller: Only tried it at the Rayman demo... It didn't quite work, at several stations. Jump and kick input lagged often, but not always, it was nearly unplayable. I'm pretty sure it's not a general problem, only with the stations set up there. The game presenter there told me they were going to have it fixed till tomorrow. Other than those problems its a very nice controller, obviously pretty similar to the 360, except it lacked the battery clump on the backside, which I liked - don't know where the batteries will go in the wireless version (demo stations where wired)

ZombiU: It was the first game I tried this morning (before lots of people queued there). It looks nice to me, gamepad integration feels good.. though it requires a little getting used to, looking at the controller when you loot. Even with music volume like an airplane around you it gets pretty intense to rummage through your back pack without defense. I failed pretty hard on the game though, but I'm not used to ego perspective games, as an excuse.

Rayman Legends: Really fun game, playing as Rayman is nothing new if you know Origins, but I liked playing Murphy quite a bit. They did a lot to not let the supporting player feel like he's left out of the action. The rhythm level was great - except that with the input lag problems of the pro controller you hardly could complete that level. A friend of mine played at an ubisoft show with Wiimote, which worked flawless.

Batman Arkham City Armored Edition: Gamepad integration is kinda nice, minimap ontablet is great, launching a batarang with motion controls, too. Didn't like the remote motion controlled batarang. I don't know the 360/PS3 version as comparision, but I think it looked very much like those versions.

Rabbids land: 3 mini games where playable, the Rocket fire/ironing board surfing game, which is fun. Gamepad motion controls of the surf board work really well, it's nearly too easy dodging nearly all fireballs. The ball chase maze game: Gamepad player controls the big ball chasing the rabbids on the small green balls, I think - don't quite remember :) I liked this one the most, though the game presenter was really crap at this - at all of them, in fact. He was forgiven, cause he was hot. Didn't like tunnel of love much, kinda boring. In the end, it's just another mini game collection, Gamepad didn't bring that much new to it that it feels fresh enough to warrant a (full price) purchase for me.

Assassins creed 3: I didn't play the first two titles, so it was all new to me... Was going into the demo with uncertainty if I'd going to like this game much. They showed a 10min trailer with detailed explanations about design decisions concerning Connors movements, which was semi interesting to me, before we could try the game out, on a console of choice, so I chose WiiU gamepad. The demo was all naval combat. Works great on the gamepad, not a lot going on there, but I think it's better than cramming stuff there for the sake of it. Interest in this game is rising, I think I'm going to buy it.

What was sorely missing was Darksiders, I don't think it was playable there.

I've already reserved the WiiU along with 8(?) titles, really looking forward to it, even more now. Can't wait to play the Big N titles.

That Rayman box art is incredible. I think I might even pick it up since I have yet to play a Rayman game. It's weird that I'm actually excited about launch Ubisoft software.

Lego games always come out on every possible console correct? Kinda looking forward to Lego Lord of the Rings but it hasn't been officially announced yet for the Wii-U has it? But it's pretty much assumed it'll be there on the Wii-U?

He had completely legit gripes about management. DarkSiders2 sounds like a damn clusterfuck. And since they pretty much used his work he should have been at the very least credited. I can understand where he was coming from "Well it was my work, no way would they use it without crediting me." Yeah sorry dude. You walk in those doors and all of your ideas belong to your overlords.

edit: This has never been a good thing. It doesn't excuse Vigil and THQ's abuse of workers. It's just the damn truth in a more or less completely non-unionized field. If you don't have a mass of other workers watching your back you will be used, abused, and thrown away. Especially when talking about American business.

Wired controllers had input lag? Oh dear, what's going on?

Even if that's not going to be an issue, I really don't like the sound of these pro controllers. Everything I hear about them seems awful. They're really light, the way the triggers feel. Ugh.

What happened to the heady days of the wavebird? Why can't they make a gamecube quality controller again?
 
My impressions of the WiiU, based on these Games I played:
AC3, Your Shape Fitness 2013, Ravin Rabbids, Rayman Legends, ZombiU.

First of the controller:

Smaller than I had imagined. Gaming seems comfortable with the button-layout. Games play well with it and just based on my feelings it weighs way less than my wired 360-Controller.
Display responds well to touch. Also really sharp, but, also based on my feelings, the PS Vita Screen is still "sharper".

