Wii U Firmware Update is live everywhere. Everyone calm down.

Do you have some Wii version of Wind Waker I'm unaware of?

It still doesn't support GameCube games.

Uh... champ, you might wanna sit down a sec.

Also, we can map waggle? WUT?

And then you realize that WW isn't a Wii game and you have to get the Wii U version for off tv play.
Shut up you guys!

Anyway, this would be shockingly better if it supported GC games, because for a lot of Wii games, Gamepad controls are useless and there's no point in using it as a 6.2" TV :|||

Wow!!! now this is an amazing update!

I'll have to go through my games and work out what out of my backlog can be played on the gamepad...

I'm guessing Xenoblade, Last Story and Pandora's tower will be first on the list...

Lower your expectations guys. There is absolutely no way that we're going to be playing Wii games on our gamepads only without a Wiimote of some kind... At least not right now.

Which is why this isn't too significant for me at the moment. It's very cool but I don't see myself doing it.

Definitely great, although they'll probably still be stuck at the crappy gamepad resolution, making it slightly less awesome.
It's not like Wii games output anymore than 480 anyway. I think the screen is 854x480? That's perfectly fine for Wii games.

Would you also need a sensor bar to play Wii games without a TV or is that built into the little black strip on the top of the pad?
Yes, the gamepad has a sensor bar.

I can already imagine the meme of people posting pictures of themselves playing Wii games on the gamepad using the remote and nunchuck controllers. That will look hilariously stupid and I can't wait to see it.

Wii games have to look pretty good on the gamepad I'd imagine even if the screen isn't of the highest quality it matches the resolution of the games quite well.

Repeating (I just assumed this was obvious) - Wii games still require a Wii controller (Wii Mote etc) to function. Only the image is played on the game pad - you can't use it to control the games directly.

-USB Keyboard
-Wii Off TV Play (still requires Wii Motes!)
-Surround Sound support for Wii games (Dolby Pro Logic II)
-Access Friend's List from Wii U menu directly
-Upload screens taken when pausing the game directly to blogs and forums using the browser.
-Option to receive automatically downloaded software from Nintendo.
-Wii U Chat via headset connected to the Game Pad
-View PDFs on the Browser.

How did you guys think you could play full on motion controlled games on the pad? Thats just not possible.

Classic controller using games though, that would be the business.

now all they need to do is have the gamepad "pretend" its a classic controller in Wii mode. Can't be that difficult right? right?

so wii off tv play is cool, but how does it work? can you just use the gamepad? or do you need to have other input devices? kind of defeats the purpose if you do.

I honestly don't see how they couldn't have got the Gamepad to emulate the Classic Controller Pro or Wiimote non-pointer stuff. THAT would have been a full megaton. As it is, it's a smallton, but still nice.

And I ask again, what about games that have CC and gamecube controller support already?

Let's not get too excited, that wording seems to imply that the off-screen play will be similar to playing Pikmin 3 on the Gamepad with the remote/nunchuk. Still awesome, and I'd like to be proven wrong.

Imply nothing. That's exactly what it says. You need to use a Wii remote to play Wii games; the gamepad only displays the game. I assume they'd have to go in and patch every Wii game individually to get them working with just the gamepad, but maybe they could trick the Wii mode into thinking that the gamepad is a classic controller so it works with some games at least. Encouraging first step at least. I never thought they would do this.