My impressions of the tablet-implementation:

To me, just based on the Games I played today, it totally feels like a gimmick. Everyone said "You could use it as a menu, maybe have the second player play something on it or use it as an inventory." And in the Games I played, yeah... it was like that. Compared to the innovation that the WiiMote or to some extent even Kinect brought us, it just doesnt feel like the tablet is catering to me, as a Gamer. It may be nice to have some map down there or change the inventory on the fly, but to me it also felt strange.
When I play PC or use a pad, I know all these buttons and keys and I dont need to look at them.
When I used the tablet to see something on the map in ZombiU, like the location of Zombies, I first had to look down, see "Ah, there is a zombie 10m to my left", then look up again and see it is already biting me. It doesnt seem like a long time has passed from looking down, then looking back up but... maybe I am not used to it right now. It still feels strange to do that. I would rather have the map in the upper right corner right now, than looking at the tablet.

It was just my impression. Hope others have some different experiences.

Graphical capabilities:

Sorry to say that, but I was really looking forward to ZombiU and at least the Demo at the GC really looked BAD. Not from the textures and the effects, they were alright, but the aliasing was like hell. It really looked like an upscaled Wii-Game and I still dont know why. I wish i had taken a photo of it. ZombiU at least to me, didnt look "Next-Gen" just because the aliasing ruined everything...
Really sad after I played it, since I was really looking forward to it (and the gameplay was really fun too!!!!!)

The other Games also... look like 360/Ps3-Games, but not better. I am 100% sure you can easily port them 1to1 to a 360/Ps3. And even then they wouldnt be considered "graphically impressive".

Final impressions and my take on the view, just after coming back:

As I stated before. The Tablet isnt something "innovative". It just feels to gimmicky for me as a Gamer and even though I really dont like to classify groups of people I think Nintendo didnt think of the Gamers, when they made the pad, but on the "casuals". People like my little sister or my gf.

And because of that I am really sad to see that I guess this was really expensive for the development department and makes the WiiU expensive. Graphically the Games I played are just Ps3/360 Games and I can buy them at 150-250€ here in Germany. I wouldnt "need" a WiiU.
And that makes me kinda sad. When Sony and MS will announce their consoles maybe next year, for next christmas and offer better graphical capabilities, then what will the 3rd-Parties develop for the WiiU? They wanna do some downgraded ports?
I am kinda scared, that the WiiU then will face the same 3rd-party situation like the Wii. "Casual" Games for the WiiU, the "big blockbuster" games for MS and Sony.

WE will have our great Nintendo-Games, but what I am scared of is, that the WiiU will be a Nintendo-console without that many great third party titles....

Ok, I have a few questions. Well, I have a lot, but I'll start with these.

1- Why exactly do you think the tablet is not catering to the gamer? What about the tablet specifically is casual or anti-gamer? I'm honestly a but flummoxed that you would say that Kinect is more innovative and brings more to you, the gamer, than the Gamepad.

2- Your ZombiU experience is by all accounts exactly what the developers were going for- why does this experience feel gimmicky as opposed to adding to the tension, etc.

I dont think it will be worse than Wii, but I also think it could be worse than the next MS and Sony consoles.

My predictions are: "Good 3rd Party Support the first year. - Mediocre support when the next MS and sony consoles are announced.

Just based on my intuition. And I really think, after playing the Ubisoftgames today, that the tablet isnt catered to "us" Gamers. It doesnt really bring us any big benefit.


But boy, I hope I am wrong about my predictions. I really want the WiiU to be a console, that really caters to everyone the same amount.

Going by past Gamescom experiences, the TVs they're using seem to always be set up in the worst possible way (or not at all).

EVERY game looks bad on them. I've played 360, PS3 and Wii games at gamescom and all of them looked crappy compared to their final versions when played on my own TV (which is not a super awesome one).

They never seem to have anti aliasing enabled in pre-release demos 'cause it almost always looked like poo poo. (even Nintendo managed to make Wii games look worse than they do ...)

I am just basing this on my experiences today. Maybe the Ubi-Games arent the best games to base it on though.

Honestly, to me it was more a hassle looking down at the tablet to see some information, than directly see it on some HUD. Maybe you need to "learn" it though to get used to it. Im not sure if its a good comparison, maybe doesnt even fit at all, but when you read a book and someone talks to you, normally you either fully concentrate on the book, listen to the speaker or cant really follow both of it (at least for me).

It was just hard adepting to it. Looking down, processing information and then looking up again.


For the Kinect-thing. I think, if used correctly, Kinect could have offered a lot of more gameplay-experiences than the WiiU-Gamepad. At least besides the things we saw up to this point I also wouldnt have a clue what to use the tablet for in Games like Tomb Raider or Mass Effect besides inventory or scanning planets.

2- Your ZombiU experience is by all accounts exactly what the developers were going for- why does this experience feel gimmicky as opposed to adding to the tension, etc.

I just played for like 10 minutes, so maybe I couldnt feel the tension, especially in a loud big room with lights on and such. I know the ZombiU developers were going for it. And I really really loved when I checked my inventory or looted some things, that I need to be on guard. I really liked that.

It wasnt the inventory that felt gimmicky then, when doing that. It was the map. You could easily put the map in the upper right corner and I think "Gamers" would feel more comfortable. This is just nitpicking though, since I thought especially ZombiU did the best implementation of the tablet.

What I criticize more is the fact that some games just used the "inventory" like AC3 did. I mean, I could easily change weapons in seconds with a Gamepad, so why should I look down, select one thing with my finger and then look back up.
Also Batman, which I didnt play but saw, used it similar. It seems more like a hassle to do such things with the tablet, than just doing it on the actual screen.

I found myself just looking at the screen, like immersed in a book, than even paying any attention to the Tablet at all.

Yeah. I noticed that too, but seriously. ZombiU was in a totally different league I think. The aliasing really ruined the experience for me.

Though I have to say the TVs at the Sony-Booth almost always have a crisp and clear image.

If the sales are good third party's won't abandon the Wii U for the PS4 and 720 even since we know they will be more powerful, the difference was the Wii was too weak, if Nintendo made the Wii an HD console and sold just as well the Wii would of gotten great third party support, their is no difference like that with the Wii U towards the PS4 and Xbox 720 so devs can't make up an excuse like with the Wii, as well we know Nintendo didn't take third party support 100% serious with the Wii but with the Wii U they said their main goal is to get the third party support.

We already hear indie devs praising the Wii U so that's a start, Nintendo just has to be 100% serious with the Wii U's third party support and make sure they get the games the PS4 and Xbox 720 will get.

We actually don't know about that, it's been heavily hinted that they are coming to Wii U, as for Tomb Raider I do find it stupid that they aren't bringing it because they can't think of anything to do with the Gamepad but that statement was months ago so it could be possible Nintendo convinced them to bring it, it's also possible they might not of known about the Pro Controller so now they can just do a direct port.

We know their is still an NDA because Vigil confirmed it and other devs, we heard they are going to announce 2013 games at the Fall Conference so that can still help, their could be tons of third party games we know of right now that could be coming to Wii U we just don't know yet.
 
I think Nintendo's head start will help with third party support. They really just have to establish a large fan base that developers won't want to ignore. It also helps that Wii U will be able to keep up with the other two next generation consoles in technical terms. Ultimately, if you want such games on Wii U, you'll have to vote for your wallet and buy those games if they do come. I certainly hope that a few lackluster titles won't deter developers, though. If developers can't come up with a truly creative use for the GamePad, just offering Off-TV Play will satisfy many gamers.

On an unrelated note, I really, really, really hope that we'll be able to take screenshots with Wii U.

I am just basing this on my experiences today.

Hmm, I seriously wonder if perhaps standing up and playing instead of sitting on a normal couch or chair like you would at your home would have much of an impact? I know it's a funny thing to think about, but playing a game standing up has a totally different feel to it than sitting down does for some reason. Everyone should try it the next time they boot up a game on a console at their house.

Controllers always feel different for some reason. The placement of your arms is different. The angle you are viewing the screen is different (and in this case the angle you would be viewing the Wii-u Gamepad would be different as well).

It's like playing a 3DS at a demo station at a store. I own a 3DS and love it, but I still try out the demo stations whenever I go to a Target or Best Buy just for the hell of it and every time it's a crappy experience.

I swear, there is just something different about playing a game standing up vs sitting down. Someone in college should write a thesis on this phenomenon. :p
